TOXINS LEAK FROM SECOND PIPE AT NC COAL PLANT DUMP
Tags: us_NC, public, release, environmental, paints, waste
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? Waste water that contains toxic levels of arsenic, flowing from a coal plant ash dump, is now flowing into a North Carolina river that's already contaminated from a massive spill two weeks ago, authorities said Tuesday.
The state Department of Environment and Natural Resources ordered Duke Energy on Thursday to stop the waste water coming from a pipe running under a coal ash dump at its power plant. A nearby pipe at the dump collapsed without warning Feb. 2, coating the bottom of the Dan River with toxic ash as far as 70 miles downstream.
State regulators expressed concern the second pipe could fail, triggering a second spill. Water coming from the pipe contains arsenic at levels 14 times that considered safe for human contact.

WELDING ACCIDENT MAY HAVE SPARKED WEST BIRMINGHAM COMMERCIAL FIR

BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
A large commercial fire has been contained in west Birmingham, but crews will likely continue battling the blaze for another couple of hours, according to fire officials.
The two-alarm fire is at the ABM Auto Parts building near Lomb Avenue and 15th Street. The FOX6 Towercam on Red Mountain has captured large amounts of black smoke billowing over west Birmingham.
The black smoke is caused by burning 50 gallon oil drums, which are the biggest concern at this time, deputy battalion chief C.W. Mardis said. They are using foam to extinguish the burning oil.
Fire officials also believe propane and acetylene cylinders inside the building have exploded inside the building.
Six employees were inside the ABM Auto Parts building when the fire erupted around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and everyone was able to escape. No one was injured.

POOL CHEMICAL REACTS WITH ASPHALT, CAUSES CLOSING ON ULMERTON ROAD

A portion of Ulmerton Road was closed for over an hour Tuesday after an overturned bucket of pool chemical ate a hole in the asphalt.
Largo Fire Rescue Chief Kelly Callahan said a five gallon bucket of muriatic acid spilled its contents into the road about 7:40 a.m.. Firefighters aren't sure where the bucket came from, but say it could have fallen out of a vehicle of any size.
The acid mixed with the petroleum in the road and created a small amount of smoke, gas and heat to rise up. It also bubbled up the road's surface, firefighters said.
Ulmerton Road was closed for about 90 minutes between Belcher and Starkey roads Tuesday while fire rescue, hazardous materials and Department of Transportation teams cleaned the spill and checked the road's safety, Callahan said.

HAZMAT TEAM REMOVES MATERIAL FROM 2600 BLOCK OF AVENUE X
Tags: us_TX, public, release, response, waste
Lubbock?s Hazmat team removed a barrel of hazardous waste near the 2600 block of Avenue X on Monday afternoon.
No injuries have been reported from exposure to the material.
An on-site sample test showed that the 55-gallon drum of fluid contained a chemical commonly used in printing ink.
Municipal sanitation crews noticed the leaking barrel and hazmat was called to investigate.
Fire department officials said they suspect the barrel was left in the alley to avoid costs associated with the proper disposal of the material, but the investigation is ongoing.

STEAM SOURCE OF STRANGE ODOR AT MEDICAL FACILITY

Condensed steam from a piece of equipment created an odor that sparked an eight-hour investigation Monday at a Lancaster medical facility.
Fire units were called to the Surgery Center of Lancaster, 810 Plaza Blvd., around 6 a.m. after a female employee detected a strange smell and began to feel ill, according to Lancaster city fire Capt. David Longenecker.
....As the morning progressed, haz-mat crews entered the facility several times but equipment measured nothing toxic in the air.
....It was determined that condensed steam exhausted from an autoclave ? a device used to sterilize surgical utensils ? was the source of the unusual odor.
Longenecker said the smell mimicked that of several different hazardous materials.
"Ultimately, it's not unusual. But no one had smelled it before," he said.

Officials said nine people were assessed by fire crews and then decontaminated. Three of those were taken to a hospital, but their conditions are not serious or life-threatening.
