DCHAS members who attended the SF National Meeting may remember that Allison spoke at the Green Labs symposium DCHAS organized there.

Re: lab equipment and facilities survey

Hi,

I'm writing to request your help. Our non-profit, My Green Lab, in collaboration with kW Engineering, the Western Cooling Efficiency Center, and Fisher-Nickel, Inc, has been working towards developing a center for independent, objective, 3rd-party testing of laboratory equipment energy efficiency. We have already gathered tremendous support for this project, from manufacturers and architects to scientists and facility managers.

We brought our idea to the California utility companies, and they too have been supportive of this endeavor - in fact, they want to provide the funding for it.

However, before we can begin to test the equipment, and validate many of the field tests that you all have done, the utility companies have requested that we collect data about the amount, type, and usage of lab equipment from scientists, as well as information about lab ventilation systems from facilities managers. We will use this information to inform and guide our equipment testing priorities. We will also use the data to demonstrate that the market is sufficiently large to justify an investment from the utility companies to continue with the project.

Please complete the survey (link below) and please send it to everyone you know who works in a lab or is responsible for managing buildings with labs. Below the link is a paragraph I have used in emails to scientists to ask for their help. Anyone - from undergrads to PIs - is qualified to fill out the survey. Likewise, anyone who knows about their lab facilities is also qualified to complete the survey. I know many of us on this forum have been working towards an Energy Star rating for lab equipment for a long time, and this represents a real opportunity for us to make that happen.

The survey takes ~15 minutes to complete, and everyone who completes it will be entered into a drawing to win a MacBook Air. We will keep the survey open until mid-January 2015, and the results of our assessment will be publicly available in March.

Although this is a California initiative we are asking people from around the country for their input. And if you have data about your lab or about your organization that does not fit into the format of the survey but would be valuable for us to know (e.g. total number of gas lasers at your institution) please don't hesitate to email that information to me directly.

If you have any questions please let me know. Thank you in advance for your help and support! Best, Allison

We all know laboratories consume a lot of energy and water. Our organization‰??s goal is to decrease lab-related energy and water consumption, and your operating expenses. Please help us better understand the type of equipment used in your lab and what opportunities you see for energy and water efficiency. Your input is invaluable ‰?? you are the only one who knows how your lab operates, and your insights into how it might operate more efficiently will allow us to develop incentives and services to help you do so. Thank you in advance for your time!
