We use aluminum shot, 1.2 mm teardrop. This works better than the sand we used to use.
We are a community college, and this is a low-cost choice. From Transmet, 50 lbs for $133.

Hi, Debbie,
I picked up a little packet of metal beads at the Denver ACS meeting in March that provide a good substitute for oil or water. They are called Lab Armor Beads ™, and produced by a company of the same name.
They provide either heat or cooling and eliminate the problems of bacteria, mold, algae, and flammability. Plus, they provide energy efficiency..
Their web site is
www.labarmor.com, and their phone number is 1-888-227-1410.
It sounded like a great idea to me.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Options to replace oil baths for heating
Good morning:
I need to offer some options to replace oil (silicone or mineral) with a different material for heating baths. I’m also looking at heating block options and have a number of suppliers to review – cost may be an issue here.
Ideas? The Google has failed me this morning.
