TAYLORSVILLE, N.C. Ñ Sheri Farley walks with a limp. The only job she could hold would be one where she does not have to stand or sit longer than 20 minutes, otherwise pain screams down her spine and up her legs.
"Damaged goods," Ms. Farley describes herself, recalling how she recently overheard a child whispering to her mother about whether the "crippled lady" was a meth addict.
For about five years, Ms. Farley, 45, stood alongside about a dozen other workers, spray gun in hand, gluing together foam cushions for chairs and couches sold under brand names like Broyhill, Ralph Lauren and Thomasville. Fumes from the glue formed a yellowish fog inside the plant, and Ms. Farley's doctors say that breathing them in eventually ate away at her nerve endings, resulting in what she and her co-workers call "dead foot."

ALLEN PARK (WWJ) - Some Downriver gym members went without a workout Saturday as the LA Fitness in Allen Park was closed for several hours due to a possible hazmat situation.
Fire sergeant Michael Shook says the hazmat team was called to the scene because of a strong irritating odor coming from one of the locker rooms.
"It was an ammonia smell - seemed to be a housekeeping error where they mixed bleach and ammonia and poured it down a common sewer and it happened to rise up making it an irritating smell, it can be toxic at high levels," said Shook. " But the hazmat team cleared the room, ventilated and flushed all the drains."

MAYFLOWER, Ark. Ñ Authorities are working to clean up an oil spill in central Arkansas after a crude oil pipeline ruptured.
Mayflower Police Chief Robert Satkowski said an ExxonMobil pipeline sprung a leak Friday afternoon in the small city about 20 miles northwest of Little Rock.
The leak reinforced concerns many critics have raised about the proposed Keystone XL pipeline.

Satkowski says the pipeline has since been shut off.
The spill forced authorities to evacuate dozens of homes Friday.
Arkansas Department of Emergency Management spokesman Brandon Morris said earlier Friday that oil reached nearby Lake Conway, but he later said that information was incorrect.
Oil spilled onto the road and lawns, but it's not clear exactly how much.
ExxonMobil says it's working with emergency responders and local authorities to respond to the oil spill. The company says the incident is under investigation.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (OPEM) is reporting that six people had to be rushed to hospital last evening after a chemical leak at the Wisynco Company, White Marl, St Catherine.
The health ministry has confirmed the gas to be ammonia.
Members of the Jamaica Fire Brigade and the Jamaica Constabulary Force were on site for several hours to ensure effective containment and to conduct investigations.

UK HSE POSTS GUIDANCE ON CONTROLLING OCCUPATIONAL EXPOSURE TO MANUFACTURED NANOMATERIALS

The UK's Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has posted a guidance document describing how to control occupational exposure to manufactured nanomaterials in the workplace.
HSE states that "the guidance is specifically about the manufacture and manipulation of all manufactured nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes (CNT), and other bio-persistent high aspect ratio nanomaterials (HARNs" and that "it has been prepared in response to emerging evidence about the toxicity of these materials".
According to HSE, the control principles described in the guidance can be applied to all nanomaterials used in the workplace. HSE highlights any differences in the approach between control of CNTs and other bio-persistent HARNs to other types of nanomaterials.

FIRE STARTS IN NORWALK METH LAB, 5 EVACUATED

NORWALK Ñ A meth lab was raided at a Norwalk apartment yesterday and a 3-year-old child and four adults were evacuated after a fire was started in the bedroom where the lab was located, according to the Norwalk Police Department.
Police raided the 37 C Bouscay Ave. apartment about 5 p.m. after receiving a search warrant by Norwalk Municipal Court Judge John Ridge. Officers could see people looking out an upstairs window and "rustling around" upstairs where the lab was located when they announced their presence, the report said.
When officers went inside, Paul Prince, 33, of Mansfield, was seen running from the upstairs bedroom to the bathroom. That is when officers found the fire and evacuated the residents, the report stated.

EAST GREENBUSH - A hazmat team and firefighters were called in to help extinguish a fire at the UAlbany East Campus Friday afternoon, police said.
The fire broke out Friday afternoon at 5 University Place, in a room containing hazardous chemicals.
The small fire was put out shortly, but hazmat teams from the Troy and Rensselaer County were called in to address concerns over the chemicals.

CHEVRON DOCKS CEO PAY OVER SAFETY

You don't often see a major corporation cut its chief executive's pay, certainly not while the company is making more than $26 billion a year.
But that's what Chevron Corp.'s board did Wednesday.
The board decided to cut the annual bonus for CEO John Watson, citing some "operating incidents" that the company suffered in 2012.
The most notable of those: a deadly fire at an offshore natural gas platform near Nigeria, and the Aug. 6 fire at Chevron's Richmond refinery.
Chevron used to have a sterling reputation for safety, at least among its peers in the oil industry. But that reputation became tarnished after a 2011 refinery explosion in Wales killed four men.
"Our leadership understands that there are consequences when it doesn't meet expectations, especially in areas as critical as process safety," said Chevron spokesman Lloyd Avram Wednesday.

A 23-year-old Sterling Heights woman was found dead today in a Sterling Heights park in an apparent suicide and authorities found toxic substances inside her car, Sterling Heights police said.
The woman, who was not named, was found about 4:45 a.m. by an officer conducting a check of Delia Park, 3001 Eighteen Mile.
The officer saw a 2006 Ford Focus parked in the west end of the parking lot. When the officer approached, there were signs in several visible locations on the car that read "Contact 911 Hazmat," police said.
The officer smelled a strong odor of an unknown substance coming from within the car and saw the unresponsive woman in the driver's seat. A bucket containing an unknown liquid and containers of muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) were found inside the car, police said.
