Assistant Vice President for Environmental Health &Safety
Position Description
Texas Tech University seeks an Assistant Vice President to direct the Department of Environmental Health & Safety and administer the university?s environmental health and safety programs.
Essential Functions
The Assistant Vice President will develop, implement, administer and monitor all environmental health and safety programs for the university and to work collaboratively with faculty, academic administrators and staff to develop and sustain a culture of safety. Programs are expected to be in compliance with all applicable federal, state and local statutes, regulations and ordinances; to establish institutionally approved prudent practices, procedures and standards; and to support academic excellence.
Specific examples of the position?s scope of work include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Develop a high-impact and metric-based safety program and ensure that it is communicated, embraced, and enforced. Participate in national activities that promote such programs.
• Promote a mentoring program that encourages faculty, student, and staff participation and facilitates open communication and a positive safety culture for the campus.
• Provide assistance and consultation to faculty, staff, and students in designing facilities and practices that meet safety and environmental requirements and promote environmentally responsible and safe practices.
• Participate in the university?s capital planning process to ensure that environmental, health and safety issues are properly identified, considered and addressed.
• Administer the department?s budget, consulting with university administration on major budgetary obligations associated with safety programs and compliance expectations or mandates.
• Be an active member of the Institutional Laboratory Safety Committee, Institutional Biosafety Committee, and Radiation/Laser Safety Committee. Serve on other University committees or task forces as assigned or requested.
• Serve as the university?s primary interface with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies including, but not limited to; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Agency, Department of Homeland Security, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, and Department of State Health Services.
Preferred Qualifications
• Terminal (MA, MS or MPH, PhD or equivalent) degree in an Environmental Health & Safety discipline or a science or engineering discipline. An applicant with appropriate credentials may be appointed as adjunct faculty and member of the graduate faculty by an academic department.
• Five (5) years of experience with responsibility for management and oversight of strong academic safety programs, hazardous materials disposal, chemical hygiene, biosafety, radiation safety, occupational health & safety, environmental protection, asbestos compliance, or other environmental health & safety activities.
• Demonstrated ability to work with campus stakeholders to accomplish academic and research missions.
• Demonstrated ability to manage and perform operational functions required for compliance with all applicable federal and state statutes and regulations, ordinances and control functions for environmental health and safety at a research university
• Demonstrated ability to develop professional skills of EH&S staff and to work cooperatively with faculty, academic administrators and staff to develop new programs consistent with the needs of the institution, including education, record keeping, public relations, and related functions.
• Demonstrated ability to work closely with local, state, and federal regulatory agencies, in addition to advisory boards, committees, and other policy formulating or recommending groups; evidence of positive performance with regard to responses to inquiries from these agencies.
• Possession of one or more of the following professional certifications:
- Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) ? American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH)
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) ? Board of Certified Safety Professionals
- Certified Health Physicist (CHP) ? American Board of Health Physics
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) ? Institute of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers
• Working knowledge and application of computer-based EH&S management systems.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Valid driver?s license.

• This is a Security Sensitive Level I Position: Applicants for this position will be subject to a police records check and may be required to be fingerprinted.
• Successful candidates must pass a criminal history/driving record background check prior to employment.
• Successful candidates must be eligible to successfully complete a security risk assessment conducted by the U.S. Attorney General/FBI in accordance with CDC/USDA Select Agent Regulations.
