LYONS ? The Boulder County Sheriff's Office is investigating two incidents of illegal chemical dumping in the flood zone near Lyons.

Authorities say someone dropped off a 30-gallon barrel containing zinc cyanide, an extremely poisonous chemical, at Black Bear Inn in Lyons on Nov. 7. The barrel was found next to flood debris.

Four days later, police say a similar discovery was made at an Environmental Protection Agency dump site. It was later determined the chemical inside the 20-gallon barrel was copper cyanide, which is also extremely toxic.

According to KUSA-TV (http://tinyurl.com/klgmpee">http://tinyurl.com/klgmpee ), investigators believe someone is dumping the toxic waste next to flood debris hoping no one will notice.

OKLAHOMA CITY - Firefighters have put out a fire burning in a drum filled with kerosene in the 1800 block of S.E. 40th Street.
The two-alarm fire started around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday at a commercial building. Because of the 2,500 gallons of burning kerosene, both firefighters and hazmat crews were called to the scene.

The fire was extinguished within an hour. The flames did not threaten the structure.

WAREHOUSE FLOOR COLLAPSES, TRIGGERS HAZMAT CALL

A heavy load of lead collapsed through the main floor of a west Vancouver warehouse Tuesday afternoon, creating a 50-foot hole. The lead fell onto some chemicals stored below, and a thick sheet of concrete wall was pulled down in the collapse, which was reported around 2 p.m.

Vancouver Warehouse and Distribution Co., 1101 W. 11th St., was condemned, and trains were not allowed to pass through the BNSF Railway at the rear of the warehouse, said Vancouver Fire Department Battalion Chief Rick Steele; officials feared the vibrations from passing trains could cause the building to collapse.

Battalion Chief Kevin Griffee said a worker with a forklift had unloaded pallets of lead ingots when the main floor of the building gave way. The worker had backed up the forklift before the collapse and was not injured. About 400,000 pounds of ingots dropped onto about 1,000 gallons of rubbing alcohol that was stored below in plastic containers. Griffee was not sure how much of the flammable liquid was released. One man was treated for chemical exposure.

The building was so unstable that some traffic on the adjacent BNSF Railway was halted.

SALINAS, Calif- The county HAZMAT team is at a greenhouse on Oldstage road after an acid spill happened Tuesday morning. The greenhouse belonged to the Oldstage Greenhouse company. Emergency crews have been on scene all morning working to clean up the spill.

Workers discovered that the 500 gallon tank of Nitric Acid was leaking. Experts on scene said that this acid can eat through almost anything and can cause severe damage to the skin and lungs.

Crews are working to clean up the spill and have set up decontamination stations.

At the moment, crews do not believe that this spill will spread to neighboring properties, but there could be problems if the wind intensifies. There is also a small chance that it could cause an explosion if the gas from the spill ignites, said emergency crews.

A sulfuric acid spill at a chemical company sickened 50 to 60 people in at least one and perhaps more businesses in Carson, Calif. Monday night, authorities said.

CBS Los Angeles station KCBS-TV reports workers from Brookville Industries complained of burning noses and throats, as Los Angeles County fire officials reported acid had spilled at a chemical company called Solvay.
Los Angeles County's Sheriff's Lt. April Tardy says 50-60 workers in all were treated for those symptoms as well as difficulty in breathing, nausea, and coughing. Ten were brought to hospitals but, she says, all were "fine."

Ambulances were on the scene. Workers were treated at curbside.
