WESTMINSTER, COLO. Two homes have been damaged but no injuries are reported following a suspected natural gas explosion in Westminster, Colorado.
Westminster Fire Department spokeswoman Diana Wilson says both homes were evacuated by the time firefighters got on the scene on Thursday.
Wilson says fires erupted after the explosion, but they are under control

HIGHLAND FALLS - Hazmat crews responded to a chlorine spill at the West Point Military Academy earlier today.
About 150 gallons of liquid chlorine leaked inside the Lusk Water Treatment Plant near 721 Washington Road, located in the northern part of the campus. The immediate area was evacuated and traffic was rerouted.
The West Point Fire Department is dealing with the situation and the Highland Falls Fire Department is on standby.

UPDATE: AMMONIA HYDROXIDE SPILL CLOSES ROUTE 309, TWO FIREFIGHTERS TREATED

For more than nine hours Thursday morning, Route 309 northbound in Montgomery Township was affected by an ammonia hydroxide spill from a tractor trailer.
Two firefighters were also treated for heat exhaustion.
Six fire crews cleaned up the HAZMAT incident, which closed Route 309 in both directions between Richardson Road and Mele Avenue until 5:30 a.m.
Fire Department of Montgomery Township responded to Bethlehem Pike and Mele Avenue at 12:04 a.m. Thursday for a report of a vehicle leaking fuel, according to Rick Lesniak, director of fire services.
Around the same time, the Montgomery County 911 received reports of a tractor trailer leaking a corrosive liquid, Lesniak said.

SAN ANGELO, Texas Ñ The La Quinta Inn Conference Center and Inn in southwest San Angelo was evacuated Thursday morning after a tanker truck loaded with 3,000 gallons of hydrochloric acid pulled into the parking lot with a leak from a cracked pipe.
San Angelo Fire Marshal Ross Coleman estimated the spill to be about 300 to 350 gallons. Anthony Wilson, the city's public information officer, said the La Quinta and two other nearby businesses, one of which was the QualTrust Credit Union, were evacuated as a precaution.
Wilson said some of the acid was threatening to spread into the neighboring QualTrust parking lot, but safety crews set up a sand berm to prevent it from spreading further.
The truck is owned by Refinery Specialties Inc. of Bryan, which had a truck en route to clean up the spill, Wilson said. The San Angelo Fire Department dispatched four trucks, a rescue unit and two ambulances to the site, and Goodfellow Air Force Base sent a hazardous materials handling team to plug the leak before it worsened. The city's Operations Department diked the spill with 35 yards of sand to contain most of the acid within a few feet of the truck.

One worker was killed in an explosion at a Williams Cos. ethylene steam cracker in Geismar, La., this morning.
The explosion occurred at 8:37 AM. After the blast, 300 workers were evacuated. Seventy-three people were taken to area hospitals, eight of them via airlift. Ten employees remained in a safe room on the grounds to help shut down the plant. At a press conference, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said every worker has been accounted for.
The explosion was followed by a massive fire, which raged into the afternoon. On the morning of the event, Ascension Parish officials, concerned about subsequent explosions and chemical contaminants in the air, issued a shelter-in-place order for a 2-mile radius around the plant.

Firefighters from Preston fire service were called to a chemical fire at toiletries company, B3 International at Redscar Industrial Estate, Preston when a 700 litre vat of ethenol caught alight.
Station manager, Shaun Walton said: "The vat caught fire due to a process being carried out at the chemical mixing plant.
"Firefighters contained the blaze using foam and, thankfully, there were no injuries.
"However, due to the highly flammable nature of the substance we had to ensure that building was safe by ventilating the area.
"We also worked with our colleagues at The Environment Agency to ensure that any substance that might have leaked into nearby drainage systems was contained and there was no further risk to the public health."

MARILAO, Bulacan-A chemical tank of a local factory exploded early Wednesday, sending debris that damaged at least 30 houses and the fire station in Barangay (village) Loma de Gato, police said on Thursday.
The tank of the WT Treat Chemical Trading Corp. blew up during a thunderstorm at past 12 a.m. The plant's resident engineer, Rufino Damayo, said lightning and the downpour may have raised the pressure inside the facility that caused the tank to blow up.
WT Treat processes chemicals to produce hydrogen peroxide, a cleaning agent.
Superintendent Romeo Rillo, Bulacan fire marshal, said the blast tore through house ceilings, walls and fences. Even the glass wall of the Loma de Gato fire station was shattered, he said.
Rillo said they were validating Damayo's claims as they started an investigation to determine whether the factory would be allowed to continue operating in the neighborhood.

QLD MEN DRANK BIODIESEL INGREDIENT: FRIEND

Three young Queensland men who died of suspected methanol poisoning drank a batch of alcohol that was meant to be used in biodiesel, not for human consumption, a neighbour says.
Joel Lynam and Vincent Summers, both 21, and 30-year-old Bryan Wilmot all died.
Media reports say they drank a dodgy batch of home-brewed Italian spirit grappa at Mr Lynam's parent's Ballandean property.
But neighbour and winemaker Angelo Puglisi says the reports are wrong and the alcohol had been brewed by Joel Lynam's father for use in biofuel, not for human consumption.

"This 'grappa' that everyone is talking about was being produced to make diesel and somehow these young fellas got hold of it," he told AAP.

MISSOULA - Officials say that several thousand gallons of chemicals spilled overnight at Spectrum Products in Missoula, prompting a hazardous materials response.
Several agencies are on the scene of the incident, where between 5,000 and 7,000 gallons of citric, phosphoric, and sulfuric acids spilled out after a valve was accidentally left open overnight.
Officials tell our reporter at the scene that the spill has been contained to the building on Spectrum Lane, and firefighters in hazmat suits were preparing to go into the building and further assess the situation as of about 11:45 a.m.

GLASSBORO, N.J., (CBS) - Emergency crews responded to a HAZMAT situation at Rowan University in Glassboro Wednesday evening.
Officials say firefighters were called out at about 5:30 p.m. at the 200 block of Meditation Walk.
Chopper 3 HD was over the scene.
A school spokeswoman says a student was conducting an experiment in the chemistry lab when two chemicals had a reaction that set off an alarm.
The building was evacuated and the spokeswoman says there are no injuries to report and no damage to the building.

Chemicals that are widely used in consumer products offer challenges to product manufacturers, risk managers, environmental regulators, environmental scientists, and the interested public. However, the factors that cause specific chemicals to rise to the level of regulatory, scientific, and social movement concern and scrutiny are not well documented, and scientists are frequently unclear about exactly how their research impacts policy. Through a case study of advocacy around flame retardant chemicals, this paper traces the pathways through which scientific evidence and concern is marshaled by both advocacy groups and media sources to affect policy change. We focus our analysis around a broad coalition of environmental and public health advocacy organizations and an investigative journalism series published in 2012 in the Chicago Tribune. We demonstrate that the Tribune series both brought the issue to a wider public audience and precipitated government action, including sta!
te policy revisions and federal Senate hearings. We also show how a broad and successful flame retardant coalition developed, leveraged a media event, and influenced policy at multiple institutional levels. The analysis draws on over 110 in-depth interviews, literature and Web site reviews, and observations at a flame retardant manufacturing company, government offices, and scientific and advocacy conferences.
