Aerosols and detergents released from an exploding lorry on the M62 have polluted the River Beal at Milnrow, killing hundreds of fish.

An investigation has now been launched by the Environment Agency after the chemical spill killed 350 fish.

Residents rang the Environment Agency after they noticed a strong smell coming from the river which was "like fabric softener."

The agency said it believed a crash on the M62 on Tuesday caused substances to leak into the river.

It is believed the blazing lorry had been carrying 400 litres of cleaning products such as detergent and fabric softener. The driver managed tio escape before the vehicle exploded
