Interesting discussion.
I started 35 years ago as an Assistant Industrial Hygienist on the OHS staff of a well-known research university. Fume hood performance was part of my first assignment.
It sounds like little or nothing has changed since then, except that except that ASHRAE 110 was published and the sash position alarm system we developed has been modified and is more widely used. Same problems, same solutions.

Subject: [DCHAS-L] Chemistry Fume Hood Experience
Good Afternoon,
I would like to start a discussion on current experience with chemistry fume hoods related to overall quality, best value, interior construction, coatings/materials of construction, installation issues, air flow alarms, order lead time, energy saving features plus anything else that comes to mind.
Thank you,
