CHICAGO (CBS) ? Rescue crews are on the scene of a possible chemical leak at a plant in far southwest suburban Elwood.

The incident occurred around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at Stepan Chemical Co., 22500 W Millsdale Road.

According to the Will County Emergency Management Agency, a relief valve opened up and a chemical called therminol was released in vapor form.

A total of 18 workers in the area were exposed and most used a decontamination shower to treat themselves. One person was taken to a hospital in Joliet.

Several ambulances and hazardous materials personnel were sent to the scene.

According to the company website, Stepan Company was founded in 1932 by Alfred C. Stepan Jr.

Headquartered in Northfield, Stepan manufactures basic and intermediate chemicals for a variety of food and pharmaceutical products.

TEXAS CITY ? Environmental activists and labor unions called Tuesday for tougher regulation of chemicals at a public hearing where industry representatives remained largely silent, watching and waiting.
Only a single speaker from a chemical company addressed the room during the first in a series of national ?listening sessions? planned as federal agencies seek input for policies upgrading regulations and data collection involving chemical safety and chemical security.
?The addition of yet another layer of regulation will do nothing to improve safety,? Edwin Cannon, a safety manager at Texas oil services firm Baker Hughes Inc., told the gathering.
His firm uses ammonium nitrate for explosives, already more heavily regulated than dangerous chemicals used for farming. ?Our safety record in the industry is extremely safe,? he later told The Dallas Morning News.
But President Barack Obama?s executive order directing agencies to begin the first major national chemical safety upgrade in a decade was largely prompted by the April disaster in the small farming town of West. There, ammonium nitrate used for fertilizer exploded, killing 15 people and injuring hundreds.
Environmentalists and unions at the meeting called on agencies to use existing laws to:
Create a federal mandate that companies use safer chemicals or chemical processes where they?re available.

One person is in critical condition after an explosion in a lab in Woburn at about 12:30 p.m., fire officials said.

State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan said the blast occurred in a building at 475 Wildwood St. shortly after noon today.

He said the person was airlifted to a hospital in Boston, suffering from burns.

The building is owned by Cummings Properties, and leased out to a ?handful of bussinesses,? said Dennis Clarke, president of the company. Clarke said the the person who suffered injuries from the explsosion was an employee at the company where the explosion occured.

The fire sparked by the explosion was knocked down and investigators from the fire marshal?s office and the Woburn Fire Department are looking into the cause.

Clarke said he was told the fire was small, and didn?t set off the water sprinklers.

Fears of a major chemical fire proved to be unfounded at St Andrews University on Monday morning.

Firefighters and police responded to a fire alarm in a fourth floor chemistry laboratory at the Purdie Building, North Haugh.

The laboratory was filled with smoke and the fire service treated it as a potential chemical incident.

A fire service spokeswoman confirmed later that investigations revealed there was no toxic hazard or explosion risk. The building was being ventilated. The source of the smoke was not yet known.

SERIOUS CHEMICAL SPILL CLOSES DOWN ELM ST. AREA IN AMESBURY

AMESBURY -- A serious chemical spill at Arc Technologies has shut down several roads in the area; firefighters say they are dealing with a dangerous chemical that can cause an explosion.

According to the Amesbury Fire Department, a 55-gallon drum of heptane was spilled within a contained room at the Chestnut Street company, which produces sophisticated microwave absorbing materials. The spill occurred at around 11 a.m.

About six residents who live nearby have been evacuated to the senior center. Also, kindergarten buses were delayed and rerouted around the area.

Heptane is a solvent commonly used in manufacturing processes. However it is extremely flammable, and a spill can result in an explosive fire if the fumes are set off by heat or electricity. The vapors can also cause health problems such as irritated skin and eyes.

Oct. 30--Portland fire crews were able to extinguish a stubborn fire in a hopper at Eastside Plating, 1200 Southeast Second Street Wednesday morning.

The company, according to its website does metal plating for "the high-tech, medical, dental, aerospace, and automotive industries."

Lt. Rich Chatman, a spokesman for the Portland Fire Bureau, said crews confined the fire to the hopper containing aluminum shavings.

Crews collected all available dry and carbon dioxide fire extinguishers to put the fire out rather than risk using water, which could make the situation worse, Chatman said.

Firefighters involved in fighting the fire had to be decontaminated because of their close contact with heated aluminum shavings and toxic gases.

Crews from the City of Portland's Bureau of Environmental Services were also called to monitor any runoff created by firefighters.

No one was injured in a fire that caused significant damage to a methane gas reclamation facility at a landfill in western Henrico County.
Henrico fire Capt. Daniel Rosenbaum said the fire was reported at 10:41 a.m. Wednesday at the county's landfill in the 10600 block of Ford Country Lane, just off Nuckols Road.
The first crews on scene found fire coming from three of the 12 generators at the facility. The fire, marked under control at 11:12 a.m., caused heavy damage to the generators and resulted in officials having to shut down the facility for an undetermined amount of time, Rosenbaum said.
The generators are part of a county-owned facility that is leased to Ingenco, which captures methane from the decomposition of garbage and uses it to run generators. The power from the generators, in turn, is sent to the Dominion Virginia Power grid as needed.
