Nearly 400 gallons of nitric acid seeped into the ground outside a florist?s greenhouse outside Salinas, CA, Wednesday, as the county HazMat Team jumped into action to assess the issue.
First responders received the call at 8:15 a.m. ? more than an hour after the Green Valley Floral on-site foreman discovered the leak emanating from a new stainless steel tank, said Sho Shinhira, site manager. The lag in dispatch time resulted from 30 minutes on hold with Basic Chemical Solutions? emergency line and an operator who was unsure if he should call 911, Shinhira said.

A section of Piedmont Virginia Community College was briefly evacuated Thursday morning following a small chemical spill.
Anita Showers, PVCC spokeswoman, said a science class in the technology wing of the college?s main campus had a minor spill.
She said the wing was evacuated and the fire department?s hazardous materials team was called. She said that as of late Thursday afternoon, the wing had re-opened except for the classroom where the spill happened, a physics lab.
Students who have class in that room will be relocated, Showers said. No other classrooms were affected, she said.
She said the college sent an email to students and faculty with information about the spill.

CHEMICAL IN FRIES, CHIPS AND COFFEE PROMPTS FDA ADVICE

Crispy French fries and crunchy potato chips were never health foods, what with all the calories, fat and salt. But consumers just got a reminder that there's one more thing to worry about when they indulge in such foods: a chemical called acrylamide that might cause cancer.
For more than a decade, scientists have known that acrylamide forms when potatoes, cereal grains and some other plant foods are browned through frying, baking or roasting. That means it shows up in fries, chips, breakfast cereals, toasted bread, cookies, crackers and even coffee. Studies show the chemical can cause cancer in rodents at high doses. In humans, the cancer risk remains unclear, but health agencies around the world are concerned and calling for more study.

BELOIT- The Janesville Fire Department, Beloit Fire Department, and Rock County Hazmat Team responded to an ammonia leak at Fairbanks Morse at 7011 White Avenue Beloit, Wisconsin.
An employee reports an ammonia alarm activated near an ammonia cylinder. Beloit Fire arrived at the scene and evacuated the building.
Hazmat technicians found a leak in a hose that directed ammonia into a piece of production equipment. Technicians located a tank attached to the piece of production equipment and quickly shut it off to stop the leak.
The scene was cleared and turned over to Fairbanks Morse staff, and the Hazmat team returned to Janesville.

An explosion at a Woodland home blew walls from their foundation and led to the arrest of a woman on drug-making charges.
Woodland police and firefighters were dispatched to 87 Utah Ave. about 7:30 p.m. Thursday to investigate a report of an explosion and fire. While the emergency personnel were en route, witnesses reported seeing several men running from the address, one of them on fire.
When firefighters arrived, they put out the fire, allowing officers to find a large amount of marijuana in the garage and a bedroom. In addition, butane containers and traces of concentrated cannabis were found near where the fire started.
Authorities say someone had been engaged in a chemical extraction process to make concentrated cannabis when the explosion occurred. The blast blew a garage door out, destroyed ceiling drywall and blew walls from their foundation and roof trusses.

Approximately 100 employees had to be evacuated from Xerox Research Center Webster Friday after a chemical spill inside one of its buildings.
A 55-gallon drum of the chemical, monochlorbenzene, spilled at approximately 1:30 p.m. in Building 218, according to Xerox spokesman Bill McKee. Monochlorbenzene is a Level 2 health risk and skin and eye irritant. It is considered flammable, but not a major hazard, he said.
A clean-up commenced and the Webster Fire Department said it was safe for employees to return to the building less than two hours later.

EARLY TESTING REVEALS HIGH TOXIC CHEMICAL LEVELS AT MALIBU HIGH SCHOOL

Preliminary testing at Malibu High School has uncovered toxic chemicals at levels that exceed regulatory limits, according to a statement released Friday by the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District.
The findings trigger what could be a "very large, very expensive" remediation plan in which the district will have to conduct additional testing and ultimately clean up the chemicals, district Supt. Sandra Lyon said. That potentially years-long process will be overseen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, she added.
Elevated levels of polychlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, were discovered in caulking around window sills in about four of 20 tested areas, Lyon said.
But the superintendent stressed there is "no acute health risk" associated with the findings and the campus is "completely habitable," according to EPA officials she has met with.

A 40-year-old Fayette County man committed ?suicide by chemical? on Friday near Willow Park in Mt. Pleasant Township, authorities said.
Westmoreland County Coroner Ken Bacha said the man used a chemical pesticide inside his vehicle to end his life. A passerby found him outside the car.
Bacha would not identify the chemical, describing it as a professional-grade pesticide used to kill rodents. Deputy Coroner Sean R. Hribal pronounced the man dead at the scene. The Tribune-Review does not identify suicide victims.

MERCURY SPILL IN STORAGE BUILDING CONTAINED

The Kenosha County Hazardous Materials Team responded to a mercury spill Friday afternoon inside a city of Kenosha storage facility.
Kenosha Fire Department Battalion Chief Matthew Haerter said there was no danger to the public, and the spill was confined to the interior of the building at 912 35th St.
Haerter was in command of the cleanup operation involving the Kenosha Fire Department and other units of the HazMat team from municipal fire departments in Bristol, Paris, Pleasant Prairie and Somers.
He estimated the mercury to be about a pint. When not contained, that is a significant amount for the heavy silvery-white metal, which remains liquid at room temperature.
Haerter said a box holding the material was dropped or fell from a stack inside the warehouse, causing the spill. The mercury was among items used by the city?s museums, and Haerter said staff alerted the fire department when the spill was noticed just after 3 p.m. on the concrete floor.
