SAN DIEGO - A spill of hazardous waste in a storage area at a Carlsbad contact lens manufacturing firm sent noxious fumes through the area Tuesday afternoon and forced evacuations at the business.

The noninjury accident at the SynergEyes complex in the 2200 block of Rutherford Road was reported shortly after 4 p.m., according to police.

Initial reports indicated that it was a possible chemical spill. Some witnesses told authorities they saw vapors coming from under a door.

By the time emergency crews arrived, the management of the company had cleared all workers from the buildings, Lt. Peter Pascual said. No other evacuations were necessary, Pascual said.

A county hazardous-materials team was dispatched to deal with the waste, the nature of which was not immediately clear.

UPDATE: MIXED CHEMICALS CAUSE REACTION AT GREEN BAY FACILITY

Green Bay - Mixed chemicals caused a reaction at a Green Bay company, Carboline, Monday morning, prompting a large response from area fire crews and the Hazmat team.

A Carboline spokesman said workers at the plant noticed a chemical reaction taking place and followed protocol to handle it. They placed the batch of mixture they were making into six 55 gallon drums and moved them outside. The spokesman said that moving the drums outside would isolate the reaction from other chemicals in the plant.

Once outside some of the barrels gave off visible fumes. Employees were evacuated and neighbors were told to stay indoors because of the fumes. Fire crew responded to the reaction and used water to cool it.

BRANCHBURG ‰??ĺ?ĺ? A fire at a chemical facility caused a precautionary evacuation of the building but was quickly extinguished, according to a company executive.

At about 3:50 p.m. on Monday, a fire ignited on the roof of a warehouse at the Voltaix electronic chemicals facility at 197 Meister Avenue, according to Mark A. Wilkinson, executive vice president of operations and technology for Voltaix.

"There were no injuries, no damage to the facility, but there was a precautionary evacuation," Wilkinson said. "A small amount of flammable material burned, but we always do a thorough investigation on anything unexpected."

"The fire was the result of a chemical release (Disilane) that is air-reactive and automatically lights on fire when it is exposed to air," North Branch Fire Chief David Hickson said. "Working with Voltaix employees, we were able to stop the release of the chemical and extinguish any fire that remained after containing the release."

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -
Employees in the south plant of the MeadWestvaco Specialty Chemicals plant returned to work several hours after a chemical leak and fire, according Stephanie Mangini, Director of Communications & Brand Management.
....
The MWV release also stated the fire started at 5:45 p.m. when a leak happened during routine maintenance at the refinery, and the fire was contained by 6 p.m.

Shortly after the fire was contained crews began work to safely shutdown the refinery, according to the release.

An eyewitness said, "I heard a bunch of sirens and decided to come see what was going on and I looked over here to the plant, saw a big fire ball coming up over here."

More than 10 fire trucks from at least 3 agencies were lined up along Mill Road off of Virginia Avenue in North Charleston.

The chemical plant is used to turn rosins that come from the paper making process into a number of products, including those used in the oilfield drilling market and fire logs.

UPDATED 3:13PM | Shortly before 3PM, Long Beach fire crews gave an all-clear of the structure, but the source of the odor was not found, according to Edison.

ORIGINAL 1:39PM | Noxious fumes inside of the Southern California Edison building in the East Village Arts District sent six people to the hospital and prompted a mid-day evacuation of the structure Monday.

A "strong odor" was reported around 11:50AM by employees who work inside Edison's call center and regional office located at 125 Elm Ave. According to Long Beach Fire Department officials, several complained of nausea and vomiting, prompting an evacuation of around 300 employees to an adjacent staging area.

26 persons were evaluated by responding paramedics and six were transported to local hospitals with non-critical symptoms including dizziness, weakness and nausea. The other 20 either denied care or were determined to not need it.

RAND, W.Va. --Kanawha County sheriff's deputies have issued warrants for two people after an apparent methamphetamine lab fire that started in a Rand apartment building on Monday.

Gregory William Young, 31, and Maria Rosalyn Young, 28, are both charged with operating a clandestine laboratory, Kanawha Sheriff's Cpl. Brian Humphreys said in a news release.

The couple was making meth inside their apartment at 5802 Starling Drive in Rand at about 8:45 p.m. when the fire began, he said. Deputies later determined that the meth lab started the fire. Paramedics took the couple to a nearby hospital for injuries sustained during the blaze. They will be arrested when they are released.

CALEDONIA, Minn. (FOX 47) -- Houston County officials say a man was severely burned after a meth lab exploded over the weekend.

The explosion happened Sunday, Oct. 20 at about 3:30 p.m.

The Houston County Sheriff's office got a tip from a caller about a meth lab explosion in rural Houston County. The caller indicated that a 50-year-old man was severely burned during the explosion and was seeking medical treatment in La Crosse. Officials learned later that the man had to be transported to a burn center for treatment.

According to Houston County Sheriff Doug Ely, a meth lab was found in the building on the property. Ely said they believe only the man injured was involved.

Smoke poured from drums of epoxy paint outside a business on Green Bay's east side on Monday morning, prompting closure of some nearby streets.

Smoke was coming from containers about 20 feet from the Carboline Co. building at 614 Elizabeth St., police Lt. Paul Lewis said.

Green Bay Metro Fire Department officials characterized it as a ‰??hazardous materials-type incident‰?? and said epoxy paint was involved. Firefighters used at least four hoses and an aerial truck to soak an area north of the Carboline Co. building.

Lewis said it was not immediately clear what was causing the problem, but that police had been told that the material could be ‰??highly flammable.‰??

It was December 2002, when a disaster struck the village of Holley in Orleans County.
"There was an explosion. The Diaz Chemical Company claimed to be a pharmaceutical company, they were not they did very dangerous work," said Andrew Saul, a plaintiff.
As a chemistry teacher Andrew Saul knows a thing or two about chemicals.
Saul said Diaz bromated hydrocarbons which created a deadly gas.
In 2002, he lived a block and a half away from the plant.
"Chemicals spattered over several streets in Holley and they could smell it in Hilton," said Saul.
No one died but many have claimed breathing problems and cancer following the spill.
Now more than a decade later, the company has settled.
"In the end individual citizens stood up and said no," said Saul.
After legal fees just more than 100 plaintiffs are splitting about $139,000.
"Glad it's over we hoped for more but there's not much you can do about it," said Jerry Baron, a plaintiff.
Jerry Baron and her sister Ellen Germeo are both in their 80's and still live in their home which is yards from the former plant.
"It should have never have been in the village," said Baron.
They will each get about 11-hundred dollars a piece.
To this day they live with breathing problems and a purifier only does so much.

An explosion at a backyard hash oil laboratory on Yolanda Avenue left a 10-foot area scorched black and led police to more than 100 pounds of marijuana in the house Friday, Santa Rosa police said.

Police were concerned that one or more of the people involved in the operation may have been seriously hurt in the blast and fled the scene, Sgt. John Cregan said in a press release.
....
The hash oil lab included multiple burners attached to butane bottles, Cregan said. The blast destroyed a canopy covering the lab, scorched two outbuildings in the yard and left shards of broken glass scattered around the yard.
