Heather,
There are safety issues with transporting chemicals, especially in elevators. Will the basement stockroom have the proper ventilation and fire suppression systems required for storing flammables? If all they are doing is teaching, it seems that putting classrooms in the basement would be a more economical choice than putting a specially designed chemical storeroom. Ours has special venting for flammables and toxics and proper fire doors and walls and a sprinkler system, as per NFPA fire codes.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Chemical Stockroom Location
Greetings all,
Like most colleges and universities, my school needs more space - specifically offices and teaching classrooms. One suggestion was to move the chemical stockroom from the third floor (top floor) by all the chemistry labs to the sub-basement.
Can any of you help me keep the chemical stockroom on the third floor? Is there any building code or recommended teaching protocol or some other rule of thumb that would keep me near the labs that use the chemicals?
Heather
