Environmental Health and Safety Specialist I (UCP 5)
Chemical Health and Safety
The Department of Environmental Health and Safety at the University of Connecticut, Storrs is seeking a Chemical Health and Safety Specialist. This position reports to the Chemical Health and Safety Manager providing specialty technical services for the University in the area of chemical health and safety and is responsible for supporting, developing and implementing a major new initiative ‰?? a University laboratory chemical inventory program.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Monitoring University compliance with applicable regulations and University policies in the area of chemical health and safety through collection of appropriate data and records, and surveys of laboratories and their chemical stocks and other University facilities and operations, as needed.
• Reviewing and implementing procedures for the procurement, reception and distribution of chemicals arriving at and departing from the University by means of a computerized, bar code inventory system.
• Providing consultation and training to the University community regarding appropriate procedures, controls, regulations and policies regarding chemical health and safety and the acquisition of chemicals that might have an impact on environmental health and safety.
• Participating in the development of safety guidelines and related communications and educational information pertaining to chemical health and safety and the procurement of chemicals.
• Compiling data and developing reports on chemical inventories and other environmental health and safety information.
• Potentially supervising professional and student staff.
• Performing related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, or other closely related field incorporating knowledge of chemicals plus one years‰?? experience in the field of health and safety or working in a research, teaching, diagnostic/clinical or quality control laboratory,
OR
Associate‰??s degree in science, technology, or engineering, with courses in chemistry, plus three years‰?? experience as noted above;
• Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, nationally recognized standards and guidelines relating to the use and management of chemicals;
• Detail-oriented with a strong working ability with computer applications and database software; Knowledge of Microsoft Office products.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse community of University faculty, staff and students;
• Ability to respond promptly in-person to all campus locations requiring environmental health and safety services, including the regional campuses, which may be outside of normal business hours;
Preferred Qualifications: Professional certification in safety/health/environmental discipline (CIH, CSP, CHMM); or meets qualifications for certification; Experience in an academic research environment; Experience with chemical inventory management software applications; DOT, and IATA training; OSHA training (HAZWOPER); experience in presenting training before small and large groups.
Appointment Terms: This is a full-time, permanent position.
