Twenty school children and their teacher were rushed to hospital following a suspected chemical spill during a science lesson.
The Year 7 pupils at Hove?s Cardinal Newman School complained of ?stinging eyes, sore throats? and ?breathing problems? midway through the morning lesson.
Emergency services were on the scene shortly before 10am and evacuated the labs ? while ordering pupils and teachers throughout the rest of the school to stay in their classrooms for more than two hours.
Head teacher Dr James Kilmartin said a ?rigorous? and ?thorough?
investigation would be carried out into what happened.
He added: ?Parents have nothing to be worried about. I hope they will be reassured that when something did happen we took the right action to respond to it.?

In this paper, we first derive a model from literature providing insights into the influence of different aspects of safety on each other, that is, knowledge, perception, attitude, behavior and its consequences. We called it the ?KPABC model?. An experiment was furthermore designed and carried out to investigate the impact of laboratory safety interventions with students, and on the different safety aspects of the KPABC model. We finally explain the research results, and based on the findings, we provide recommendations on how to improve safety within higher education chemical labs.

MECHANICAL FAILURE MAY BE CAUSE OF GAS LEAK AT JACKSON CO. PLANT

JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -
A gas leak at a Jackson County plant Friday morning is being blamed on a mechanical failure. A pipe at Airgas Specialties started leaking Anhydrous Ammonia around 8:45 AM. Fortunately, no one was injured. It took county firefighters and environmental crews about an hour to contain the small leak.
Deputies blocked off a section of Saracena Road as emergency vehicles rushed to a gas leak at Airgas Specialties in the Helena Industrial Complex.
"We reported to the scene to find an actual plume, quickly dissipated. We just stayed to keep the plume down," said Escatawpa Fire Chief Donnie Lowery.
That plume originated from liquid Anhydrous Ammonia leaking from a transfer line that linked a 30,000 gallon tank to a rail car. Environmental officials say large amounts of the chemical can be corrosive if you inhale or touch it. They suspect a relief valve on the pipe malfunctioned.

POOL CHEMICAL SPILL CAUSES DISTURBANCE AT OAKNOLL RETIREMENT COMMUNITY

At approximately 1:40 PM on September 20, 2012, the Iowa City Fire Department was called to investigate fumes at the Oaknoll Retirement Community. The fire department responded with an engine, ladder truck, and Battalion Chief.
First-in units were shown to the pool equipment room by maintenance personnel. There was evidence of a moderate spill of pool chemicals. The Johnson County Hazardous Materials Team was dispatched, including off-duty Iowa City team members.
A callback of Iowa City Firefighters was initiated to backfill stations. After investigation of the spill was completed, hazmat team members made entry to the pool room and mitigated the hazard. The spill was contained to the equipment room, there was no evacuation from the building. Units were on scene for 4 hours. There were no injuries.

BETHEL -- A volatile substance in a Taylor Avenue chemical plant took the blame for a small fire Thursday night, but the facility's safety system and the town's fire department took the credit for preventing a much larger blaze.
Bethel Fire Chief Fred Ingram said crews received an automatic fire alarm from Vanderbilt Chemical at about 8:30 p.m. and within minutes employees of the plant called in to confirm a fire in one of the plant's machines.
Carbon disulfide -- or, CS2 -- caught fire during a manufacturing process when it reached a temperature above its ignition point of 200 degrees, Ingram said. It was not yet clear how the substance reached such a temperature, he said.
A small fire broke out in the plant's scrubber system -- which cleans excess substances from other machinery at the plant, Ingram said -- and an automatic fire-suppression system activated.

(CNN) -- A man lost both of his hands and four other people were injured in an explosion Friday morning at a southern Boston apartment building, Boston police said.
Police spokeswoman Neva Coakley said the nature of the explosion at the building in the Hyde Park neighborhood wasn't immediately clear. However, Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis told The Boston Globe that the man who lost his hands had been mixing chemicals in his basement apartment, and that the chemicals exploded.
Two people, including the man who lost his hands, were taken to a hospital, and three others were treated at the site in the Hyde Park neighborhood for unspecified injuries, Boston police said.
Davis said the man mixing the chemicals might have been experimenting with fireworks, and investigators didn't immediately know why the chemicals exploded, according to the Globe.

One person was severely burned and dozens more were evacuated when an explosive chemical mix sparked a fire in a warehouse district on Monday, Hollywood Fire Rescue officials said.
A small explosion and fire was reported around 2 p.m. in Synergy Labs at 3201 SW 42nd Street, Battalion Chief John Kuklinski said.
"Crews had the fire put out but there were some kind of hazardous chemicals," he said. "The company mixes these chemicals together for hair conditioner [but] by themselves they are toxic so we had to figure out what we had."
An employee suffered second-degree burns and was taken to Memorial Regional Hospital but it was unclear whether flames or chemicals caused his injuries.
