Position Summary*
Under the general direction of the EHS Director the Academic & Research Safety Manager/Chemical Hygiene Officer (ARSM-CHO) is responsible for developing, implementing and administering occupational health and safety programs for San Francisco State University.
This includes, but is not limited to:
- developing an overall University chemical hygiene plan
- assisting/facilitating SFSU colleges and departments in the development and implementation of their local chemical hygiene plans
- reviewing and approving appropriate laboratory safety plans and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for higher hazard campus laboratories and academic facilities
- guiding the University's chemical and hazardous material purchasing and acquisition program
- providing technical and regulatory assistance with occupational health, safety and chemical/industrial hygiene issues
- creating and implementing technically relevant training & education programs that meet regulatory requirements and amplify EHS's support mission across the continuum of the SFSU community
- developing and administering a comprehensive hazardous materials compliance and audit program
- performing accident investigations, employee exposure assessments, and conducting industrial hygiene monitoring
Minimum Qualifications*
- Baccalaureate Degree in Chemistry, Biology, Environmental Health, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene or closely related field - Master's or Doctorate Degree preferred
- Significant experience working for a university or large public or non-profit entity/institution with a wide variety of complex, potential hazards and exposures
- Real-world laboratory skills in a high-level academic research & teaching environment
- Knowledgeable and familiar with chemical safety and industrial hygiene practices [certification as an Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or as a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) is preferred]
- Minimum six (6) years of demonstrated, progressive and related professional work experience
- Demonstrated and practical knowledge about Radiation Safety, Biological Safety, and Laser Safety programs in a high-level academic environment (service as a Radiation Safety/RSO, Biosafety/BSO, and/or Laser Safety Officer/LSO preferred)
- Practical working knowledge of chemical detection and industrial hygiene monitoring equipment and occupational/environmental health sampling and monitoring techniques
- Extensive knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, regulations, policies and procedures associated with chemical and industrial hygiene, and laboratory and environmental safety
- Demonstrated, progressive experience working with electronic databases, data management software and records management software and preparing and reviewing technical reports
- Familiarity with chemical inventory and laboratory audit management software systems
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience performing risk assessments and communicating risks to employees, managers, supervisors, department heads and university leaders, and the public
- Demonstrated effective performance and oversight of safety & compliance audits, inspections and reviews
- Thorough knowledge of the equipment and procedures used in science and other course-related laboratories and facilities [examples: fine arts, health care, anthropology/museum studies, medical]
- Facile knowledge about facilities/maintenance chemicals and associated chemical hygiene practices
- Superb, demonstrated administrative, supervisory, teaching and informal advising/coaching skills.
- Demonstrated, effective ability to communicate, collaborate and lead across organizational lines in a fast-paced, multi-tasking academic and research environment
