The Wehr Chemistry building was evacuated around 11 a.m. Friday morning after a chemical was discovered to be leaking, university spokespeople and student witnesses said.
....
"A harmless chemical was left open and the building is being cleared for ventilation for the time being," read the email, sent by the Office of the Registrar. "There is no safety risk. Because of this, noon classes are canceled."
Students, who were already being allowed back into the building around noon, said there was a noticeable odor in the hallways.
The specific chemical leaked could not yet be confirmed, said Andrew Brodzeller, an associate director of university communication.
"Marquette's Department of Public Safety and the Environmental Health and Safety unit have verified the chemical left open was harmless," Brodzeller said in an email. "Additional details of the incident will not be available until DPS and the Environmental Health and Safety unit have completed their report."

The gas line leak at a restaurant in north Colorado Springs has been fixed.
It took hazmat crews with the Colorado Springs Fire Department about 10 minutes to "cap" the line at the Pizza Hut in the 15-hundred block of Briargate Blvd.
The area around the restaurant is not longer blocked off.
The gas leak was caused by a construction crew that cut a line while remodeling the now closed pizza restaurant that will soon be a Steak n' Shake.

HAYSI, Va. (AP) -- Police and CSX officials say a train has derailed in the southwest Virginia town of Haysi.
CSX spokesman Bob Sullivan tells the Bristol Herald Courier (http://bit.ly/X3eIYK ) that the 64-car, two-locomotive train was headed from Hamlet, N.C., to Russell, Ky., when 15 cars derailed Saturday morning. Sullivan says no injuries, deaths or evacuations have been reported.
Sullivan says some of the derailed cars contain hazardous materials, and one was leaking an acid that's used in herbicides and for other purposes. CSX officials, the Virginia State Police, state hazardous material crews and local fire departments were on the scene Saturday afternoon.

"Firefighters used breathing gear to enter the three-storey premises, where a small amount of caustic soda had spilled on the ground floor.
Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), although non-flammable, is a highly-corrosive material.
The fire service spokesman said: "Other chemicals stored in the building were safe in their containers and fire crews liaised with on-site representatives of the company."
The building was made safe and a stop message received by fire control at 8.50p
