92-YEAR-OLD TURRET MAN FOUND DEAD IN HOME WITH STOCKPILE OF EXPLOSIVES, CHEMICALS
Tags: us_CO, public, explosion, death, bomb, explosives

TURRET, Colo. - An autopsy is scheduled Monday to determine what killed a 92-year-old Turret man who was found dead in his home, which was stocked with large amount of explosives.

A friend found the body of Edwin Bartheld in Bartheld‰??s crawlspace on Friday, the Chaffee County Sheriff‰??s Office said.

It appeared that he had been dead for several days, the sheriff‰??s office said. Initially, authorities suspected that he died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. But now investigators believe he was killed when one of his homemade explosive devices accidentally detonated, the sheriff‰??s office said.

The sheriff‰??s office said when they were called to the man‰??s home on Friday afternoon, they discovered a large cache of explosive devices and chemicals commonly used for manufacturing explosives. Detectives had to back out of the house and call for the Colorado Springs Regional Explosives Unit and two nearby HAZMAT teams to secure the scene.

On Saturday, members of the bomb squad and HAZMAT teams found large quantities of chemicals commonly used for manufacturing explosives, along with several homemade detonators and homemade explosives inside the house.

The explosives were removed and safely detonated by the bomb specialists while the HAZMAT team identified chemicals and mixtures to assure they were stable before they were removed from the house.

BLAZE DESTROYS MORGAN SINDALL NOTTINGHAM LAB PROJECT ë? CONSTRUCTION ENQUIRER
Tags: United_Kingdom, laboratory, follow-up, response, unknown_chemical

Morgan Sindall‰??s nearly-finished å£16m chemistry lab project in Nottingham has been destroyed after fire engulfed the building on Friday night

Sixty fire fighters and 10 engines battled to bring the fierce blaze under under control but they were unable to save the timber building.

The project was part funded by GlaxoSmithKlein and was billed to be the world‰??s first zero carbon chemistry laboratory.

Instead it has highlighted how vulnerable timber-frame structures are to fire during the construction phase.

LEAKY CHEMICAL TRUCK PROMPTS EMERGENCY ALERT FOR NEARBY RESIDENTS
Tags: us_WA, transportation, release, injury, flammables, solvent

A tanker truck leaking a hazardous chemical shut down Interstate 90 near the Washington-Idaho state line for hours today and released fumes that sickened two police officers and prompted officials to advise nearby residents to stay indoors.

The truck was parked at the Washington State Patrol weigh station and Port of Entry just east of Liberty Lake. At 9 p.m. an emergency alert was issued advising anyone within a half mile of there to take shelter indoors with their windows closed and air conditioning off.

The warning was prompted by two police officers south of the interstate who complained of throat irritation and headaches, said Andy Hail, deputy chief of the Spokane Valley Fire Department.

The Florida-based truck is carrying 7,000 gallons of anhydrous trimethylamine, a flammable substance used in making solvents, animal feed supplements and products consumed by the paper, oil and gas industries.

The rare decision to shut down the freeway in both directions was intended to keep drivers away from the truck, parked just along the westbound lanes. Traffic backed up for miles at detours in Liberty Lake and Post Falls.

SKINNY CHEF: HOW TO PUT OUT A GREASE FIRE (VIDEO)
Tags: public, fire, response, other_chemical

Over the last three weeks, two of my neighbors experienced kitchen fires. As a professional cook, it has happened to me many times, as well. If you're cooking a lot, like many of my foodie friends, it's really a matter of when - not if - you'll experience your first fire.

Because it happens so rarely for most people, they can become scared and startled when a fire occurs. So invest 3 minutes to learn the proper techniques for dealing with kitchen fires!

Because my neighbors didn't know if they were able to handle the fire, they called in the fire fighters - which is always a good idea, if you're not sure you can handle it yourself!

NEIGHBORS COLLECT COMPLAINTS ABOUT CHEMICAL PLANT
Tags: us_MS, industrial, release, environmental, phosphoric_acid, sulfuric_acid

PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) - An Environmental Protection Agency inspector, during a tour of Mississippi Phosphates in 2009, walked through a puddle so acidic it ate leather off the inspector‰??s steel-toed boots.

The inspector‰??s vivid account is one of dozens from an inspection that year that yielded a biting administrative order from the EPA to the company, using the words ‰??imminent and substantial‰?? danger when referring to the possible impact on human health or the environment.

The federal agency ordered the company to fix uncontrolled leaks and spills of sulfuric acid on its grounds, and stop untreated discharges to the adjacent bayou and uncontrolled spills and leaks of phosphoric acid to unlined ditches. The agency found more issues in 2011, and in 2012, reinforced its orders to clean up. Then last year, the state Department of Environmental Quality shut down two plants at the fertilizer manufacturer because they were creating an acid mist that caused neighboring industry to evacuate workers.

All the while, a neighborhood less than a mile away says it was unaware of the reports. Cherokee Forest has 132 homes along heavily industrialized Bayou Casotte in east Pascagoula, where several industries contribute heavily to air emissions.

PARSIPPANY ‰?? Parsippany Fire Volunteer District 6 was first on scene at Zimmer Trabecular Metal Technology at approximately 11:00 a.m. on a report of a chemical spill. Zimmer is located at 10 Pomery Road.

Captain Vincent Petito, Capt. 61, established command. Crews from Engine 65 began evacuating workers and assessing the leak.

After detecting a heavy smell of chlorine gas, District 5 HazMat team was called to the scene along with Lake Parsippany Volunteer Fire District 3.

Morris County HazMat, Picatinny Arsenal HazMat and Whippany HazMat were also called to the scene to assist with removal of leaking chlorine tank.

Also New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection provided assistance.

The tank was secured and removed and building was cleared of any chlorine gas.

One worker who was closest to the leaking tank was immediately taken to Morristown Memorial Hospital by a coworker.

GREEN BAY CREWS RESPOND TO HAZMAT CALL, POSSIBLE FIRE
Tags: us_WI, industrial, release, response, ammonia

Firefighters from the Green Bay Metro Fire Department were called to hazardous materials situation and possible fire Friday night on the near west side of Green Bay just before 9 p.m.

Crews were sent to a building near the intersection of Alexander and McDonald streets, just west of the Fox River, for a report of an ammonia smell. While investigating the smell, crews reported a possible fire in a nearby building, according to radio traffic.

Hazardous material crews were called to the scene. Workers at nearby businesses were being told to leave the immediate area shortly before 10 p.m.

Around 10:15 p.m., Green Bay police said they anticipated shutting off power to part of the area surrounding the incident site to protect firefighters on scene. It wasn't known how big an area would be affected or for how long.

RED CHEMICAL FOAM ON CT SHORES AFTER ‰??FIRE BALLS‰?? EXPLODE IN BRIDGEPORT
Tags: us_CT, industrial, explosion, injury, other_chemical

Two firefighters are recovering Friday morning after being injured in a massive fire at Rowayton Trading Company that started Thursday, Sept. 11.

At the 10:30 a.m. press conference, officials said about 1500 people are still without power. They also said it‰??s a miracle more houses nearby didn‰??t catch fire because they are close together in the area.

More than 80 firefighters battled the five alarm fire. About 50 people were employed by the two companies in the building.

55,000 gallons of chemical compound used to create perfume were stored in the building, Bridgeport Fire Officials said in a press conference Friday morning. Dozens of firefighters still remain on the scene.

After a fire broke out, the compound ignited and created ‰??fire ball‰?? explosions that sounds like ‰??bombs‰?? exploding, Mayor Bill Finch told FOX CT.

Now there is a red foam on the surface of nearby water, a Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) official said. Investigators are working with the Centers for Disease control to determine the toxicity of the red foam.

NORTH POLE REFINERY SETTLES HAZMAT STORAGE ALLEGATIONS
Tags: us_AK, industrial, discovery, response, petroleum, waste

A petroleum refinery in North Pole, Alaska, has reached a settlement with US officials following allegations of mishandling hazardous waste during groundwater a cleanup at the refinery.

On June 19, 2013, Flint Hills Resources conducted groundwater cleanup activities at its refinery that generated spent groundwater pre-filters containing iron sulfide. The spent groundwater pre-filters were disposed of in an exposed, uncovered ‰??roll off‰?? dumpster where they soon ignited, causing two container fires. The fires required local fire department assistance to extinguish.

The settlement includes a civil penalty of $80,000.

According to Scott Downey, manager of EPA‰??s Air & Hazardous Waste Compliance Unit in Seattle, under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), waste generators are required to determine whether or not their waste is hazardous at the time of generation, then label it clearly and store it properly.

NITROGEN LEAK LED TO EVACUATION AT UC
Tags: us_OH, laboratory, release, response, liquid_nitrogen

A leaking tank of liquid nitrogen at the University of Cincinnati prompted UC police to call in a hazardous materials unit Thursday.

The leak occurred in a mechanical engineering research lab in Rhodes Hall around 4:40 p.m., according to emergency communications.

Officials evacuated the building for about 20 minutes until the tank was removed.

The culprit of the leak was a faulty catch valve on the nitrogen tank, said Mark Schulz, a mechanical engineering professor.

Schulz said no one was put in danger because of the leak.
