FIREFIGHTERS and HAZMAT crews will remain on a southern Sydney street on Monday night as they search for the source of petrol fumes.
The vapours built up in sewer pipes beneath Loftus Avenue, Loftus, before blowing a sewer cover off about 4pm on Monday.
Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman Superintendent Ian Krimmer said an exclusion zone remained in place on Monday night as crews continued to take air samples.
"We're still getting readings on one section of the sewerage pipe," he told AAP.
The fumes had been identified as petrol and a nearby service station shut down as emergency workers searched for the source of the leak.

NEWPORT, Vt. -
A tragic accident in Newport Saturday after a local woman was run over at a convenience store.
Police say it began when a chemical fire retardant was unintentionally released at the pumps. The chemical release triggered a panic, as people tried to get away from the pumps. Police say a man attempted to move his truck away from the gas pumps and ran over and killed Tina Hall, 45, of Newport.
Police say it's not clear what caused the release of the fire suppression chemical. No charges have been filed yet against the 18-year-old driver.

SEWARD Ñ Seward residents aren't sure when they can return home after Sunday's fire and explosion at a chemical processing plant.
They hope authorities will determine Monday it is safe for their return.
About 20 fire and rescue agencies responded around 12:30 p.m. Sunday to the Nova-Kem plant, 16161 Sixth St., in Seward, which is 18 miles west of Rockford. One worker was hospitalized from the incident, although the extent of injuries is unknown.
"We have evacuated the two-mile radius around the facility and until (the fire) burns down a little farther we won't know how long that will take (to extinguish)," Pecatonica Deputy Fire Chief Mike Knoup said.
It was unclear how many people were evacuated.
Emergency crews let the fire at the plant continue to burn throughout the night because dousing it with water could cause another explosion.
The chemical hexachlorodisilane, which is a corrosive, water-reactive, colorless liquid that requires extreme care when handling and transporting, is used in the plant.
According to Nova-Kem's website, the substance is used in memory device production.

BEIJING (AP) - Fire raged through a poultry plant in northeastern China on Monday, trapping workers inside a cluttered slaughterhouse and killing at least 119 people, reports and officials said.
Several dozen people also were hurt in the blaze in Jilin province's Mishazi township, which appeared to have been sparked by three early morning explosions, the official Xinhua News Agency said. The provincial fire department, on its microblog, attributed the blasts to a leak of ammonia, a gas that is kept pressurized as part of the cooling system in meat processing plants.
State broadcaster CCTV quoted unidentified workers as saying the fire broke out during a change of shifts and may have originated in a locker room at a time when about 350 workers were at the plant, owned by Jilin Baoyuanfeng Poultry Co.

Authorities say a Lincoln man is lucky to be alive after mixing two types of drain cleaner for a clogged toilet.
Lincoln Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Tim Linke said the call came in about 12:30 Sunday morning, in the 1200 block of S. 48th Street.
Crews responded to a man suffering breathing problems from fumes, after trying to deal with a clog in the commode.
LFR Captain Jay Adams said the man suffered some respiratory issues but declined to seek medical attention at the hospital.
According to Adams, the Hazardous Materials crew was called to help determine the nature of the fumes and how best to deal with them. In short order the fumes were identified as being highly hazardous.
"It caused a chemical reaction where the homeowner breathed in fumes from that and possibly it could have been a fatal mistake" said Adams.
Fire crews wore air packs to enter the house and tried to use a plunger to free the blockage, without success.

The latest rollover by a hazmat truck happened yesterday when a JP Noonan fuel tanker truck flipped in Medford. The accident occurred on Friday afternoon at 4:15 pm spilling 10,000 gallons of fuel.
As a result of the daytime ban, hazmat trucks cannot cut through Downtown Boston from 6am to 8pm. After 8pm, hazmat trucks are still allowed to take the "downtown shortcut" on Atlantic Ave., N. Washington St., Cross St. and Commercial St. Fuel trucks can also deliver and do business within Boston at any time.
Recently, we have been receiving more photos of hazmat trucks that are illegally defying the daytime ban. HAZMAT SITUATION AT BURNET MIDDLE SCHOOL

Original post (11:44 a.m.): The Austin Fire Department says five kids and three adults are being treated in a Hazmat situation at Burnet Middle School in Northwest Austin. The Austin Independent School District says the cause appears to be some sort of chemical substance found in a student restroom.
The patients report burning eyes and nausea. Some have been transported to Dell Children's Hospital.
The entire school was evacuated for about 20 minutes. While everyone has now been allowed back inside, emergency officials are blocking off the area where the substance was found.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The massive blaze that razed the entire Glochem Industries Ltd active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) export unit to the ground at the Jawaharlal Nehru Pharma City was a disaster waiting to happen.
Not only did the unit not have the mandatory fire safety clearances, Glochem had been rapped on two occasions by the inspector of factories in the past year and had to cough up fines of Rs 50,000 on each of these occasions.
What is even more alarming is that the Pharma City could be a virtual ticking time bomb as only three units out of the existing 44 units spread over the 2100-acre pharma park have fire safety certificates. "Only three units Acacia Life Sciences, Arora Matthey, Kanoria Chemicals have got the requisite no-objection certificates (NOC) from the state fire safety wing. We will now issue notices to the remaining units in Pharma City after inspection of all the units in a couple of weeks," said Jnana Sundara Rao, district fire officer, state fire safety department, on Friday.

One person was hurt and an area business was evacuated this morning after an explosion.
The blast rocked Ungerer & Company on N. Commerce Way in Bethlehem, Pa. just before 10 a.m.
One person was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Northampton County dispatchers.
A spokeswoman for the company says the explosion was contained to a back area and that the building was briefly evacuated.
It wasn't clear exactly what caused the blast, which appeared to possibly be a chemical explosion, according to dispatchers.
