MUSCLE CAR EXPLOSION SETS OFF NOVATO HOUSE FIRE

A Novato man, who was working on his muscle car, accidentally set part of his home and a nearby hillside on fire over the weekend when the vehicle‰??s engine exploded, igniting the intense, two-alarm blaze.
The homeowner was working on his 1972 Chevrolet Nova in a detached garage of his house on the 700 block of Cherry Street when around 4:45 p.m. Saturday he got behind the wheel and tried to start the car, firefighters said.
The man, who was not named, smelled ‰??a chemical odor‰?? and turned the car off, but when he tried to start it again, the engine compartment exploded and burst into flames, officials with the Novato Fire District said.
The blast was so great that neighbors reported feeling their homes shake.
One of those neighbors was Novato firefighter Tommy Gaulke, who ran outside to see what happened right around the time the hapless homeowner came sprinting down his steep driveway.

HOLIDAY TRAFFIC IMPEDED BY BANNING FUEL SPILL

A fuel spill on I-10 Saturday morning caused a large traffic jam to form between Banning and the Coachella Valley as many of the thousands of people who traveled into or out of the area for Thanksgiving hit the road to return home Saturday.
Just before 10:45 a.m., the California Highway Patrol said a tractor trailer began to leak fuel, spilling between 50 and 80 gallons of the liquid along a quarter mile of interstate roadway west of Sunset Avenue in Banning.
A hazmat crew was called in, according to the Riverside County Fire Department, and at least one lane was closed as crews worked to clean up the fuel safely. The road was completely reopened around 5 p.m.
Westbound traffic on I-10 slowed considerably during the closure, and was likely exacerbated by the extra number of holiday travelers on the road.

HFD: CARBON MONOXIDE LEAK AT SW HOUSTON APARTMENT COMPLEX SENDS 12 TO HOSPITAL

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A carbon monoxide leak at a southwest Houston apartment building sent a dozen people to hospitals Saturday.
It happened before 6pm at a complex in the 6400 block of South Gessner.
The Houston Fire Department responded to a report of an unconscious person in the building. When firefighters arrived, they saw it would be more than one person affected.
A 12-year-old boy in the next building said he saw people being carried out.
"I thought one person was dead," he said.
There were no fatalities, but a lot of concern.

CREWS CLEAN UP LARGE FUEL SPILL AT PIEDMONT GAS STATION

Dispatch said hazmat was responding to a large fuel spill at an Anderson County gas station on Saturday afternoon.
The fuel spill happened at the Pilot Travel Center at 110 Frontage Road in Piedmont.
Chief Kevin Chastain with the Wren Fire Department said the driver of a truck thought he set his parking brake but didn't. The truck rolled back and struck a barrier, causing fuel to leak.
Chastain said between 100 and 150 gallons of fuel leaked at the Pilot Travel Center.

CHEMICAL MIX CAUSES FIRE AT KANNAPOLIS HOME

KANNAPOLIS ‰?? An accidental mixture of solvents caused a minor fire at a Kannapolis home Friday night.
The Kannapolis Fire Department was called to a North Cannon Boulevard home shortly before 9 p.m. Friday, according to a press release. Rowan County EMS also responded.
On arrival, they found family members ‰??complaining of a strange odor and irritation to their eyes,‰?? according to a press release.
Monitoring by fire crews found elevated and potentially harmful chemical readings which began to worsen during the next hour.
A small fire broke out, which was immediately extinguished through an exterior window.
Haz-mat crews found several rags with various solvents, which were believed to have been the source of the problem.
‰??This was a unique call in the fact that there were initially no outward reasons or cause for the odor and subsequent fire,‰?? Battalion Chief David Winecoff said.

Environmental officials say that a mechanical failure in a pump led to the release of more than 200 pounds of anhydrous ammonia from a Perdue Farms facility in Milford.
Company spokeswoman Julie DeYoung says that the anhydrous ammonia was being used as a refrigerant and that the incident was reported to the appropriate authorities.
Perdue spokesman Joe Forsthoffer says a part of the plant was evacuated as a precaution for about 20 minutes because people working there smelled ammonia but no one was injured. Forsthoffer says the area around the plant wasn‰??t affected.

FIRE MARSHAL: SEEPING WATER CAUSED RADIOACTIVE DUMP BLAST

LAS VEGAS (AP/KEN RITTER) - Rainwater seeping into corroded 1970s-era barrels buried at a radioactive waste dump caused an explosion last month at the long-closed facility about 110 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada's top fire investigator said.
Radioactivity wasn't detected after the Oct. 18 blast and fire, and no injuries were reported, Nevada Fire Marshal Peter Mulvihill said this week.
Several 55-gallon drums blown beyond the facility fence were returned to the crater and reburied, and the damaged area was filled with dirt and covered with a waterproof chemical membrane almost 1 inch thick, topped with more dirt, he said.
A previous statement from the Nye County sheriff said the site near Beatty had been covered with a heavy waterproof tarp.
"They're going to look at a long-term solution and get advice how to proceed," Mulvihill said Tuesday as he outlined findings he submitted for review by state, local, county and federal agencies handling the incident.
Mulvihill said the federal Energy Department and Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Desert Research Institute of the University of Nevada, and the state Division of Environmental Protection are involved, along with the state Health Division. He said a final report could be made public in the coming days.

WESTERLY, R.I. ‰?? An early morning explosion and fire ripped through an apartment building in Westerly on Friday.
Neighbors narrowly escaped the flames.
The NBC 10 I-Team learned that a hash oil cook lab caused the incident. Hash oil is a potent marijuana resin that is extracted with chemical solvents, which often explode.
"It just looks like a bomb hit it," said Robert Fleming, a neighbor. "The whole thing is blown out in the front there, you know?"
Fleming said the people responsible put everyone in the apartment complex, which is located on Apache Drive, in danger.
The fire reportedly began on around 4:00 a.m. and grew to two alarms before the flames were put out.

PROBE OF DOVER CHEMICAL CORP. FIRE CONTINUES

DOVER
Investigation is still ongoing to determine the cause of a fire Wednesday at Dover Chemical Corp. that was quickly extinguished and did not involve any chemicals or a release of chemicals.
Dover Fire Captain Michael Mossor said firefighters were called to the chemical plant on Davis Road shortly before
5 p.m. Wednesday for a building fire, and when they arrived, the fire was nearly extinguished by Dover Chemical personnel. Firefighters assisted in dousing the remaining smoldering material.
The fire was said to have been started by a small leak of a heat transfer fluid that came in contact with a hot surface and ignited. The flames burned pipe insulation and insulation in an exterior wall.
There were no injuries reported.
