HAZMAT SCENE CLEARED IN NORTHBOROUGH AFTER AMMONIA GAS EMITTED
Tags: us_MA, industrial, release, response, ammonia

NORTHBOROUGH, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Emergency personnel responded to a Level 2 hazardous materials situation at an industrial complex in Northborough, Thursday morning after ammonia gas was emitted and vented in a room according to the city's fire department.

Firefighters responded to the scene at Goddard Road at around 9:20 a.m. after employees in the room noticed the gas coming through. The building, which is part of a five-building research complex, was shut down and evacuated.

Firefighters called in the hazardous materials team after learning ammonia was the chemical being emitted.

The gas was contained to one room because of the quick-acting employees, fire officials said. Once firefighters and the hazmat team could no longer detect a level of ammonia, at around 12:30 p.m. the building was reopened and employees allowed to return.

BREAKING: HOUSE EXPLOSION IN COLONIAL OAKS
Tags: us_FL, public, explosion, response, unknown_chemical

SARASOTA - An explosion that blew the roof off a home in Sarasota‰??s Colonial Oaks subdivision Tuesday night ignited a blaze that engulfed the home, threatened neighboring houses and knocked the garage door into a house across the street.

There were no reports of injuries, and firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze at 2102 Cork Oak Street.

Firefighters said that the source of the blast, which occurred around 9:30 p.m., appeared to be ‰??chemical in nature.‰?? No natural gas serves the neighborhood.

3 BURNED IN FIRE AT DYNO NOBEL CHEMICAL PLANT NEAR CHEYENNE, 2 TAKEN TO HOSPITAL
Tags: us_WY, industrial, fire, injury, unknown_chemical

CHEYENNE ‰?? A fire at a chemical plant near Cheyenne has burned three people.

Laramie County Fire District 1 Chief Darrick Mittlestadt says firefighters got the call about the fire at the Dyno Nobel plant around 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

He says the company fire brigade at the plant a couple miles west of Cheyenne had the fire under control by the time county firefighters arrived.

Mittlestadt says two people were taken by ambulance to a hospital. The identities and conditions of the victims weren't immediately available.

Messages left at Dyno Nobel weren't immediately returned.

Dyno Nobel Inc. is a supplier of industrial explosives for mining and other industries. A worker at the plant in November was hospitalized after he inhaled ammonia gas through a malfunctioning respirator.

SERIOUS FIRE IN BSU ART CLASS AVERTED BY SAFETY DEVICE
Tags: us_MA, laboratory, fire, response, unknown_chemical

BRIDGEWATER ‰?? A more serious fire in an art laboratory at Bridgewater State University‰??s Hunt Hall was averted Wednesday when a safety device used to contain sparks from a metalworking class did its job, authorities there said.
But while the safety fume hood acted as expected, the one-room lab sustained smoke damage and smoke was also escaping through the rooftop ventilation system of the two-story building, said Eva Gaffney, a university spokeswoman.
No structural damage was reported, nor any injuries, she said. Classes were relocated or cancelled.
The East Bridgewater Fire Department assisted in the response while West Bridgewater covered the main fire station, Bridgewater Fire Chief George Rogers said.
He said firefighters were on the scene for about an hour, but had knocked the fire back in about 15 minutes.
Rogers said the art laboratory is located on the ground floor in the rear of Hunt Hall.

FIRE BREAKS OUT IN MITCHELL HIGH'S CHEMISTRY LABORATORY
Tags: us_FL, laboratory, fire, response, unknown_chemical

TRINITY --
Fire broke out in a chemistry lab in Mitchell High School in Trinity Wednesday night.

Firefighters responded to the call, which came in at 7:28 p.m. When they arrived, they found the fire in the science and technology building on the school's campus, which is located at 2323 Little Road.

Crews had the fire knocked down about 15 minutes after they arrived. Officials said the fire was contained to a chemistry lab, but smoke did get into about a dozen classrooms. Those rooms will be aired out overnight.

Classes are expected to be in session Thursday, but school officials say it will be a "modified campus." They say they'll have to find other rooms for some classes to meet.

Officials don't have a damage estimate yet, but they say that since the fire happened at night, students weren't in the classroom and no one has been hurt.

The State Fire Marshal has been called to investigate.

Montgomery Co., VA - A Montgomery County man faces charges after investigators say he was injured in an explosion while cooking methamphetamine.

According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to Lewis-Gale Montgomery after 34 year old Jeremy Hatfield, of Elliston, came in for treatment for chemical and fire burns.

That led investigators to a home on Roanoke Road, near Shawsville, where they say they found evidence of the drug being made.

Captain Brian Wright tells us the explosion blew out two doors in the garage.

Charges against Hatfield and a second man are pending.

SMALL FIRE AT CONOVER BUSINESS DOES LITTLE DAMAGE
Tags: us_NC, industrial, fire, response, waste

CONOVER, N.C. ‰?? A small fire Wednesday afternoon at a Conover business drew three different fire department but yielded almost no damage.
Conover Fire Chief Mark Hinson said at the scene the call about the fire came in about 3 p.m. It only took about 35 minutes to control the fire.
The company, Armacell, makes foam products, Hinson said. When the makeup of the product changes, the chief said, it can cause chemical reactions that can catch fire.
Wednesday‰??s fire was small and contained to some of the foam. Hinson said the department didn‰??t spray much water except to extinguish some smoldering remnants lying outside the building. Fires are rare at the building, Hinson said, but a dumpster fire was called in last week at the same business.

ECOLOGY: 9,600 GALLONS OF HYDROGEN PEROXIDE SPILLED FROM TANK AT PORT OF OLYMPIA

A recent chemical spill at the Port of Olympia was larger than first reported, according to state Department of Ecology documents obtained through a public records request.

The documents also shed light on the strength of hydrogen peroxide that spilled from a tank at the port‰??s marine terminal about noon on Jan. 28.

The spill led to a large emergency response. S everal businesses within a quarter-mile of the marine terminal were evacuated; some employees were asked to stay indoors.

Hydrogen peroxide is used in the port‰??s stormwater treatment process, re-introducing oxygen into the water before it is released into Budd Inlet.

The chemical was stored in a 10,000-gallon storage tank, not a 3,300-gallon tank, the documents show, which includes a report produced by state Department of Ecology spill responders.

Olympia Fire Department put out a news release following the spill, specifically stating that the leak emerged from a smaller-size tank.

OCFA: MAN WHO WAS FOUND IN PUDDLE OF POOL CHEMICALS IN BUENA PARK DIES
Tags: us_CA, public, release, death, cleaners, pool_chemicals

A man died late Tuesday night after he was exposed to a mixture of potent pool chemicals at a Buena Park apartment complex, officials said.

Chang Jun, 67 of Buena Park died around 11 p.m. at UCI Medical Center in Orange, less than four hours after he was found semi-conscious near spilled, yellow liquid inside a garage at the Richmont apartment complex, 6386 Lincoln Ave.

Jun, who lived in the apartment complex and possibly worked as the pool cleaner, may have inhaled toxic fumes from the chemical inside the garage, which caused him to fall unconscious, knocking them over and causing the spill, officials said.

Orange County Fire Authority officials lifted Jun out of a puddle of yellow chemicals, which omitted a yellow gas, and authorities sprayed both Jun and the exposed firefighters with water before cutting off Jun's clothes, OCFA Capt. Steve Concialdi said.

Jun had severe burns to his back, face and respiratory tract, including his lungs, Concialdi said.

He was taken by Anaheim Fire & Rescue officials to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he later died.

BREAKING NEWS: HAZMAT TEAM RESPONDS TO SAN MATEO HOTEL FOR POSSIBLE POOL CHEMICAL SPILL
Tags: us_CA, public, release, response, chlorine, pool_chemicals

SAN MATEO (BCN) ‰?? A hazardous materials crew was dispatched this morning to a hotel in San Mateo to investigate what may be a spill of pool chemicals, according
to police.

The incident was reported 10:45 a.m. at the Residence Inn at 2000 Winward Way, according to police.

‰??It looks like the pool maintenance crew spilled some chemicals,‰?? Sgt. Rick Decker said.

Decker said the pool put off an odor and chlorine may be responsible for the smell. The hazmat crew is investigating to ensure that there is no threat to the public, Decker said.

Police are asking hotel guests to remain in their rooms and shelter in place and street closures are in effect on Winward Way.

Officials at the Residence Inn could not immediately be reached for comment.

A HARD LOOK AT THE RISKS OF TRANSPORTING OIL ON RAIL TANKER CARS
Tags: transportation, discovery, environmental, other_chemical

Marcus Stern has spent the past year investigating the practice. Recent accidents in Canada and U.S. show that the cars aren't built for carrying so much oil, he says, and tracks are deteriorating.
