A CHEMICAL agent blamed for causing illness and death in America was used to clean an oil spill on the Great Barrier Reef, it has been alleged.
According to an investigation aired on Channel Nine's 60 Minutes program on Sunday night, about 2000 litres of CoRexit 9527 - a chemical dispersant used during the clean-up of BP's Deepwater Horizon catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico - was dispersed during the response to the grounding of Chinese bulk carrier The Shen Neng 1 off Rockhampton in April 2010.
The program aired allegations of illness and death among humans and wildlife in communities affected by the 2010 Gulf of Mexico spill, after millions of litres of the chemicals were sprayed in to the environment in an effort to disperse massive flows of crude oil.
It was also alleged about 2000 litres of CoRexit 9527 were used during the clean-up of the Shen Neng 1 grounding, while that agent and CoRexit 9500 were also used during the clean-up of the Montara oil rig spill off WA in 2009.
Jane Cutler from the offshore petroleum safety authority NOPSEMA told the program the chemical dispersants were "very commonly used and approved for use in Australia for an oil spill" and added she was not aware of the "specific toxicity" of every dispersant used in Australia.

BUILDING EVACUATED; HAZMAT SITUATION

WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) - Emergency crews responded Friday to a hazardous materials situation at H.B. Fuller Company in Walker.
The Walker Fire Department received a call around 11:15 a.m. from someone at the company, 2727 Kinney Ave. NW near Three Mile Road.
According to Lt. Dean England with the Walker Fire Department, crews arrived and discovered a 3,000-pound pressurized container releasing a "chemical agent" into the air.
England said the building was evacuated, and there were no injuries or complaints of illness reported.
H.B Fuller is a global industrial adhesives manufacturer, according to its website.
England told 24 Hour News 8 the chemical was a type of isocyanate. He did not have information as to what led to the hazmat situation and said only that there was "some kind of chemical reaction inside a batch."
Two crews entered the building wearing full hazmat suits. A decontamination tent was set up shortly after first responders got to the scene, and an ambulance was called to the scene as a precaution.

ADAMS CENTER, N.Y. -- A chemical spill at Hi-Lite Markings in Adams Center kept emergency crews busy for hours Saturday morning.
Crews were called to the business after an employee noticed a 55 gallon drum filled with a product called Styrene was leaking. Hazmat teams, including the state DEC spill response, were called to the scene.
Before going into the garage, where the product was said to be leaking, a decontamination area was set up and firefighters suited up, bBut they say the product was not hazardous to the public.
Officials tell us this was a situation that was handled well by everyone.
"You know, there are a lot of people involved in the entry because everyone who goes in has to have a safety team backing them up and that is the same way with decon. You have your support people out here. There are a lot of people involved in this," said Bob Simpson, Jefferson County Deputy Fire Coordinator.

CHEMICAL SPILL AT NANO COLLEGE

ALBANY -- Hazmat Crews were on the scene at the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering Saturday for a small chemical spill.
According to CNSE spokesman Steve Janack, around 9:30am a vendor working on site was draining chemicals into a treatment center and a small amount spilled. This spill caused fumes and authorities were called. Three people close to the spill went to the hospital voluntarily for observation.
Janack said there were no injuries or exposures reported.

SAN ANTONIO -- Emergency crews were called to an East Side business after a chemical spill Friday morning.
News 4 San Antonio was told 200 gallons of hydrochloric acid spilled at Blue Line Corporation at 3443 East Commerce around 10:20 a.m. Friday. Fire and HazMat crews were able to quickly contain the spill.
Two people reported feeling ill, but were not transported to the hospital.

A chemical for cleaning swimming pools leaked from a truck in St. Anthony on Thursday morning, causing residents of an apartment complex, a senior high-rise and a health care center to be told to remain inside.
Emergency responders from at least nine local agencies and two state agencies converged shortly after 10 a.m. at the site where a truck driver noticed his vehicle was leaking one of two chemicals he was carrying as he turned onto 37th Avenue N. The driver parked the truck, ran from it and reported the leak, St. Anthony Fire Chief John Malenick said.
Workers contained the leak about 11 a.m. After determining it was muriatic acid, or hydrochloric acid, they neutralized it with baking soda; that converted it to salt, water and carbon dioxide gas, which they washed into storm sewers, said Sam Brungardt, spokesman for the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency.

FIRE AND SMOKE CLOSES CF SCHOOL

The Cannon Falls middle school/high school building was closed after a fire and the resulting smoke caused some damage and concerns about air quality.
Fire alarms went off and the fire call went out at approximately 10:50 p.m., Thursday, August 8.
According to the District, it appears a chemical reaction occurred in some Rubbermaid garbage containers where the polyurethane floor refinishing chemicals and equipment were disposed. The garbage containers were inside, near the shop room in the northwest corner of the building.‰?ř
The fire was smoldering and kept contained, but caused smoke damage and, of biggest concern, possible air quality issues.
