Full-time staff position opening at University of Pennsylvania in the Office of Environmental Health and Radiation Safety

Title:  Lab Safety Specialist

 

The job is in the area of research safety and compliance, but preference will be given to candidates with firsthand laboratory-research experience.  See below for duties and qualifications.

Duties

Under the direction of the Associate Director Industrial Hygiene Programs, provide support to the University’s environmental, health & safety programs to ensure compliance with existing governmental regulations and national guidelines. Inspect research and teaching facilities for compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Administration regulations and national consensus guidelines pertaining to the use, handling, and disposal of hazardous materials. Provide written recommendations to improve processes, experimental design, procedures and equipment to minimize the hazard potential. Conduct evaluations of fume hoods. Assist laboratories with setting up chemical inventories. Perform field surveys to document the equipment status and calibrations of a variety of safety related equipment. Develop and present various safety training programs for faculty, staff and students. Investigate injury reports to identify safety issues and develop corrective action plans. Provide support to EHRSemergency response team. Respond (on call) to hazardous materials incidents on a rotating basis.

Qualifications

The position requires a BS degree in science (Chemistry, Physics, Biology) or related field with 1-2 years of safety related experience or laboratory technician experience preferably in a research facility. The individual must have excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills. Must be familiar with Microsoft Office.

Must be able to move about freely and carry up to 50 pounds; must be able to wear respiratory protection, including SCBA’s. Valid driver’s license.
