We used and I recommend a quantity limit for hand carrying of bottles such as not more than two 1 gallon bottles in secondary containers. Some use enclosed containers in case of a trip the bottles will not escape the containment (possibly for acids especially). Following an accident just before I arrived in grad school decades ago, I have also insisted on the solvents/solutions in any two large bottles be compatible (i.e. Not resulting in a fire if both break together). The plastic coated bottles cost more, but have saved my colleagues on a few occasions.
Above a quantity limit, I also suggest a cart be required, good idea for the beavier bottles to be on a lower shelf to manage center of gravity. And PPE as well, of course.

Yes, they have to be in a secondary container. We use rubber ones that can hold up to 1 gal bottles, but I have seen plastic carriers for carrying multiple small bottles.
