When Guidelines for Laboratory Design: Health, Safety, and Environmental Considerations, 4th ed. was written, the goal was to make it easier for lab users and designers to meet the many challenges and considerations inherent in laboratory design, such as complying with health, safety, and environmental requirements. The book emphasizes the critical nature of the communication between the laboratory users, construction engineers, administration, and environmental health and safety personnel for a successful lab design. Such a design provides the best place for scientists to engage in research or teaching with reduced health and safety risks, as has been discussed in this Journal.(1, 2) The authors make it quite clear that a safe and efficient lab does not come about just by hiring the best in the business, but through clear communication and genuine cooperation between all parties involved, including those who will be working in the lab.

A research team at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) has developed a small electronic sensing device that can alert users wirelessly to the presence of chemical vapors in the atmosphere. The technology, which could be manufactured using familiar aerosol-jet printing techniques, is aimed at myriad applications in military, commercial, environmental, healthcare and other areas.

The current design integrates nanotechnology and radio-frequency identification (RFID) capabilities into a small working prototype. An array of sensors uses carbon nanotubes and other nanomaterials to detect specific chemicals, while an RFID integrated circuit informs users about the presence and concentrations of those vapors at a safe distance wirelessly.

HARRISON COUNTY -- Fire crews from Lazana, Saucier and Harrison County extinguished a fire at a two-story home in less than 30 minutes Thursday evening, Harrison County Fire Marshal Pat Sullivan said.

Crews were called to a fire on Tim Bradley Road about 5:30 p.m. Sullivan said 11 firefighters and four trucks put out the fire in about 15 to 20 minutes. He said the home sustained smoke and fire damage but no one was injured.

Upon investigation, Sullivan said, officials found a stack of rags soaked with a wood-treating product had spontaneously combusted in a plastic trash can in an extension of the home that was under construction.

Sullivan said the fire was discovered early enough to prevent a total loss. He cautioned anyone using wood-treatment products to carefully read usage and storage labels.

Kahaluu Elementary was evacuated Thursday due to a chemical odor reported near the campus. School officials notified the Honolulu Fire Dept. of a suspicious odor in the area around 11:15 a.m.

Students and teachers complained of a horrid smell coming through the classrooms, causing itchy eyes and nausea. It was enough to make some of the children vomit.

?It was very intense at first, so I myself felt kind of nauseated, but I didn?t get myself checked out,? said Joelyn Kaina, a tutor at the school. ?But I had a sore tummy ache, (and felt) real light-headed and faint.?

?Everybody was complaining that their eyes were sore and then we just left,? said student Trinity Correa.

As a precaution, 25 students and six teachers were taken to Castle Medical Center or Kaiser Permanente.

?Any time you have a student complaining of shortness of breath, it needs to be taken seriously, though we did transfer them all in stable condition,? said Shayne Enright, public information officer for Emergency Medical Services.

During a routine shutdown, a fire started up Tuesday in some ductwork at an ethanol production plant in Monroe, WI, officials said.
The fire call for Badger State Ethanol came in at 2:50 a.m. Tuesday, Monroe Police Chief Fred Kelley said.
A small crew of employees was cleaning and doing maintenance during a routine plant shutdown when the fire started in corn dust inside ductwork.
Kelley said the first fire unit to arrive on scene could see flames coming from seams in the roof duct piping.
?At that point, Fire Chief Daryl Rausch called for a mutual aid box alarm system alert, which brought units from 12 other surrounding departments,? Kelley said.
Part of the process at the plant involves corn grain, and grain dust appears to be the cause of the fire. ?There was no danger of the ethanol being involved,? Kelley said.

Authorities said Wednesday the explosion that hit a liquefied natural gas storage facility in Eastern Washington earlier this week threw 250-pound pieces of steel up to 300 yards through the air.

Benton County sheriff?s Deputy Joe Lusignan said Wednesday that it was ?a little bit of a miracle? that no one was killed.

?It was an extremely powerful explosion, the initial explosion,? he said. ?Fortunately, we didn?t have any subsequent ones after that.?

The Monday blast inside a processing plant at the Williams Northwest Pipeline LNG storage facility outside Plymouth, Benton County, injured five people and left a big gash in the side of an LNG storage tank.

But a detailed assessment of the damage inside the processing plant will have to wait for a structural engineer to assure the building is safe to enter, Williams spokeswoman Michele Swaner said.

PERRY, Ohio (AP) - The operator of a northeast Ohio nuclear power plant says a refrigerant leaked from equipment in a building on the site, prompting air monitoring for the chemical.

A FirstEnergy Corp. spokeswoman tells The Plain Dealer (http://bit.ly/Po76wX">http://bit.ly/Po76wX ) an undetermined amount of the chemical escaped Wednesday as workers were starting routine maintenance at a facility near the reactor building at the Perry nuclear plant along Lake Erie. The leak occurred at a building that contains charcoal beds to absorb radioactive gases.

No one was hurt, but the building was deemed off-limits. Air monitors were called to check for trichloroethylene, a chemical from the refrigerant that can be a neurotoxin in high concentrations.

Such problems are required to be reported to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, Va. (WTVR) ? Eleven people were taken to the hospital after the wrong chemical was put in a tank at the Roanoke River Service Authority Water Treatment Works in Mecklenburg County.
The 11 people include seven firefighters, one rescue crew member, two employees at the plant and a delivery driver. Some of people were taken to the hospital because they inhaled chemical fumes, others as a precaution.
The HazMat incident has not affected the water supply in the county and the water is safe, authorities said.
A tanker truck driver offloading chemicals at the plant accidentally put the wrong chemical in the wrong tank, authorities told CBS 6 senior reporter Wayne Covil.
HazMat crews were called in to remove the chemical.
Sheriff?s deputies went door to door to tell people who live near the plant about the large number of fire and EMS crews in the area.

Residents in the St. Mary?s Hospital area of Kitchener were startled Wednesday afternoon by an explosion at a water treatment plant.
The explosion occurred shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday at 20 Greenbrook Drive.
Fire crews, including 15 firefighters and a hazmat team, responded to the scene moments later.

?There?s been some type of an explosion,? Kitchener Fire Chief Tim Beckett tells CTV News.
?Once they arrived, they found a strong chemical odour and some damage to the building.?
Officials believe the likely cause of the explosion was a delivery of ammonia accidentally being pumped into a chlorine tank.
?What we have been able to determine from the chemicals involved is (that) it doesn?t pose a health risk to the surrounding areas,? says Beckett.
