We require training:
·
Upon hire
·
When hazards change
·
Annually
Refresher training looks similar but not exact. There are written policies and online training but there is also instructor-led training. Getting the information out using multiple communication methods seems
to be helpful as some people absorb information better from each of the different communication methods.
In our lab, I train everyone on all hazards instead of just on the hazards for their specific job.. I have received useful feedback from doing this. Some of the feedback changed the safety training and some
changed safety policies and workplace practices.
As silly as it might seem, we also use quizzes, crossword puzzles, and word searches to reinforce training themes. People actually like them and we choose one correct entry to receive a small, safety-related
prize. Smoke detectors and first aid kits are really popular as are carbon monoxide detectors, roadside hazard kits, kitchen fire extinguishers, etc.

A quick poll of any who care to answer: how often do you require training for personnel in areas that fall under OSHA’s Laboratory Standard? Do you follow what the regulation
says (upon hire, when hazards change, etc.), do you train everyone annually, or do you do something else? If you require refresher training, does it look different than the initial training?
