TRIAL POSTPONED IN UC DAVIS EXPLOSIVES CASE

Former University of California, Davis, chemist David Snyder was headed to trial next month on explosives, hazardous waste, and firearms charges stemming from a 2013 explosion in his campus apartment. The trial has now been postponed to fall, with motions to be heard on Sept. 12, a ?trial setting conference? on Oct. 3, and the trial to start on Oct. 20.

CHEMICAL TANKER CATCHES FIRE, 7 VEHICLES GUTTED

In an untoward incident, a tanker carrying about 18,000 litres of ethyl alcohol, raw material used to make alcohol, caught fire after it turned turtle near the Parwanoo Himachal state barrier, about 15 km from Panchkula, on Tuesday morning. In the fire, two cars, five motorcycles and the sales tax collection depot were destroyed.
In all eight fire tenders were pressed into service and 20 rounds of water were used to douse the fire. It took firemen over six hours to put off the fire. Meanwhile, timely action by the Panchkula administration authorities and those from the fire department saved a lot of loss from happening. Had the tanker exploded the loss would have been colossal.

CHEMICAL EXPLOSION INJURES GRAD STUDENT AT UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA; BUILDING EVACUATED

MINNEAPOLIS ? A graduate student has suffered serious burns in a lab explosion at the University of Minnesota that prompted the building to be evacuated.
Minneapolis Fire Department crews were sent to Smith Hall around 1:10 p.m. Tuesday. Crews arrived to find one person suffering from burns after a volatile chemical compound exploded.
Authorities say the grad student at the College of Science and Engineering was conscious with serious burns, and was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. No other details about the student's condition were immediately available.
Crews evacuated the building, monitored for hazards and sealed the lab. About 50 people were evacuated. The building reopened about 5 1Ú2 hours later.
The fire department says there was no fire or structural damage. The cause of the explosion is unknown.

MAN DIES AFTER CHEMICAL EXPLOSION NEAR BOONVILLE

BOONVILLE, Mo. -
ABC 17 News confirmed a man died Monday evening after a chemical explosion over the weekend inside a home on Speed Drive south of Boonville.
Cooper County Sheriff Jerry Wolfe identified the victim as 60-year-old Earl Fredrich.
He was flown to University Hospital Saturday night with serious to his face. Emergency crews said a homemade explosive device used for target practice exploded, after the plastic cap blew off as it was being moved.

HAZMAT CALLED TO PERC SPILL

A small dry cleaning business was evacuated Tuesday in Pandosy Village after a machine leaked a toxic chemical.
Platoon Captain Dale Calhoun says a mechanic was working on a dry cleaner at 'Quality Cleaners' located in the Southgate strip mall when 12-litres of Tetrachloroethylene (also known as Perc) leaked from the machine.
?We received a called from Stutters that was here to clean-up some product that had leaked out of a dry-cleaning machine and what we found was that the product that had spilt, melted some plastic and got onto some carpet,? explains Calhoun.
Trained fire and hazmat crews attended and taped off the alley behind the business to vent the chemicals while business fronts remained open and unaffected.

CHLORINE MAKES SEVERAL PEOPLE SICK AT DAY SCHOOL

PORTAGE COUNTY, Ohio? Several people, including some children, had to be treated after chlorine fumes made them sick at Happy Day School on Brady Lake Rd. in Ravenna.
According to the Portage County sheriff, the call came in just before 1 p.m. Tuesday.
Someone at the school reportedly hit the emergency stop on the pool. When it was reset, fumes started coming out.
Eight people, six of them children, were taken to area hospitals; seven others were treated at the scene.

FIRE DOUSED AT CHEMICAL PLANT IN LONGVIEW

A faulty pump motor caused of a small fire Monday at Solvay Chemicals at 3500 Industrial Way in Longview.
And the chemical company?s fire suppression system saved the day, fire officials said.
The first 911 call came from plant employees at 6:37 p.m. and by the time the first fire units arrived 5 minutes later, the fire was out, Battalion Chief Kevin Taylor said.
The plant is equipped with an automatic sprinkler system and a large foam system, Taylor said.
?Nearby products included large tanks of hydrogen, which were not involved thanks to the sophisticated protection system present here,? Taylor said.
Damage estimates were not available. There were no injuries to Solvay employees or firefighters.

AT LEAST 20 FIREFIGHTERS DECONTAMINATED AFTER POSSIBLE CHEMICAL EXPOSURE AT PAWTUCKET FIRE

PAWTUCKET, Rhode Island ? Pawtucket officials say at least 20 firefighters had to be decontaminated after possibly being exposed to an unknown chemical while fighting a blaze at a commercial building.
Firefighters were called to the corner of Fairland and Mineral Spring avenues at about 2 a.m. Tuesday on reports of explosions and a fire. Authorities remain on the scene.
Pawtucket Battalion Chief Robert Neill told WPRI-TV (http://bit.ly/1i4ThAY">http://bit.ly/1i4ThAY ) that fire crews came across a 55-gallon barrel containing an unknown chemical, and hazmat crews were called in to investigate.
Officials say at least 20 firefighters may have been exposed to the chemical and were decontaminated, and one was brought to a hospital as a precaution.

(Reuters) - Dutch emergency services reported an explosion and fire at a chemicals plant in the southern Netherlands on Tuesday. It was unclear if anyone was hurt.
A tweet by regional emergency services said there had been a blast at a plastics production plant run by chemical company Caligen Europe in the southern town on Breda.

Calls for tighter scrutiny of environmental toxins found in the homes of most families got a recent boost, as the country's largest health care provider pledged to ban chemical flame retardants.
Kaiser Permanente announced a week ago Tuesday that it would stop buying furniture treated with chemical flame retardants linked to cancer and brain damage in children, among other ailments.
"Our mission is the health of our patients and of our communities ? and that mission includes paying attention to pollutants that can cause illness," Kathy Gerwig, vice president at Kaiser Permanente, said in a statement.

VANDERBILT FACILITY EVACUATED AFTER REPORTS OF CHEMICAL SPILL

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
A HAZMAT team was called to the Vanderbilt Case Cart Operations Center in north Nashville early Monday morning after reports of a hazardous chemical spill.
About a dozen employees were evacuated from the center on Briley Park Boulevard South due to a possible ethylene oxide leak around 2 a.m.
The chemical is used to clean surgical equipment and is highly flammable.
Firefighters arrived on scene but didn?t have the equipment needed to test the air quality so a HAZMAT team was called in to check the oxygen levels.
No ethylene oxide was detected and employees returned to the building just before 3 a.m.
The call was blamed on a faulty censor in the building.
