POSITION: Environmental Health and Safety Officer
SUPERVISOR: Chair of Chemistry & Biochemistry & Director of Facilities Services
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work performed by people assigned to this classification. It reflects management’s assignment of essential functions; it does not prescribe or restrict the tasks that may be assigned.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Formulate and direct policies to provide a safe atmosphere within the Albright College community and to comply with all federal, state and local environmental and safety regulations. Reporting will be to Chair of the Chemistry & Biochemistry Department and the Director of Facilities. Conducts health and safety audits, hazard identification and assessments within various departments; provides regular health and safety information and training in concert with the Human Resources Department.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Evaluates the facility for safety, health and environmental risks.
- Develops health and safety procedures and programs for the college and monitors safety compliance to reduce risks.
- Maintains contingency plans, including fire prevention, and procedures for controlling hazardous incidents in accordance with government regulations and insurance company requirements.
- Supervises maintenance of material safety data sheets so they are accessible at all times according to regulations.
- Develops inspection policies and establishes regular inspection schedules.
- Serves as resource for emergency preparedness, confined spaces, electrical safety, machine guarding, fall protection and forklift safety.
- Coordinate with the Human Resources Department relevant training sessions to minimize work-related injuries and ensure safety and compliance on campus.
- Maintains EPA records of hazardous waste, air emission permitting, and water pollution discharge, as well as industrial health monitoring and records of employee hazard exposure according to OSHA regulations; preparing and filing reports as necessary.
- Monitors professional literature and attends seminars to stay current with governmental compliance requirements.
- Maintains chemical inventory, (ordering, tracking, arranging appropriate disposal), for biology and chemistry and biochemistry departments.
- Oversees hazardous waste storage and disposal policies and processes for the College, including proper labeling.
- Serves as chemical hygiene officer, ensuring meeting OSHA standards for labs, pool, art studios, facilities, etc.)..
- Ensures lab safety by providing training as needed for faculty members, staff and students for Chemistry, Biochemistry and Biology departments.
- Supervises student aides as necessary.
- Provides reports at departmental meetings on chemical hygiene activities.
- Works closely with the Human Resources, Facilities Services and Operations, Housing, Public Safety, Gable Health Center, and the Chair of the Chemistry and Biochemistry and Biology Departments and others as appropriate to implement and administer various safety-related campus initiatives and policies.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Working knowledge and practical experience in environmental, health and safety operations.
- Working knowledge of chemical handling
- Strong organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to coordinate operations across various departments
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Proficient in all aspects of Microsoft Office
- Ability to work effectively with diverse group of constituents
- Capacity to work independently
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and complete projects accurately
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Able to work in moderate exposure to unusual elements such as varying temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, unpleasant odors
- Lift objects up to 50 pounds
- Sit, stand or walk for some period of time
- Work in environments that involve potentially dangerous materials that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety or, with relevant experience, a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, chemistry, biochemistry, or related field
