About 100 homes have been evacuated in Louisiana in the US after a derailed train wagon leaked toxic chemicals.
The wagon leaked sodium hydroxide, which can be lethal if inhaled, a Union Pacific railways spokeswoman said.
More than 20 train wagons went off tracks west of Baton Rouge at 15:30 local time (20:30 GMT) on Sunday. The engineer and conductor were not hurt.
Air pollution was not detected. The extent of the damage would be known soon, state governor Bobby Jindal said.
"Anytime you have chemicals leaking into the environment, that's a serious issue," he added.

Summit County, Colo. (KKCO) --- According to the Colorado State Patrol, a tanker hauling diesel fuel and gasoline crashed and rolled Saturday evening, closing Loveland Pass indefinitely for a lengthy cleanup and investigation.
At least 4,000 pounds of fuel spilled in the crash, and it is unknown if and how badly the waterways have been affected.
The crash happened at approximately 8:15 p.m. when 38-year-old Michael Johnson, of Thornton, was driving a tanker on westbound on Highway 6 near milepost 223 for Solar Transportation, based out of West Des Moines, Iowa. Johnson lost control on a curve and the tanker rolled onto its right side.
Johnson was transported with minor injuries and was issued a citation for careless driving.
The tanker was hauling approximately 8,500 pounds of fuel. The Colorado State Patrol Hazardous Materials unit and Balfor Environmental Cleanup are responding to the scene. Highway 6 over Loveland Pass remains closed at this time, and no timetable has been set for it to reopen.

11 people have died in Cuba after drinking illegal alcohol, the public heath ministry has said. At least 40 others have been admitted to hospital in the capital, Havana, and several remain in a serious condition.
The toxic liquid was stolen from a government department and sold as traditional Cuban rum, according to reports read on state television. The victims suffered symptoms of poisoning by methanol, which is commonly used as a solvent or fuel.

Things had quickly gone south for David Snyder.
His hand was torn and bleeding from the volatile chemicals that exploded after midnight as he mixed them in his Davis apartment. Police and the bomb squad would soon be on their way, and he needed to get to a hospital fast.
Snyder was in trouble and knew whom he had to call, according to a police investigator.
Tashari El-Sheikh, Snyder's childhood friend and Davis neighbor, picked up the phone in the middle of that January night, the investigator testified in Yolo Superior Court last week.
Now prosecutors have charged El-Sheikh, identified in a UC Davis directory as a post-doctorate employee in mechanical and aerospace engineering, as an accessory to a felony for allegedly removing the explosive chemicals from Snyder's blast-damaged apartment and disposing of them in trash bins scattered across the city. Prosecutors filed the complaint Wednesday in Yolo Superior Court.
Snyder has pleaded not guilty to 17 explosives- and weapons-related charges related to the blast in the early morning hours of Jan. 17 at his Russell Park apartment complex in Davis. He remains free on $2 million bail.
Snyder may learn at a Sept. 6 hearing whether he will stand trial in connection with the blast.
During a preliminary hearing last week, authorities first disclosed the name of the friend believed to have aided Snyder in the hours following the blast.

DEMOLITION BEGINS ON ILLIOPOLIS CHEMICAL PLANT

Illiopolis - On a Friday night in April of 2004 a massive explosion rocked the Formosa Plastic Plant in the Sangamon County village of Illiopolis.
Two more explosions followed. Five died and 3 were injured.
Now, nine years later, demolition of the plant is underway. "It's a constant reminder of what happened back then," Mayor Sam Rogers told WAND News. "It's an eyesore and a lot of people in town have wanted it cleaned up for quite awhile."
In addition to tearing down the plant an environmental clean up will also take place.
The U.S. Chemical Safety Board determined an employee at the plant overrode a safety valve allowing vinyl chloride liquid and vapors to leak into the plant causing an explosion. The safety board also found the company failed to properly train its employees to evacuate during a hazardous chemical leak.

Barbara Boxer, chairwoman of the U.S. Senate‰??s environment and public works committee, sat visibly frustrated in a June congressional hearing. She finally told the Environmental Protection Agency official that ‰??lives are being lost‰?? while the agency failed to better safeguard the fertilizer chemical that blew up West.
Weeks later, Boxer wrote to the nation‰??s governors. She implored them to do what they could to improve the security of ammonium nitrate. Finally, the California Democrat turned to the White House. The results of her efforts became public last week when President Barack Obama issued an executive order directing the federal government to improve safety at chemical facilities.
‰??For me, it‰??s a game-changer,‰?? Boxer said in an interview with The Dallas Morning News. ‰??I saw the intransigence of some of the agencies. I saw them arguing and not committing. ‰?| We asked the president to help make sure this [type of disaster] never happens again.‰??

MACON COUNTY ‰?? On Friday August 2nd at approximately 19:00 hours, Clarks Chapel Fire Rescue responded to a report of two civilians down with unknown problems at 1037 Prentiss Bridge Road at Norton Creek Farms.
On arrival, units found high levels of carbon monoxide in the air. Mutual aid was requested to provide manpower and additional air resources.

A Garden City sanitation worker suffered burns to his body after a resident failed to properly dispose of chemicals, the Department of Public Works confirmed Friday.
The incident happened last Wednesday while the worker was on route collecting refuse in the western section.
The unknown chemical, which was placed in the rubbish collection, was in a container hidden from view in a dark colored bag, according to Mayor John Watras. Upon collecting the rubbish, which was placed curbside, the worker was sprayed with the chemicals as he packed off the hopper, the mayor said.

An extra-alarm fire ravaged a West Side building for nearly three hours Saturday night before it was put out.

The fire was put out by 10:05 p.m., according to fire media. A back wall collapsed in the blaze and the building is expected to be a total loss.
The fire prompted a HazMat response about 8 p.m. because of burning gasoline and natural gas, according to fire media.
The fire begin in the mechanic area of the building when spilled gasoline ignited due to a broken light sparking on the floor, according to fire media.

A home in Universal City was destroyed Friday morning after it caught fire, officials said.
Universal City Fire Marshal John Hatzel, said the fire engulfed one house in the 400 block of Wagon Crossing Road around 2 a.m.
One of the residents of the house restored cars so the garage contained some chemicals, Hatzel said. He added one possible cause of the fire could have been a gas or chemical leak that was then ignited by the pilot light of the garage's hot water heater.
Neighbors said they believed they heard an explosion, Hatzel said.
The fire only left some walls of the house standing, and also destroyed many of the resident's cars, Hatzel said.

HWASEONG, South Korea, Aug. 2 (Yonhap) -- Two workers were killed and one injured Friday when a chemical tank exploded at a plant in the southern city of Hwaseong, police and fire officials said.
The 60,000-liter outdoor storage tank containing some 20,000 liters of sodium aluminate exploded at around 11:55 a.m. at the chemical factory in Hwaseong, 60 kilometers south of Seoul, they added.
Police said they suspect the explosion occurred when the three workers were doing welding work to install a handrail next to the tank.
The explosion might have occurred when the sodium aluminate, which is used for many industrial and technical applications, came into contact with the heat source, police officers said.

Alcoa Deputy Fire Chief Tom Daffron says 17 people have been taken to the hospital after a chemical incident at the Alcoa Texas Roadhouse.
He says an employee accidentally improperly mixed chemicals including bleach, which created a chemical gas.
The patients mainly had skin, eye and lung irritation. Daffron says the people were all conscious when they were taken to the hospital.
He says crews are working inside the restaurant to ventilate the building, monitor the air and remove the chemical smell.

The Fruitland Fire Department responded to Dickinson‰??s Frozen Foods on NW 21st Street in Fruitland after reports of a toxic chemical leak around 9:00 p.m. July 31st.
Employees at the frozen food plant reported a leak of anhydrous ammonia which required a HAZMAT team to evacuate the building, however, there were no reports of injuries.
Crews were able to contain the chemical cloud within the building, but warned local residents of the situation.
The Idaho State Region 3 Hazardous Material Team was able to use specialized equipment to stop the leak, ventilate the plant, and work resumed as normal this morning.
