I'm pleased to let the list know that four organizations are partnering to put on a day long "Fume Hood Design for the 21st Century: A Cross-Disciplinary Workshop". The goal of the workshop is to develop a report that describes key questions that should be considered at the institutional level in developing standards for fume hood performance and options for answering those questions. For many institutions, this is an ongoing challenge, given the changing nature of the sciences hoods support; the complex group of stakeholders involved in designing and operating lab ventilation system; and the changing lab ventilation technologies that have emerged in the last decade.

We have begun the planning process for the workshop content. The current schedule of the workshop and an outline of the issues to be discussed can be found at

This is a blog-based site, so viewers have the ability to comment on the questions we are considering. We'd appreciate feedback people have on the topics currently identified and others that should be considered as part of this discussion.

The co-sponsors of the workshop are:
- the New England Chapter of the International Institute for Sustainably Laboratories,
- the American Chemical Society Division of Chemical Health and Safety,
- the Campus Consortium for Environmental Excellence, and
- the Campus Safety, Health and Environmental Management Association.

The workshop will take place on October 29, 2014 from 9 AM ? 3 PM Eastern Daylight Time at the Four Points Sheraton in Norwood, MA.
