Dear Irene, Ralph, and other DCHAS Listserv members:
Thanks for the recent comments about NLM's Enviro-Health Links --- Laboratory Safety page ( https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__sis.nlm.nih.gov_enviro_labsafety.html&d=BQIGaQ&c=lb62iw4YL4RFalcE2hQUQealT9-RXrryqt9KZX2qu2s&r=meWM1Buqv4IQ27AlK1OJRjcQl09S1Zta6YXKalY_Io0&m=Edhxhjzh8pL0gkS_ExVu9ogj1gggq7nNKp4VefT0I3Y&s=uY4KEC5C5O78eLppoNqyVT_NdqNye2hryZsXQQpikrE&e= ). I want to let you know that my colleague (Stephanie Publicker) and I are updating and enhancing what is in the MSDS links section. Suggestions about MSDS-related links to include are welcome if you want to send them to me at pertti.hakkinen**At_Symbol_Here**nih.gov . One site that we are considering noting and linking to is: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__www.ilpi.com_msds_-23Internet&d=BQIGaQ&c=lb62iw4YL4RFalcE2hQUQealT9-RXrryqt9KZX2qu2s&r=meWM1Buqv4IQ27AlK1OJRjcQl09S1Zta6YXKalY_Io0&m=Edhxhjzh8pL0gkS_ExVu9ogj1gggq7nNKp4VefT0I3Y&s=6WbK0VonKx4QSaIs32nDxIahGyKqFElW9Xp42mKdziA&e=

I can‰??t be much more precise that Peter‰??s estimate. I was involved in helping to develop and promote the SIRI site in the 1993-95 time frame until about 2002 and helped replicate it at a couple of other locations (those other sites are now off line). I don‰??t remember when the last update was made to the site (the original source of the data were CD-ROMs from the Dept of Defense, so updates had to be done manually and I don‰??t think that the CDs are still being issued).
Because MSDS‰??s and SDS‰??s are so available on supplier‰??s web sites these days, I have suggested that the site be decommissioned, but the traffic level suggests that the loss of the site would create a problem for a significant number of users, so the direct manager of the site is reluctant to do so. I know that we never intended for the site to address legal requirements of employers to meet regulatory requirements; they were intended to serve the general public who were unable to find chemical safety information elsewhere. At this point, the information is more of historical interest than direct use.
Thanks to Irene for pointing out the limitations of the site.

Great site, with lots of good reference information! It's nice to see the online resources collected in one spot, an obvious advantage over the organization (or lack thereof) of the Bookmarked sites on my browser...
One drawback, however, is that the main link in the Material (sic) Safety Data Sheet section points to the SIRI site, which does not appear to have been updated to GHS-SDS. [I did a VERY limited search - one chemical(!), sodium dichromate - and found only old MSDS.]
As always, thanks for sharing with CHAS!
Sincerely,
Irene Cesa

NLM Toxicology and Environmental Health Info Laboratories can be dangerous.
The US National Library of Medicine (NLM) offers a guide to web resources in laboratory safety with links to information for clinical, academic and school labs. It includes resources for handling chemical, biological, and nanotechnology safely.
The guide also links to repositories of health and safety videos and includes pre-formulated searches of NLM resources.
