SALINAS, Calif.- Three difficult factories including Taylor Farms, Mann Packing Plant and the Green Giant Fresh Factory have been closed down and evacuated Sunday after Salinas Fire officials say there was an ammonia leak inside the Green Giant Fresh Factory's compression building.

Right now the Green Giant Fresh factory has thousands of pounds of ammonia leaking into the building and several streets are officially shut down in the area because of the possible leak.

Hansen Street from Harkens Road to Airport is blocked off right now so there could be some traffic build up in the area.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -
Hazmat crews were on the scene of a chemical explosion in Scottsdale where one person was seriously burned.

After a chemical explosion set off, a hazmat team was called to clear the house.

The man behind the explosion was badly injured.

"He came out and he said. 'Mom I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry. I'm bleeding," said Nancy, the injured man's mother. She only wanted her first name published.

It sound like the making of some illegal activity, but the family insists it's not.

"No meth lab, no," said Nancy.

The mother of the man behind the explosion says her son was just cooking up a chemical mixture for fireworks and that it's legal.

"There was no foul play, no arrest, no handcuffs, nothing like that," said Nancy.

Oil and gas companies are being told for the first time to give county officials and local fire departments information about the toxic chemicals drillers use to fracture shale.

Ohio officials sent a memo this month notifying companies that a federal right-to-know law trumps a 2001 state law that allowed them to send the information exclusively to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources.

The memo ?puts oil and gas companies on notice that they will have to comply with the federal requirements,? said Chris Abbruzzese, a spokesman for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

SEATTLE ? A man suffered burns to his arm Friday morning at the University of Washington when a 2-liter beaker of Hydrochloric Acid broke.

According to the Seattle Fire department, a lab tech in his 20s suffered first-degree burns on his arm when the bottle of acid broke in the 600 block of NE Northlake Place at a UW lab. No other injuries were reported.

The fifth floor of the lab was evacuated and Seattle HazMat crews were called in to clean up the spill. The floor was slated to remain closed while crews worked to cleanup the spill.

SALT LAKE CITY ? Hazmat crews and paramedics responded to a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints administration building Thursday where workers mixed chemicals that produced toxic fumes.
Authorities said three people reportedly inhaled the fumes and went down. Those impacted were taken from the area safely, and one of them went to a hospital in a private vehicle.
Officials said the victim went to the hospital as a precautionary measure, and the victim was not accompanied by paramedics.
Fire department officials said some kind of acid was being mixed in a fifth-floor men?s restroom at an administration building owned by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Two firefighters in protective suits were sent into the restroom with monitoring equipment to determine if toxic fumes were still present.
Officials said this is an isolated incident and the fumes are not spreading. FOX 13 News will have more information as it becomes available.

People living close to the scene of a chemical explosion in Essex were urged to stay indoors as e mergency crews tackled a caustic soda leak following a blast at a chemical plant.

One employee received a minor injury in the explosion at Industrial Chemicals Ltd, in West Thurrock at around 8pm on Thursday.

Essex Police asked residents to stay inside their homes and keep their windows and doors closed following reports of "a strong chlorine smell in the area".

Safety experts later declared the blast site safe and said there was no longer any danger to the public.

Divisional officer Neil Fenwick of Essex County Fire and Rescue Service said: " We have had assurances from chemical experts on site that there is no risk to the public.

"A small tank of diluted caustic soda exploded and the contents drained away into an interception tank and was contained on site."

GIVING SCREENING THE GREEN LIGHT

A growing number of chemists are turning to toxicological tools to screen for potential environmental and health hazards during the early stages of chemical design. Their work comes under the fourth of the 12 principles of green chemistry: designing safer chemicals. This principle is the ?most scientifically exciting, the most practically applicable for industry and the most urgent for human health and the environment?, says Paul Anastas. He is director of Yale University?s Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering and came up with the principles in 1998 together with John Warner, then at the University of Massachusetts in the US.
Last year, Anastas? brother Nick, at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), coined the phrase ?green toxicology? to bridge the gap between toxicology and sustainable molecular design.1 ?It focuses on a particular application of the principles of toxicology to address certain problems, in this case, articulating design rules that can be used by synthetic chemistry to design products and reduce hazard,? he explains.

GEISMAR, LA (WAFB) -
A chemical leak at Rubicon in Geismar was quickly contained Tuesday morning.

Plant staff said Rubicon's parent company is called Huntsman.
