A fire in a silo at the Port of Tampa led to a warning for downtown Tampa residents about chemical fumes.
A small fire in a silo at Gulf Sulphur Services, 1015 McCloskey Blvd., caused the chemical fumes, which have since dissipated, according to Tampa police.
According to Tampa Fire Rescue spokesman Lonnie Bennefield, the fire started around 9 a.m. in a silo, which contained sulphur and is owned by Gulf Sulphur.
Crews at the port attempted to extinguish the fire with steam, which created a cloud of sulphur dioxide that was visible at the port.
Anyone on the south side of downtown Tampa ‰?? including residents of Harbour Island and Channelside ‰?? was urged to seek shelter as a precaution. The warning was lifted at 11:39 a.m.

A student was caught in a dangerous situation while he was working alone at the University of Calgary early Thursday morning.
The man was working with tolulene, a solvent used as a industrial feedstock.
During the course of his work, some of the chemical leaked onto a heating element and caught fire.

A University of Calgary student was lucky to get out unscathed after a dangerous chemical he was working with caught fire.
By the time that fire crews arrived, the fire had burned itself out but there was still a large volume of smoke.
Crews had to set up fans to air out the building and are currently monitoring air quality.
The student was treated on scene by EMS and was released.
Inhaling tolulene can be potentially dangerous and can cause neurological damage.

BOULDER, Colo. - A hazmat incident has forced the evacuation of the old Boulder County Courthouse on the Pearl Street Mall Thursday afternoon and one person has been taken to the hospital after people inside the building complained of burning sensations in their eyes and throats.
The incident was reported to 911 at 12:40 p.m.
Boulder fire officials told the Daily Camera it appeared chlorine and phosphoric acid were accidentally spilled into a floor drain in the boiler room in the east wing of the courthouse, where it mixed with water containing potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide. A building worker told 7NEWS a maintenance work mixed the chemicals with water.
Fire spokeswoman Kim Scott told 7NEWS the chemical mixture created fumes that wafted through the east wing of the building, irritating people's eyes and throats.

Chili, N.Y. - Six people had to be checked out by emergency crews in Chili after police say they were mixing chemicals to put in their pool.
This happened on Baylor Circle just after 11 o‰??clock Wednesday night.
Police say some chemicals reacted badly with each other and caused a strong smell that alarmed the homeowners.
They stayed outside until Hazmat crews later determined it was safe for them to return to their home.

CHEMICAL LEAK AT DOW CONTAINED, OFFICIALS SAY

Tags: us_LA, industrial, release, response, acrolein
A chemical leak was reported Wednesday at Dow Chemical‰??s St. Charles Operations plant in Hahnville, but local and state officials said the incident did not pose a danger to neighboring communities.
A leak of acrolein, which is known to cause respiratory irritation, was discovered at Dow‰??s petrochemical manufacturing complex during a maintenance inspection about 8:20 a.m., said Jean Kelly, a spokeswoman for the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.
The leak was secured by 10:30 a.m., Kelly said, and the site was deemed to be clear of danger by Dow personnel at 11:24 a.m.
Dow crews contained the leak by spraying water on it, Kelly said. Acrolein, which is used as a pesticide and also to make other chemicals, dissolves easily in water.
‰??It just kind of stays right there and deactivates it pretty quickly,‰?? Kelly said about the sprayed-down chemical.

TWO INJURED IN HOT TUB CHLORINE EXPLOSION IN SURF CITY

A chlorine explosion occurring from mixing chemicals meant for a hot tub injured two in Surf City on Aug. 3.
At around 6 p.m. homeowner Russell Rocca was diluting chlorine with water when the mixture suddenly became unstable and exploded, leaving Rocca with minor burns to his face. Neighbor John Herrmann responded to the sound and attempted to enter the house to help when he realized the chemical odor was too intense.
Surf City police units responded to 15 North Third Street to find Rocca burned and having difficulties breathing, while Herrmann remained light-headed. Both were transported to Southern Ocean Medical Center. The Ship Bottom Volunteer Fire Co. and Berkeley Hazmat assisted Surf City police, fire and EMS in the effort.
The scenario at first puzzled Joe Hutchison, who during his 15 years as owner of Hutchison‰??s Pool and Spas in Surf City had never heard of anything like it occurring. Hutchison went to Rocca‰??s address to gain more detail on the incident though Rocca was not present.
Hutchison had heard of explosions around pools before, including one story where a man died after acid washing a drained pool. A huge explosion occurred when a spark from a wet and dry vacuum ignited the acid, blowing the pool cage clear off and killing the man. Not every explosion takes a spark, however.

Police have conducted more explosions in Ipswich, after finding more chemicals at a vacant block adjacent to the Clay Street home rocked by a blast two weeks ago.
An emergency situation was again declared in the area surrounding the home just after 5pm on Wednesday and revoked an hour later.
A "small quantity" of the chemical found at the home during a week-long search was found at a vacant block in Darling Street and destroyed, police say.

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A Goodwill was evacuated Wednesday afternoon after fire officials believe a donator dropped off a box that had pepper spray in it.
Fire crews were called to the Goodwill, located at 4220 Lafayette Road around 1:15 p.m. to the report of a possible chemical spill.
Officials with the Pike Township Fire Department believe a donator at the store dropped off a box that had a chemical in it, which created an odor in the building.
Fire crews say the 12 employees inside were treated at the scene for sore throats and headaches.
HAZMAT crews responded and believe pepper spray was inside the box.

HOBOKEN -- An oil spill from a leaking barrel that was dumped on the sidewalk on Third Street caused a hazmat scare this morning.
Hoboken firefighters, police officers and other emergency responders descended on a garage at 300 Third St. near Monroe Street on the report of an oil spill at around 9:15 a.m.
A 50 gallon barrel of motor or cooking oil was found on the south side of the street on the sidewalk.
Hoboken firefighters were doing preliminary cleanup and placed sand over a patch of oil surrounding the barrel on and near the sidewalk. They also covered a trail of oil across the street leading to a three-bay parking garage.

Dogfish Head Brewery‰??s employees evacuated their Milton headquarters Wednesday after they discovered a 300-gallon container of nitric acid leaking.
The Milton Fire Department initially responded, but later called for a HAZMAT team from DNREC, as well as support from other emergency service agencies.
Joe Hopple of Sussex County EMS says his crew evaluated six brewery workers, but none were injured.
‰??We did decontaminate some of them, their shoes and that to make sure that they didn‰??t have any [of the acid] on their shoes and we are also decontaminating the entry team from DNREC that went in and make sure the incident is contained,‰?? said Hopple. ‰??Right now, they‰??re waiting for a private contractor to do the cleanup.‰??
Nitric acid is a corrosive substance, which Hopple explains could‰??ve caused burns and respiratory problems for employees.
