ACID SPILL AT WRIGHT STATE
Tags: us_OH, laboratory, release, injury, acetic_acid
Wright State University canceled all classes and activities for the remainder of the day after an acid spill on campus forced the evacuation of nine buildings.
Acetic acid, used to clean glass and laboratories, was spilled in the basement of Oelman Hall at 9:50 a.m. when a lab technician dropped a 2.5-liter bottle of the chemical, said Steve Farrell, director of environmental health and safety
Oelman, Fawcett Hall and Brehm Laboratory were evacuated first, and then Allyn, Millet, Biological Sciences I and II, Dunbar Library and the Library Annex. Hundreds of students and staff were also told to avoid the tunnels that connect the buildings.
All classes after 1:30 p.m. were canceled at the main campus.
The affected buildings are closed until further notice, according to the university's website. The spill was cleaned and the buildings and tunnels vented because of a lingering smell.
A police officer was taken to Soin Medical Center as a precaution.
"It can be very dangerous if it's a very high concentration, but we got everyone in time," Farrell said of the acid. "We don't feel there was any hazard to anyone."
Junior Seth Clouser said he was in his classics class on the second floor of Fawcett when an alarm went off and then a person came over the loud speaker and told them to evacuate. "I looked out the window and I could see there were cops cars and there was a fire truck," he said. "They said there was an emergency in your building."

An alleged Auckland drug ring was discovered after a methamphetamine laboratory blew up forcing a meth cook to go to hospital, claiming he had spilt "hot oil" on his legs, prosecutors say.
Prosecutor Anna Pollett told a jury in the High Court in Auckland today that the explosion in Culperry Rd, Glendene, led to a year-long investigation that culminated in the discovery of 4.4 kilograms of pseudoephedrine, more than $1 million in cash and assets and the arrest of the 12 men on trial.
The group, dubbed "The Drug Trading Company" by prosecutors, are facing 130 charges relating to the manufacture and supply of methamphetamine and the meth precursor, pseudoephedrine, throughout Auckland.
Other charges relate to participating in an organised criminal group, conspiring to pervert the course of justice and possession of cannabis.

CHEMICAL ACCIDENT INJURES ONE

An accident Monday morning at a Dalton chemical plant injured one worker and caused officials to briefly close streets around the plant.
The accident happened around 6 a.m. at MFG Chemical on Kimberly Park Drive as workers were mixing chemicals in a reactor.
?We don?t know exactly what happened but the lid did not shut completely or did not shut properly,? said Dalton Fire Chief Bruce Satterfield.
Chemical fumes escaped from the reactor, overcoming one worker.
?It?s our understanding he was right on top of the reactor,? Satterfield said.
The man was taken by ambulance to WellStar Cobb Hospital in Austell. Satterfield did not know the extent of the man?s injuries.
Satterfield said four chemicals were being mixed: maleic anhydride molten low acid grade, alfa olefin 20-24, di-tert-butyl peroxide and aromatic 100 fluid. Officials said the mixture was not poisonous but an irritant.
Satterfield said the chemical reaction did not last long.

POMONA ? Three workers at a Quaker Road pharmaceutical laboratory were taken to Nyack Hospital on Tuesday after being exposed to a potentially lethal chemical compound.
Officials said a chemist under contract with Barr Laboratories Inc. was pouring 50 milligrams of powdered potassium cyanide into a 100 milliliter liquid solution when the mixture boiled over about 4:50 p.m.
"The product splashed up on one of the scientists' face," said Chris Kear, Rockland County deputy fire coordinator. "He immediately notified the personnel around him and the scientist had water flushed to his face for about 15 minutes and was decontaminated within the unit."
The contract employee, whose identity was not released, was said to be conscious and alert during the emergency response. He was taken by the Haverstraw Ambulance Corps to Nyack Hospital for further decontamination and evaluation, officials said.
Two other scientists working inside the 1,500-square-foot room also were exposed to the chemical mixture. Those men, ages 29 and 31, were not identified, but were said to be employed directly by Barr Laboratories, which is operated by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd. All victims were expected to recover, Kear said.
Four volunteers from the Hillcrest Fire Department were decontaminated at the scene as a precautionary measure, Kear said. They were uninjured and did not require hospitalization.

A distillery worker has been taken to hospital following a chemical incident at the Clynelish Distillery in Brora.
The alarm was raised at 18:45 on Tuesday after two substances were accidentally mixed together producing chlorine gas.
About 30 firefighters, some wearing specialist protective clothing, dealt with the incident.
The man who was exposed to the gas was taken to hospital in Inverness and was kept in overnight as a precaution.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) said the man was treated at Raigmore Hospital for breathing difficulties.

OFFICIALS: CHEMICAL ODOR HARMLESS AT UMD
Tags: us_MA, education, release, response, other_chemical
DARTMOUTH ? A strange odor detected in central receiving at UMass Dartmouth Tuesday came from a commonly used restroom deodorant, officials said.
Col. Emil Fioravanti, UMass director of public safety and campus police chief, said there was no chemical spillage and nothing to worry about.
Fioravanti said that around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, employees detected a chemical odor during the routine delivery of solvents to central receiving, located in the campus public safety building.
The odor was determined to have come from a cardboard box that had contained a glass bottle of ortho-dichlorobenzene, a chemical commonly used as a deodorant for restrooms, an insecticide and in the manufacture of organic chemicals and in plastics, dyes and pharmaceuticals, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

BURLINGTON, Vt. -
A hazmat scare led to the evacuation of a building at UVM Monday afternoon.
Burlington Fire officials say it happened inside a lab at Delehanty Hall on the Trinity Campus around 3:30 p.m.
That's when they say malfunctioning ventilation equipment led to acidic fumes backing up inside the facility.
A lab sensor set off one alarm and then a staffer pulled the fire alarm to clear the building.
Authorities say no one came in contact with the fumes.
More than 15 first responders from a number of agencies were called to the scene.
The fumes were cleared and no one was hurt.

UPDATE: CHEMICAL EXPLOSION IN DALTON; RESIDENTS SHOULD STAY INDO
Tags: us_TN, industrial, release, injury, peroxide
PREVIOUS STORY: Dalton Police have lifted their "shelter in place" advisory after this morning's chemical reaction at the MFG Chemical facility in Dalton. Nearby roads have been re-opened.
Dalton Police and Dalton Fire responded to a chemical reaction that happened about 6:00am at the MFG Chemical plant on Kimberly Park Drive.
Originally the incident was dispatched as an explosion, but as more information was gathered by the Dalton Police and Fire Departments, it was re-classified as a 'reaction."
According to Dalton Fire Department, workers were dumping chemicals into a reactor. One worker did not close lid fast enough, and the ensuing reaction injured two people. The chemical reaction was from Malaic Anhydride Long Chain Alcohol.
"Organic peroxide was the last chemical to be put in," explained Fire Chief Bruce Satterfield. "It's stated that the worker did not get the lid closed fast enough. When the peroxide is being put in, it's going to react to the other chemicals. But at that point, I don't think he got it closed soon enough therefore the reaction sort of came out and unfortunately his head and face was still near the reactor."

FRACKING FIRE INTENSIFIES PUSH TO CHANGE OHIO CHEMICAL DISCLOSURE LAWS / PUBLIC NEWS SERVICE

WOODSFIELD, Ohio - Environmentalists say the recent fire at a hydraulic fracturing well in southeastern Ohio highlights the flaws in state and federal disclosure laws for chemicals used in "fracking."
The fire at the Monroe County well site on June 28 spread to 20 nearby trucks on the drilling pad, and required additional firefighters from six counties to contain it. Melissa English, development director with Ohio Citizen Action, says first responders were probably unaware of the chemicals involved in the accident because the only ones listed were "condensate and produced water."
"There were more chemicals on-site at the time of the fire, because they had started fracking by that time," says English. "They had started actually stimulating the well to produce oil and gas, which they hadn't done at the time the hazardous chemical inventory was filed last year."

CHEMICAL USED IN SCIENCE CLASS TRIGGERS EVACUATION, HAZMAT SCARE AT THE HOCKADAY SCHOOL
Tags: us_TX, laboratory, discovery, response, peroxide
An improperly discarded chemical triggered a hazardous materials response and evacuation at The Hockaday School this afternoon.
The high explosive acetone peroxide was found on campus after being used in a science class a few weeks ago. The chemical didn?t pose an immediate threat, Dallas Fire-Rescue Lt. Joel Lavender said, but officials evacuated the school as a precaution. The school currently hosts various summer camp programs.
Members of the Dallas bomb squad detonated the chemical in an empty field nearby, although according to Lavender, they didn?t need to blow it up.
?It was a cleaner end of the story,? he said.

CHEMICALS EYED IN SCHOOL JANITOR?S DEATH
Tags: us_MA, education, release, death, unknown_chemical
Authorities are investigating whether yesterday?s death of a 53-year-old Plymouth school custodian was caused by the same chemical exposure that apparently sickened 11 people.
Chester Flattery of Plymouth was discovered shortly after 8 a.m. by a Manomet Elementary School secretary, said schools Superintendent Gary Maestas.
Flattery had been on the job, cleaning floors, for only an hour when his body was found, Maestas said at a press conference.
?He was a loving husband and a wonderful father,? Flattery?s wife, Linda, said.
Plymouth Police Chief Michael Botieri told reporters that officers and other emergency workers who responded to a report of an unresponsive man at the school became ill.
?Some of them had headaches, and there was some type of an odor in there,? Botieri said.
In all, three firefighters, three police officers, two state troopers, two paramedics and one school employee were transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Plymouth for evaluation due to symptoms of possible chemical exposure, authorities said.
The building was evacuated, and the State Hazardous Materials Team from the office of the state fire marshal responded to the scene. The building remained closed for the rest of the day as the team tried to identify the chemical agent.

PORT ARTHUR, Texas ? Chevron Phillips Chemical says two people are injured after a fire at its Port Arthur facility.
A statement from the company says the situation at the southeast Texas chemical plant is "under control" and that all personnel have been accounted for.
Public Affairs Manager David Hastings says the fire that started about 8 p.m. was contained late Monday but not totally out.
Hastings declined to say whether the two injured were employees or to further identify them or say if they were hospitalized.
The Port Arthur Fire Department says it was not called to the scene and could not provide any further details.
The company says the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
Port Arthur is about 90 miles east of Houston.

WEST VIRGINIA CHEMICAL SPILL SETS OFF A WASTE DISPUTE
Tags: us_WV, industrial, follow-up, environmental, waste
Six months after a chemical spill fouled a vital West Virginia water supply, a fight is brewing over the tons of waste it left behind.
The small city of Hurricane, W.Va., and surrounding Putnam County, want two subsidiaries of Waste Management Inc. WM +0.54% that operate a local landfill to dig up and remove 228 tons of waste containing the chemical that contaminated the region's water supply in January.
The municipalities sued the companies in federal court in May, arguing that the waste is hazardous and not suited to the solid-waste landfill that handles ordinary trash.
They said rain and leached materials eventually flow to a collection pond, and then a wastewater treatment plant before being discharged into a creek.
"We're trying to prevent the inevitable pollution of another river," said Michael Callaghan, a Charleston attorney representing Hurricane.
