GIVING SCREENING THE GREEN LIGHT

A growing number of chemists are turning to toxicological tools to screen for potential environmental and health hazards during the early stages of chemical design. Their work comes under the fourth of the 12 principles of green chemistry: designing safer chemicals. This principle is the ?most scientifically exciting, the most practically applicable for industry and the most urgent for human health and the environment?, says Paul Anastas. He is director of Yale University?s Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering and came up with the principles in 1998 together with John Warner, then at the University of Massachusetts in the US.
Last year, Anastas? brother Nick, at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), coined the phrase ?green toxicology? to bridge the gap between toxicology and sustainable molecular design.1 ?It focuses on a particular application of the principles of toxicology to address certain problems, in this case, articulating design rules that can be used by synthetic chemistry to design products and reduce hazard,? he explains.

GEISMAR, LA (WAFB) -
A chemical leak at Rubicon in Geismar was quickly contained Tuesday morning.
Plant staff said Rubicon's parent company is called Huntsman.
Ascension Parish OEP reported a relief valve opened and released aniline a little after 7 a.m.
Officials said it was contained to the unit at the plant and a shelter in place was ordered as standard procedure.

CHEMICAL LEAK CAUSES VAPOR CLOUD IN YORK COUNTY

GLEN ROCK, Pa. (WHTM) - A chemical reaction and leak sent one person to the hospital and forced the evacuation of a York County business Monday morning.
Fire officials said around 5:45 a.m., two chemicals reacted inside the Bimax, Inc., plant on Industrial Road in Springfield Township. The reaction inside a metal drum caused the drum to strain and leak fluid, releasing a vapor cloud.
That vapor cloud was described by first responders as non-threatening, although a nearby truck driver who inhaled a large amount of the vapor was taken to the hospital after complaining of an upset stomach.
The vapor could be smelled as far away as Shrewsbury.

Hazmat crews responded to City Creek mall Thursday night after a janitor accidently mixed two incompatible chemicals.
The janitor was working in an upper floor bathroom at 8:24 p.m. when he mixed the chemicals and inhaled the resulting fumes, according to Salt Lake City Fire spokesman Jasen Asay. The man was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure, Asay added, though he was expected to be fine.

ONE INJURED IN MANASSAS HYDROGEN EXPLOSION AT UTRON

A hydrogen tank detonated Monday and injured one person at a Manassas weapons manufacturer, according to Prince William County fire and rescue officials.
An air pressure vessel shot up though the roof of the building, which is near George Mason University?s Manassas campus and the county?s governor?s school, shortly before noon. The vessel then dropped back into the UTRON building at 9441 Innovation Dr. UTRON?s Web site describes research on site into high-velocity gun launch technologies for military clients.
Patty Prince, a city of Manassas spokeswoman, said the injury has been described as minor.
HAZMAT teams were investigating and other experts were evaluating whether the building was structurally sound after the explosion, said Kim Hylander of the fire and rescue department.

DETROIT (WXYZ) - Detroit Police and Detroit Fire are responding to a massive fire and HAZMAT situation at a vacant building on the city's west side.

The building is located near Pittsburg and Martin, north of I-94. Police are shutting down Wagner Street to keep traffic away from the area.
Residents in the area are asked to close their doors and windows. Thick smoke can be seen pouring toward nearby homes.
There have been no evacuations at this time and no one has been hurt.
While neighbors wonder exactly what happened, Paul Krystyniak says he knows what was in this building before the fire, and has pictures to prove it.
?There were hundreds of boxes marked hazardous waste. So we took pictures," said Krystyniak.

Hazmat crews evacuated part of Baylor Hospital in Grapevine after several employees started feeling sick on Thursday afternoon.
The Grapevine Fire Department says people working on the third floor of the hospital's new patient tower all of a sudden felt faint and dizzy.
Hazmat crews evacuated employees and patients on the floor, but no one got seriously sick.
Grapevine Fire's deputy chief said the investigation continues into a potential cause, but they have not found any hazardous material or suspicious substance.

Columbia, SC (WLTX) - DHEC says it has an open and ongoing criminal investigation after high concentrations of a cancer causing chemical were found inside the grease trap of a Midlands restaurant.
DHEC issued an emergency regulation that impacts waste water plants after the discovery of cancer causing Polychlorinated Buphenyls was made September 13. Previous Coverage: DHEC Finds PCBSs in Richland County
The discovery was made during a routine inspection of a grease trap at the McCalisters Deli on Sparkleberry Lane.
Inspectors said that when grease was being removed from the trap, they noticed a dark liquid like motor oil. A call was made to DHEC who found high levels of the industrial lubricant outlawed in the United States in 1979.
DHEC believes someone illegally dumped the chemical in the restaurant grease trap.
"Really nasty stuff," said Congaree River Keeper Bill Stangler. "It's a known carcinogen. It causes cancer. It has a really long life. It doesn't break down in the environment quickly."

The release of a huge cloud of chemical smoke from a fertiliser warehouse fire has caused jitters in a southern Brazilian town amid fears that it might be toxic.
The blaze erupted late on Tuesday at a fertiliser depot in the town of Sao Francisco do Sul, causing panic and forcing the evacuation of 800 people.
Local press reports said more than 100 people fell ill and were treated at health centres.
'We said all along that people should not be exposed to this toxic smoke. The population must be protected,' Marlene Zannin of Santa Catarina state's Center of Toxicological Information told Globo television.

AN explosion at a chemical factory in Thurrock has left two people with minor injuries.
Firefighters were called to Industrial Chemicals Limited on Stoneness Road, West Thurrock following reports of a large explosion on site shortly after 8pm last night (Thursday, 26 September).
Crews found the explosion of a chemical within the chlorine scrubbing unit, causing a leak of caustic soda liquid.
Divisional Officer Neil Fenwick reassured the public they were not at risk from the incident, although Essex Police initially warned residents in the surrounding area to stay indoors.
"We have had assurances from chemical experts on site that there is no risk to the public.
"A small tank of diluted caustic soda exploded and the contents drained away into an interception tank and was contained on site."

In a single reaction, synthetic chemists sometimes can run through hundreds of liters of water, possibly without realizing it. The culprit is their solvent condenser, a piece of glassware that uses flowing water to cool solvents refluxing in a reaction vessel. Now two groups of chemists have invented condensers that use little or no water to condense boiling solvents.
A typical condenser consists of a glass tube nested within another. Water flows between these two tubes. A chemist attaches the condenser to the top of a flask so that as refluxing solvent evaporates and travels up through the center tube, the flowing water cools the solvent. It then condenses on the glass surface and drips back into the flask. Depending on the flow rate, a typical condenser uses 1 to 4 L of water per minute, says Dave Perkins, a senior research scientist at AstraZeneca, in the U.K., and an inventor of one of the new condensers.
Some condensers don?t use running water, such as the air-cooled Vigreux condenser and Sigma-Aldrich?s Airflux, which relies on a small amount of static water. But these pieces of equipment work only with solvents that boil at about 60¡ C or higher.
