Six months ago this week, 15 Americans were killed and 200 injured in a fertilizer plant explosion in West, Texas. The tragedy highlighted much of the chemical industry's repeated failure to minimize and safely store toxic materials, and our government's failure to create comprehensive but fair rules to protect against such incidents.
According to a national poll (pdf) released this week, a majority of Americans agree that the federal government should require chemical facilities to use safer chemicals and processes to prevent these kinds of disasters.
As a 35-year citizen-soldier of the US army and the army national guard, I strongly agree with my fellow Americans. I had the honor and privilege of helping protect the people of the US, both overseas and here at home. The safety and security of our citizens has been the number one priority, whether the threat was from those who might do us harm or as a result of the devastation and suffering caused by natural disasters such as earthquakes or hurricanes. However, for decades, our country has failed to fix the security problem unsecured chemical facilities present, and it's a problem that puts millions of our citizens at risk.
Remarkably, the 17 April Texas explosion was not an isolated occurrence. Since then, there have been at least 10 serious chemical accidents (pdf) in the US, some of which caused deaths and injuries.

A major fire broke out at a chemical storehouse at Gnanavel Colony First Street near Mariamman Teppakulam here on Monday night.
An eyewitness said the fire broke out around 8 p.m. on the ground floor of the building, where chemicals used to manufacture soaps and detergents were stored. The flames soon spread to the first floor, damaging the electric wires on the pole adjacent to the building, triggering panic in the residential area.
Alerted by the local people, police rushed to the spot and called fire tenders. Four fire tenders from Anupanadi, Periyar bus stand and Tallakulam arrived at the spot and put out the fire in an hour, said Ramani, Inspector of Police, Teppakulam. ?The high compound wall around the storehouse prevented the fire from spreading to other places,? he added.

A World War II-era first-aid kit bought at an estate sale led to a huge hazardous material response Monday for one Camarillo family.
....
The Ventura County Fire Department responded to a home in the 100 block of Calle Vista about 10:35 a.m. An Oxnard Fire Department hazardous materials team and the Ventura County sheriff?s bomb squad also assisted because of the potential for more exposure and explosion.
Authorities removed the kit from the house and got rid of it safely.
Jody Williams and her family bought the Girl Scouts first-aid kit for $5 at a multi-estate sale Saturday in Ojai and later put it up for sale on eBay.
....
Williams learned the kit contained gauze pads soaked in medical-grade picric acid, an antiseptic that over time can crystallize, spark and create an explosion. She likened it to Pop Rocks.

BUTTE - A chemical spill in a lab room on the campus of Montana Tech in Butte forced the administration to call for a HazMat crew to respond to the university on Monday afternoon.
A HazMat crew from Helena was called out to Main Hall on the campus after university staff noticed Monday morning that a cabinet containing various bottled chemicals had crashed to the floor and spilled some of the chemicals.
Montana Tech's Director of Environmental Health and Safety, Marilyn Cameron, said there is no immediate danger to the public.
"Fortunately it didn't turn out to be as bad as we anticipated, but there are spilled chemicals and they are cleaning them up for us," Cameron said.
The university reported the chemicals weren't toxic Monday evening, but officials haven't determined what caused the cabinets to fall. The campus wasn't evacuated and classes will continue as usual.

Thirty five people were injured in an explosion at a pharmaceutical laboratory in Middelburg, Eastern Cape police said on Monday.
"[The] people were treated for injuries [burn wounds] at the Wilhelm Stahl Hospital," said Captain Stefanie Smith.
It was believed an explosion at Rolfe Laboratories sparked a fire that resulted in the evacuation of the building.
She said rescuers were searching a part of the building that was badly damaged for people who might be trapped.
"A head-count is still in process by the company to determine who was on duty at the time of the explosion and to determine the casualties."
Police were investigating a case of arson. The estimated damage had not yet been determined.

DRY ICE EXPLOSION AT LAX TERMINAL DELAYS FLIGHTS

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Authorities say a plastic bottle containing dry ice exploded at Los Angeles International Airport and caused a commotion that delayed a few flights.
FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller says a chemical reaction led to the blast Sunday evening in an employee bathroom in Terminal 2.
No injuries were reported, but as a precaution authorities closed the terminal and examined the area for evidence.
Eimiller said the bathroom was in a restricted area of the terminal that was not accessible to the public.
Airport police Sgt. Karla Ortiz said officials temporarily halted security screening, which led to the delay of up to four departing flights.
Investigators were trying to determine how the bottle wound up in the bathroom.
