Chapter V, The Use of Fused Silica by H.V. Neher in Procedures in Experimental Physics, John Strong et al., Prentice-Hall, New York (1938) is a good source for the techniques used in making quartz fibers and working with them. “Although an oxyhydrogen flame become useful when working large pieces of quartz, small pieces can be worked easily with an oxy-natural gas flame. An ordinary Bunsen burner flame using natural gas is hot enough to soften small pieces”, p 189. Neher also describes how to make large and small torches for working fused quartz.
