May I suggest a formal "fit for duty" clause in your policies and procedures. Perhaps one not so stringent as the Tennessee Valley Authority, but close to it if the lab includes: flammables, reactive chemicals, compressed gases, and the usually litany of incompatible chemicals. Please note, for most firms, arriving at the work site with the smell of alcohol on one's breath normally triggers a "reasonable suspicion" BAT.
Please let me know if you want a examples of "fit for duty" language.
