VIENNA ? Austrian hazmat specialists called in after Geiger counters showed alarmingly high readings for a dump truck arriving at an incinerator have found the problem ? radioactive adult diapers.
After unloading the truck, firefighters from the hazardous materials unit of the city of Linz found nearly two dozen diapers from a hospital that had become contaminated with radioactive iodine. The substance is swallowed during some medical and diagnostic procedures.
While radiation levels were substantially above normal, unit leader Dieter Jonas says no one was in danger during Tuesday's incident.
Austrian officials, however, are tracing the truck's route. And the truck will stay in a metal container at the incinerator for eight days ? the time it takes for the emissions to reach safe levels.

A large hazardous materials handling crew was summoned to Bailey Yard Monday after two chemicals were inadvertently mixed in a tank car.
U.P. spokesman Mark Davis said a contractor mistakenly added aluminum chloride to a rail car that contained coolant with a rust inhibitor for locomotive engines. The combination created a yellow vapor and sharp odor from the car, which was parked on a service track near the locomotive repair shop, commonly called the diesel shop.
Davis said Bailey Yard workers reported what looked like yellow smoke coming from the top of the container around 3:15 p.m., and smelled a odor that they suspected was chlorine gas.
A Hazardous Materials analyst was summoned who determined the cause. He called in Haz Mat trucks to pump out the liquid and haul it away.

COUNCIL BLUFFS ? A spark in a paint booth started a fire Tuesday at a Council Bluffs equipment company.
Shortly before 9 a.m., an employee at Midwestern Equipment, 1210 35th Ave., was painting equipment inside a booth designed to contain flammable vapors when a spark caused paint chemicals to catch fire, according to interim Council Bluffs Fire Marshal Curtis McKeon. The extinguishing system inside the booth was unable to squelch the blaze, and firefighters were called.
Fire crews had the fire contained within about 10 minutes.

Lexington Police Headquarters were briefly evacuated Tuesday morning after chemicals used for fire suppression were released into the air.
Fire officials said because of the cold temperatures, the heating system was turned up to a higher temperature in the Lexington Police Communications Center, causing dust in the duct work to float into the air.
That caused a smoke detector in the room to be activated, releasing the fire suppression chemical, halon, into the air. The chemical, which removes the oxygen from the room, is used in computers labs or records room and is an alternative to using water from sprinklers to put out a fire.
Dispatchers were able to quickly evacuate the room before the halon chemical was released. According to fire officials, an alarm sounds before the chemical is released and gives a 15- to 30-second warning for people inside the room to leave.

Farmers and oil drillers may be required to report their use of explosive chemicals under measures the Obama administration is considering to avoid disasters such as a Texas blast that killed 14 people last year.
Policy options from an inter-agency working group appointed in response to the fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas, in April were posted to the regulations.gov website today. Other rules under consideration would require the use of safer alternatives to explosive or toxic chemicals, which could require changes at refineries and plants.

Firefighters averted a chemical disaster after a school swimming pool complex was engulfed by 50ft flames on Friday night.
Just three metres away from the enormous blaze at the City of London Freemen's School, in Ashtead Park, there was a store containing gas cylinders and thousands of litres of a dangerous chemical used in the pool.
Firefighters used foam to cover the store, which contained sodium hypochlorite, preventing further damage to the school and people living nearby.
A fire investigation team is still looking into the cause of the blaze, which may have been an arson attack, according to a spokeswoman from Surrey Fire and Rescue.

Major fire broke out in two factories in Nalgonda and Mahabubnagar districts on Monday, leaving the employees and the people living in the vicinity on the edge. Fortunately, no one was injured in the two mishaps.
In Bibinagar in Nalgonda district, two hundred employees of the Sriram Labs Private Limited company at Bibinagar in Nalgonda district as well as several staff and students of some nearby schools had a providential escape on Monday when 12 chemical drums caught fire and led to the explosion of two reactors in the company.
According police, the company is engaged in manufacturing certain chemicals used in medicines. On Monday, while methanol was being unloaded from a tanker, a spark occurred which set afire 12 drums loaded with chemicals. This in turn blasted two reactors.
