Tonawanda News ? Payne Avenue was shut down in both directions between Walck and Ridge roads Thursday when police discovered three one-gallon bottles of muriatic acid ? also known as hydrochloric acid ? spilling into the street, North Tonawanda Fire Chief John Lapham said.

The bottles of industrial cleaner, which is used to clean concrete and pools, most likely fell off the back of a truck as it traveled down Payne Avenue around 2 p.m., Lapham said. Two bottles landed near the intersection with Ridge Road across from Memorial Pool and the third landed just north of Chipman Road.

Two fire engines, a rescue and a command vehicle responded to the scene, as well as a hazmat team.

Chemicals have leaked from a container on a ship anchored in Port Phillip Bay, and will be inspected by authorities before it is allowed to berth.

"The Port of Melbourne Corporation through the harbour master received an assurance from the master of the vessel that the leak, which I think is of a resin substance, had been contained," a port spokesman said.

"There is nothing spilling from the vessel.

"The vessel will be held at anchor, so it will not berth, and there will be an inspection undertaken by the appropriate authorities today," he said.

The discovery of a stash of chemical warfare agents preserved since World War II prompted the evacuation of the residents in the eastern German town of Leuna in Saxony-Anhalt, local media reports.

An unexploded smoke aerial bomb and six integrated paper cartridges, all manufactured in Germany, were found at the site. Residents in a radius of 300 meters have been evacuated.

An expert team from the nearby town of Halle has been called to the scene for the liquidation of chemical weapons.

The defusing of the WWII era weapons should be started after noon, said deputy mayor Volker Stein as cited by Mitteldeutsche Zeitung.

Health, safety and environmental organizations called Tuesday upon supporters to press the White House to impose new chemical regulations in the wake of April?s deadly fertilizer plant explosion in Texas.

The Coalition to Prevent Chemical Disasters, representing more than 100 groups, is looking to ramp up pressure as agencies finalize recommendations for stronger protections at plants cross the country.

President Obama in August issued an executive order, directing agencies to begin taking steps to shore up gaps in safety in response to the Texas blast, which obliterated portions of the town of West, and killed 15 people.

The Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Homeland Security and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration have until Halloween to identify measures to identify measures to improve safety.

An explosive chemical scare forced the mass evacuation of 5000 students from three buildings at the University of Technology, causing major road closures in inner-Sydney.

Emergency services crews were called to the Chippendale campus on Broadway after a triple zero call about the crystallising of picric acid, a highly explosive substance.

NSW Fire and Rescue ordered students out of three university towers and called the NSW bomb squad to help try and neutralise the substance.

BONO, Ark. (AP) ? Two teenagers working as volunteers at a northeast Arkansas haunted house suffered severe burns when another worker poured paint thinner into a burning barrel, causing it to burst into flames, authorities said.

The fire broke out late Saturday at Nightmare Productions Haunted House on U.S. 63 between Jonesboro and Bono. The haunted house's owner, Cody Russell, said they don't yet know why the worker poured the chemical into the barrel but said he's since been dismissed from the company.

"The only thing I could figure is they were trying to get a fire started because it was cold," Russell said. "It was a bad judgment call."

A major fire broke out in a laboratory of Virar?s ViVa college on Tuesday morning, sparking panic among students who were taking an exam at the time. The building was evacuated after the blaze erupted around 8.30 am. Some of the students slipped on the staircase amid the mad rush, but no one was seriously injured.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, but authorities suspect that an overheated battery in the electronic lab may have triggered it. The Vasai-Virar fire brigade criticised the college, founded by four-time MLA Hitendra Thakur, for failing to put in place basic fire-safety equipment.

Late on Tuesday night, a minor fire was reported in a Dadar high-rise on Senapati Bapat Marg. The fire brigade arrived at the commercial building, Ruby Tower, minutes after they received the call at 10.30 pm. No one was injured in the incident.

?A small fire broke out in a dustbin kept on the eighth floor. There was a lot of smoke, which caused panic,? a fire official said.

BEDFORD HILLS ? A cracked drum leaking acetone inside a tractor-trailer closed the Bedford Hills rest area on southbound Interstate 684 Tuesday morning for about 90 minutes, state police said.

The spill inside the Clean Harbors National Transportation truck prompted the driver to pull into the rest area around 11 a.m.

A Westchester County hazardous materials team, Bedford Hills firefighters and state police responded to the rest area. A Clean Harbors team eventually took care of the problem, police said.

Acetone is a solvent. It is often used to make other chemicals and is also part of common products like paint and nail polish remover.

A state police spokesman said the leak consisted of a ?minimal amount? and there was never any danger to motorists.

SAN DIEGO - A spill of hazardous waste in a storage area at a Carlsbad contact lens manufacturing firm sent noxious fumes through the area Tuesday afternoon and forced evacuations at the business.

The noninjury accident at the SynergEyes complex in the 2200 block of Rutherford Road was reported shortly after 4 p.m., according to police.

Initial reports indicated that it was a possible chemical spill. Some witnesses told authorities they saw vapors coming from under a door.

By the time emergency crews arrived, the management of the company had cleared all workers from the buildings, Lt. Peter Pascual said. No other evacuations were necessary, Pascual said.

A county hazardous-materials team was dispatched to deal with the waste, the nature of which was not immediately clear.
