If any of you check out CNN.com or get email from Lab Manager, you will have noticed an Opinion piece titled “The Risk Women Face in Science”
and a subject line which starts with “Time to Man Up Ladies”. And now a LabCandy discussion! Seems like the stars are aligned.

Katherine: Wow. Thanks for the thoughtful response. I came to this opinion immediately because I spent a considerable portion of my early life on the stage being
eye-candy. Yes, that was a LONG, LONG time ago. The eye candy elements now have dropped a few inches closer to sea level.
There is nothing wrong with being eye candy when it is appropriate. It is NOT appropriate when the personal attributes needed for competition are intellectual.
And the inevitable competition to be the best eye candy in the room would be destructive to the aspirations of those girls who can't measure up in that category. Give the girls the opportunity to compete with their brains and there will be an entirely different
pecking order in that room.
Only successful women are expected to be intelligent, accomplished, gainfully employed and be eye-candy in the bargain. It would be tough for most men with their
thinning hair and lined faces to make the grade if their looks mattered. Being handsome is not a requirement for men to be successful. Removing the beauty requirement frees men to compete in other ways.
Free the girls as well.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] "labcandy"
I've been thinking about this all weekend. I believe strongly that 'we' need to do more to get the girls' attention about being scientists. And the lab coats and safety goggles bling
is great. But the name "labcandy" is too close to "eye candy", in my humble opinion. All girls / young women (and I am the mother of one and used to be one!) want to be "eye candy". So, are we trying to get girls into science so the guys have something better
to look at than the old nerd in the white lab coat? I agree with Monona, this is demeaning for the girls. Can't we interest them in science because that's what the world/earth/people/food/etc. is based on?
Thanks for reading my two cents.
