An alternative way to demonstrate flame colors of metals is to use fine powders of each desired compound in small containers with lids. Shake the container. Open the lid and hold the container opening near the air intake of a bunsen burner and the entire flame will have the color of the compound for 3 to 5 seconds. Close lid, shake, repeat. Not as long lasting as the methyl alcohol procedure, but much safer with no flammable liquids needed.
