HAZMAT CALLED TO RAIL YARD FOR PROPANE LEAK

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WKBW) - A hazardous materials team from the Buffalo Fire Department worked to contain a propane leak inside the Frontier Rail Yard Wednesday night.
Firefighters were dispatched to 1836 Broadway around 10:15 p.m. Crews worked for over an hour to stop the propane leak near the tanker car's valves. Nobody was hurt.
Representatives from CSX and Rural Metro Medial Services assisted Buffalo Fire at the scene.
CSX said only a small amount of propane vapor was released from an unsealed connection valve.

PUPILS EVACUATED AT GROVE

Grove Academy was closed this morning (Thursday) following a fire in a science lab.
Scottish Fire and Rescue received a call at 10.53am to say that electrical wiring above the second floor laboratory had caught fire.
Pupils were immediately evacuated and at the time of writing the school was closed, but Dundee City Council officials expected it to reopen as usual tomorrow (Friday).
Staff managed to partially extinguish the conflagration and it was fully extinguished on arrival by firefighters using a CO2 extinguishers.
One appliance each from Balmossie and Kingsway East stations attended the incident and crews ventilated the affected classrooms and corridors.

SANTA BARBARA MAN ARRESTED FOR ALLEGEDLY OPERATING DRUG LAB

A Santa Barbara man was arrested for allegedly operating a drug lab after being injured Wednesday in an explosion involving chemicals used in drug extraction, police said.
Justin Smith, 25, was arrested Wednesday night after authorities discovered chemicals used for mescaline extraction at his residence on the 1900 block of San Andres Street, Santa Barbara police Sgt. Todd Johnson said.

The response was initiated when Smith called 9-1-1 to report hand injuries, which included chemical burns and a laceration, police said.

ANTIOCH HAS HANDED OUT $16,700 TO CHILDREN INJURED IN WATER PARK CHEMICAL LEAK LAST SUMMER

ANTIOCH -- The city has so far handed out more than $16,700 to settle claims filed by four families that had children injured by a chemical leak at Prewett Family Water Park last summer.
Seven families have filed legal claims against the city related to the June 18 chemical leak. The four were settled for $3,500; $7,161.50; $5,432.54 and $659.44, city records show. Three are still being processed.
The city has also responded to the incident by implementing new safety improvements that must be in place by the time the park opens in 2016.
The chemical spill was reportedly caused by a malfunctioning chlorine pump that caused a highly-concentrated cocktail of cleaning chemicals to flow into the park's sport pool. Thirty-four children were injured, all reporting similar symptoms of skin rashes, sore throats, difficulty breathing and vomiting.

MADISONVILLE FOOD PLANT EXPERIENCES SECOND CHEMICAL LEAK

MADISONVILLE, LA (WVUE) -
For the second time in the last two months, there has been a chemical leak at Diversified Foods in Madisonville.
This leak, like the leak that occurred in October, involved ammonia.
No evacuations have been ordered. During the last leak, the plant was evacuated and a stretch of I-12 was closed.

Hazmat crews were called out to Aus-Mex on Highway 80, after someone noticed the leak of Hydrochloric acid.
Aus-Mex makes tortillas and we're told the acid leaked out in front of the business. The Hazmat crew put out a mixture on the ground to absorb it. They say it's similar to dirt and kitty litter mixture. We're told hundred of gallons spilled out. Businesses around Aus-Mex were evacuated and we're told no one was hurt.
District Fire Chief, Patrick Repman tells NewsWest 9, "We've heard that it could be anywhere from two hundred to three hundred gallons [leaked].
The main thing is that it's on the pavement and it's in the soil, and you can basically see the bubbling and what it is that it's going to remain there and if you were to touch it or get exposed to it on your skin of course you're going to feel the burn from the acid."

MARYLAND FOOTBALL PLAYERS SUE SCHOOL OVER CHEMICAL BURNS FROM JERSEYS

Five injured football players in Maryland are suing the Montgomery County Public Schools because of serious burns they suffered when a custodian mistakenly washed football uniforms in a chemical in September 2014, according to WJLA-TV.
The two lawsuits filed by the former players at Springbrook High in Silver Spring are seeking $75,000 each, more than the school initially offered for pain and suffering. Roughly 40 players suffered burns.
‰??It felt like there were 100,000 hot needles in my skin,‰?? defensive tackle Matthew Robinson told WJLA.
Robinson said he recalled a ‰??wet substance‰?? on his pads but didn‰??t think anything was wrong as he hurried to the practice field after school. During practice, the players felt a burning sensation.
The chemical ‰?? a solution called Virex 256 ‰?? is used to prevent the spread of MRSA and HIV.
‰??This seems like a case of colossal stupidity,‰?? attorney Bruce Plaxen, who represents four players, told WJLA-TV. ‰??These are kids that went to school to study and practice football and came home permanently scarred. I think it was Matthew [Robinson] who said, ‰??It‰??s disrespectful to expect all of us to split $100,000 for what we went through,‰?? and I would agree with him.‰??

RICHMOND: FIRE REPORTED AT CHEVRON REFINERY

RICHMOND -- A small fire in a non-operating unit of the Chevron Richmond refinery that broke out Wednesday around 10:45 a.m., according to a company spokeswoman.
The fire, caused by construction on a non-operating unit at the refinery, was extinguished about 15 minutes later. The fire was non-chemical but the spokeswoman had no further details about the cause.
The incident occurred just minutes before the county's monthly emergency siren test, operated by the Contra Costa Emergency Warning System.
The Chevron spokeswoman said there was no impact from the incident on employees or the community and that the refinery is continuing to operate at normal capacity and production

LANDFILL FIRE BRINGS NEW CUSTOMERS TO CLAY PEAK

Clay Peak Landfill is getting some new customers after a fire temporarily closed a Mountain Home landfill.
A fire broke out at the Simco Road Regional Landfill on Nov. 17 and it has been closed ever since.
Payette County Commissioner Larry Church said he heard the fire spread due to petroleum waste. According to its website, the Simco landfill accepts petroleum and other chemical and industrial wastes. The company did not return the Independent-Enterprise‰??s request for comment.
The fire left its customers scrambling for waste management services, including Valley and Boise counties. Both have reached out to the Clay Peak Landfill, Landfill Supervisor Alan Scharbrough told commissioners at their Monday meeting.
