I am usually just a spectator on this list as well as several others. But I wanted to jump in with a few comments.
First of all, the person doing the demonstration is most likely not a safety professional and I would speculate that this person has not received much laboratory training or safety training.
Even if the person has a chemistry degree, many degree programs only teach fundamental safety in their respective curriculum.
Additionally, if this person or others who have accidents performing this experiment have degrees in education, they very likely do not have much chem lab experience at all.
This is why I became excited when David Finste proposed to develop ideas that would incorporate lab safety into chem degree programs, and I immediately jumped on board to help him and others develop a new safety oriented academic program culture.
