A hazardous materials team was called out to Manchester Township High School early Thursday afternoon, after a beaker of unknown liquid shattered in a science lab, but no one was hurt and the school was quickly determined to be safe, police said.
A teacher working alone in a lab just before 1 p.m. accidentally dropped the beaker, which shattered and released fumes, police said, and administrators closed off both the classroom and the affected wing of the school as a precaution.
The Berkeley Township Hazardous Materials Emergency Response Team was called in to the school, police said, and determined both the classroom and school were safe following the incident.

An eastbound lane of Mitchell Highway in front of Orana Mall was shut for an hour yesterday as Dubbo Fire and Rescue and HAZMAT crews cleaned up 600 litres of molasses that had spilled from a truck.
A crack in a container spread a trail of the liquid cattle feed over a distance of almost a kilometre but the worst of it was in front of the shopping centre. DFR were called to the scene just after 1pm and began cleaning up the mess.
"We've had a spill of a liquid cattle feed known as Molafos [molasses]," DFR station officer Adam Wixx said.

SAPULPA -- A nitric acid-fueled fire at a Tulsa County chemical plant was extinguished shortly after 10 p.m., according to Sapulpa police.
Officials cleared the scene around midnight.
The fire, which reportedly began around 7:15 p.m. Thursday at Sulzer Chemtech, forced the evacuation of several motels and nearby businesses and residences as a southerly wind pushed potentially hazardous smoke into the area near New Sapulpa Road and the Turner Turnpike.
Sapulpa police blocked off the area for several hours as multiple agencies worked to put out the flames and dam up the nitric acid spill.

FIRE CAUSES TOXIC FUMES AT FACTORY

TOXIC fumes filled the air inside an Australian Country Spinners (ASC) storeroom on Wednesday, after a volatile chemical caught fire.
Country Fire Authority hazmat experts from across the North East rushed to the Wangaratta factory just after 5pm to contain the chemical reaction, after an ASC employee first spotted smoke coming from the pallet of chemicals.
....
The chemical, Thiourea Dioxide, is a solid but flammable chemical that is a risk of catching fire if exposed to moisture.
?It is unstable and is liable to spontaneous combustion, so it is a fairly volatile chemical,? Mr Stibilj said.

The U.S. EPA announced Dec. 19 the metal recycler AL Solutions will implement extensive, company-wide safeguards to prevent future accidental releases of hazardous chemicals from its facilities.
The agreement resolves the alleged Clean Air Act violations that stemmed from an explosion at the company's New Cumberland facility that killed three people.
AL Solutions recycles titanium and zirconium raw materials for use as alloying additives by aluminum producers.
Three employees who had been handling zirconium powder at the company's former plant in New Cumberland died in December 2010 after an explosion that may have been caused by an accidental release of the chemical.
Debris from the explosion destroyed the production area of the facility, and was scattered into area yards.
EPA Regional Administrator Shawn Garvin said EPA and OSHA worked together after the explosion to coordinate an investigation and to share information.

CSB REPORT ON CHEVRON REFINERY FIRE URGES NEW REGULATORY APPROACH

On Monday, the U.S. Chemical Safety & Hazard Investigation Board released its draft report on a 2012 Chevron refinery fire in Richmond, Calif. CSB recommended that the state switch from a ?current patchwork of largely reactive and activity-based regulations? to a performance-based system, the agency?s press release says.
CSB released an interim analysis and video of the incident earlier this year. The fire was caused by rupture of a pipe in a crude oil processing unit; the pipe was first identified as corroded in 2002 but was never replaced.
The regulatory approach CSB now recommends is called the ?safety case? system and is already used in the United Kingdom, Norway, and Australia. From CSB?s press release:

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Firefighters are making progress against a large industrial fire at a federal Superfund site in central Tennessee, an official said Thursday.
Tennessee Emergency Management Agency spokesman Jeremy Heidt said a crew of contractors for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency began efforts to put out the blaze in rural Hickman County at around midnight.
They were using bulldozers and trackhoes to push dirt onto the fire, which was about 65 percent contained by mid-morning. Heidt said they hoped to allow nearby residents to return to their homes later in the day. About 300 people were still under evacuation orders on Thursday morning and nearby schools remained closed.
The fire at Industrial Plastics Recycle, about 45 miles southwest of Nashville, has been burning since Wednesday morning. On Wednesday afternoon, firefighters had to stop trying to put out the blaze after they learned that two 1,000 gallon propane tanks were on the property. Heidt said on Thursday that at least one of the propane tanks had been moved out of the way, and both had been deemed to no longer be a hazard.

A 45-year-old San Benito man died Tuesday after an explosion at a GreenHunter Resources oil-field site in Moulton.
Jose Torres was pronounced dead at the scene, 526 S. Lavaca St., at 11:17 a.m. by Lavaca County Justice of the Peace Carol Renner.
Moulton Police Chief Mark Pritchard said Torres was inside a tanker-trailer holding down a piece of metal for a welder outside the trailer.
"Apparently, something inside the tanker reacted with the heat, causing an explosion," Pritchard said.
Torres was thrown about 75 feet from the trailer, the police chief said.

Elmira, NY (WENY) - We have a breaking news situation in Elmira right now. Police and fire crews are evacuating people near Sullivan Street after the company AIRGAS has reported a hydrogen leak.
Our reporter talked to Captain Bob Lutz from the Elmira Fire Department. He says, ?The good thing is it's cold out and it's leaking through only through the valve so it's isolated, so there's no problem with it exploding. We are here mitigate if need be, to put water on it if we have to.?
Roads are closed and could be closed into the evening.

BRANT, N.Y. (AP) ? State police say a mechanic for a western New York propane business is recovering from burns suffered in an explosion.
Troopers say they responded Tuesday afternoon to a 911 call reporting an explosion at Renaldo Sales and Service in the southern Erie county Town of Brant.
Police say 54-year-old Lawrence Szal of Eden was working on a propane delivery truck when residual fumes inside the tank ignited, causing the explosion. Co-workers were able to extinguish the fire while removing Szal and providing him treatment.
Troopers say he suffered burns to his face, hands and legs. Szal was treated at Lake Shore Hospital in Irving. Troopers say his injuries don't appear to be life-threatening.

A flash fire burned an employee this morning at a Lynn chemical plant that produces polymers and finishing compounds, Lynn police said.
Lynn firefighters responded to C.L. Hauthaway Corporation, at 638 Summer St., at about 11 a.m. to battle the fire.
The fire ignited when a 62-year-old employee was mixing chemicals in a large vat.
?Something caused the chemicals or the chemical vapors to flash,? said Lynn District Fire Chief Stephen Archer. ?We don?t know yet what exactly caused the flash.?
The man suffered burns on his face, arms, and hands, Archer said.
An automatic sprinkler system activated, dousing the blaze.
