THE derailment of a train carrying dangerous goods near Colebrook will be investigated by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau.
Tasmania Fire Service crews spent today cleaning up after the chemical spill near the southern Tasmanian town.
It happened when four wagons of a south-bound Tasrail train derailed about 9.30pm yesterday.
The TFS said no one was injured in the incident but a quantity of chemicals was spilled trackside.
No residential properties near the accident site had been affected by the chemical hazard, the TFS said.
TasRail said two of the four derailed wagons were empty, while the other two were carrying phosphoric acid and sodium hyposulphite.
"As soon as the derailment occurred, TasRail promptly notified the TFS and the Environment Protection Authority," TasRail CEO Damien White said in a statement this afternoon.
"All TasRail locomotives carry spill kits and the prompt action taken by staff to place bunding around the tanktainer resulted in the initial spillage being confined.

Newly updated software from NOAA and experts at Dow Chemical could provide emergency workers responding to hazardous chemical spills more and better information about the chemical reactions they may encounter.
The free software, known as the Chemical Reactivity Worksheet, predicts potential hazards from mixing chemicals. This significant update is the result of a two-year-long collaboration between NOAA chemical response specialists and technical experts at Dow Chemical.

ETHANOL SAFETY SEMINARS SCHEDULED FOR TWO WISCONSIN TOWNS

The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) and CN Railway will co-host two Ethanol Safety Seminars in Wisconsin during April.
The seminar in Stanley will be held on Tuesday, April 16 at the Stanley Fire Department, also co-hosted by ACE Ethanol LLC. The Wisconsin Rapids seminar will be held on Wednesday, April 17 in the auditorium of Mid-State Technical College, also co-hosted by Big River Resources Boyceville LLC.
Both seminars are free and feature a morning session from 9 am to 2 pm and an evening session from 5:30 pm to 10 pm. Lunch and dinner will be provided.
The goal of these seminars is for attendees to gain full ethanol emergency response training experience that they can put to use immediately in the field as well as pass along to other first response teams. A majority of this training is based on the Complete Training Guide to Ethanol Emergency Response, a training package created by the Ethanol Emergency Response Coalition (EERC) that has been distributed throughout the United States and to several countries worldwide.

Despite all the eyes on the Richmond Chevron refinery before last August's fire, the plant's corroded crude pipe still went unnoticed, federal and state officials said Friday.
Federal and state investigators have determined Chevron disregarded its own safety policies and knowingly failed to replace the corroded pipe that ultimately burst, leading to the leaking gas igniting. The blaze sent a column of toxic smoke into the air, endangering plant workers and causing thousands of local residents to seek medical attention for respiratory problems.
High-level officials from the U.S. Chemical Safety Board, the California Occupational Safety and Health Program (Cal/OSHA) and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District said the state's regulatory oversight system needs a major overhaul to prevent similar fires.
Investigators delivered the statements Friday at Richmond City Hall to state legislators including Senator Loni Hancock (D-Berkeley), Senator Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord) and Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner (D-Berkeley), who held the hearing to find out which aspects of state law need change. "The goal is to see how we can write policy on every level of government to prevent future incidents like this from occurring," Hancock said.

CHEMICAL CLOUD AT A POCONO COUNTRY PLACE

Emergency personnel responded to a house in A Pocono Country Place in Tobyhanna after a woman cleaning a rental property reported a chemical cloud in the residence.
APCP Public Safety Chief Dan Yeager said emergency officials were called when the woman went to an urgent care center. She told officials she had mixed ammonia and bleach and it set off a chemical reaction, according to Yeager.
Coolbaugh Fire Department, Pocono Mountain Regional Ambulance and APCP Public Safety Department responded to the scene.
The chemical was contained inside the residence, Yeager said. The woman's condition is not known. No one else was injured.

NEW ORLEANS, April 7, 2013 Ñ The American Chemical Society (ACS) today announced awarding the first grants in a new initiative intended to increase understanding of the science underpinning global climate change among thousands of people around the country.
Bassam Z. Shakhashiri, Ph.D., 2012 president of ACS, the world's largest scientific society, said that 11 of the Society's local sections will receive the first ACS Presidential Climate Science Challenge Grants. The local sections, which are smaller subdivisions of the Society, will use the grants in implementing innovative ways to encourage use of the ACS Climate Science Toolkit to engage a wide variety of audiences. Shakhashiri, a professor of chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, announced the recipients during the ACS' 245th National Meeting & Exposition, being held here through Thursday.
The ACS Climate Science Toolkit is a web-based resource that explains the chemistry and physics of climate change. Launched last December, it was one of the major initiatives of Shakhashiri's term as ACS president.

MIDDLETOWN - A storage facility in Middletown caught fire last night, destroying five units within the facility.
The fire broke out just after 11 p.m. last night at the Orange Storage Facility on Robertson Drive. More than 60 firefighters responded, and a hazmat team was also called to the scene after dangerous pool chemicals were found in one of the units.
Firefighters say most of the units that were destroyed contained clothing and furniture. No injuries were reported.
