HASH OIL LAB EXPLODES IN SANTA ROSA

An explosion at a backyard hash oil laboratory on Yolanda Avenue left a 10-foot area scorched black and led police to more than 100 pounds of marijuana in the house Friday, Santa Rosa police said.
Police were concerned that one or more of the people involved in the operation may have been seriously hurt in the blast and fled the scene, Sgt. John Cregan said in a press release.

The hash oil lab included multiple burners attached to butane bottles, Cregan said. The blast destroyed a canopy covering the lab, scorched two outbuildings in the yard and left shards of broken glass scattered around the yard.

Update 10 p.m.: FAIRFIELD, Conn. - A call from a Bronson Road resident about a possible break-in at his home Tuesday afternoon turned into an all-night chemical and weapon cleanup, Fairfield police and fire officials said.
The evening of closed roads, chemical investigations and calls for evacuations began when the 65-year-old man homeowner at 1625 Bronson Road called police at 4:20 p.m. Tuesday because he thought someone was breaking into his house, police said.
When officers arrived, he was taken to the hospital after a conversation with officers indicated he was confused, police said. Responding officers discovered the multiple unidentified chemicals after detecting an odor, and the homeowner admitted that chemicals were in the house, police said.

TRAIN CARRYING OIL, GAS DERAILS WEST OF EDMONTON

GAINFORD, Alberta (AP) ? Firefighters battling a major blaze after a Canadian National tanker train derailed west of Edmonton, Alberta, on Saturday have decided to withdraw and wait for the flames to burn themselves out. No injuries to people or livestock have been reported.
The latest derailment has raised more questions about rail safety that became a major issue after a runaway oil train derailed in a Quebec town in July, triggering explosions that killed 47 people.
Canadian National spokesman Louis-Antoine Paquin said 13 cars ? four carrying petroleum crude oil and nine loaded with liquified petroleum gas ? came off the tracks around 1 a.m. local time in the hamlet of Gainford, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Edmonton. Three cars began leaking and caught fire.
With no further explosions expected from the 13 cars, withdrawing the firefighters is the safest thing to do, said Parkland County fire chief Jim Phelan. Parkland County includes Gainford.
"This fire needs to be extinguished by consuming the product," Phelan said.

CHEMICAL SPILL TE RAPA ROAD

Motorists were stuck in traffic after a glue spill closed part of Te Rapa Rd today.
A truck carrying PVA glue lost part of its load on the corner of Te Rapa Rd and Machester Place, outside the New World supermarket about 11.30am.
Police and the fire service were called to the scene to deal with the mess.
Several cars were damaged by the glue.
One northbound lane was been closed and traffic diverted into Pukete Rd. Motorists are advised to avoid the area.
There are no reports of injuries.

COUNTRIES INK MERCURY PACT

More than 90 countries signed a new treaty in mid-October to reduce global mercury pollution. Named the Minamata Convention on Mercury after a Japanese city that suffered one of the world?s worst cases of industrial mercury poisoning, the pact was completed in January (C&EN, Jan. 28, page 8). Signatories of the deal include Canada, Mexico, China, and the European Union. The U.S., which was embroiled in a government shutdown, did not sign then but is likely to do so. The treaty gives wide discretion to individual countries to come up with their own approaches to cutting releases of the toxic metal, says Baskut Tuncak, staff attorney for the Center for International Environmental Law. He warns that the pact lacks targets or deadlines for curbing the two largest sources of mercury pollution: gold-mining operations and coal-fired power plants. In conjunction with signing the convention, the World Health Organization and the nonprofit Health Care Without Harm launched an init!
iative to remove mercury from all medical measuring equipment, including thermometers and blood pressure devices, worldwide by 2020.

A highly toxic cloud of cancer-causing chemicals moves into neighborhoods where local residents live and work. People are sent to the hospital in droves. More have to evacuate their homes. Parents are told not to let their children out of the house to go to school. Businesses are shut down.
It may sound like a bad Hollywood movie, but this worst-case scenario happened last November in Paulsboro, when a train carrying more than 12 tons of vinyl chloride derailed and spilled its hazardous load. The full impact of the exposure people suffered may not be known for years.
What we do know is that in the State of New Jersey, there are 90 facilities with large enough amounts of highly hazardous chemicals to cause similar ? or worse ? disasters to the one that occurred in Paulsboro. All it would take would be a major toxic release, superstorm or terrorist attack to put millions of people in danger in southern New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

JOHNSON CONTROLS CHEM SPILL CONTAINED

HOLLAND, Mich. (WOOD) - A chemical spill that prompted an evacuation at Johnson Controls has been contained Saturday morning.
Hazmat crews and officials with the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department were called to Johnson Controls after a report of a chemical leak just before 1 a.m.
Dispatchers told 24 Hour News 8 that employees were evacuated from the building, located at 70 W. 48th Street in Holland. We're told up to 30 gallons may have been leaked.
Officials say no one was hurt.
Johnson Controls provides services to optimize energy of acid-automotive batteries and advanced batteries for hybrid and electric cars.

Authorities have set up a perimeter along a major highway after a train derailment caused a chemical spill in Fort Frances, Ont.
Ontario Provincial Police say a single rail car from the Minnesota Dakota and Western Railway tipped over on the property of the Resolute Forest Products paper mill at 1:13 p.m., spilling hydrogen peroxide. The OPP said no injuries have been reported.
Authorities have set up a perimeter around the affected area of Central Avenue (Highway 11/71) between Scott Street and Second Street. They are asking the public to refrain from entering the area.

TREATMENT CHEMICAL TURNS KENNEWICK WATER PINK

The drinking water in Kennewick turned pink Friday because a stuck valve at the water plant released too much of a chemical.
Utility Service manager Gary Deardorff told KONA (kona.com) that the amount released is harmless. The chemical, sodium permanganate, is used to take sulfur odors out of the drinking water.
Deardoff says the system is being flushed and the discoloration should be gone by later Friday afternoon.
