Tuesday, 6.25pm: A Peterborough chemicals firm which allowed toxic chemicals to leak into the River Nene killing thousands of fish is facing a large fine after appearing in court today (26 February).
Representatives for Safapac, based in Stapleton Road, Orton Southgate, Peterborough appeared at Peterborough Magistrates Court where they pleaded guilty to one count of causing toxic chemicals to enter the river in July 2012.
The court heard how almost 5,000 litres of dangerous substances, including insecticides, fungicides and a disinfectant was leaked into a surface water drain at some point between July 15 and July 18.
On July 18, when the spill was reported, fish were spotted leaping out of the river onto the bank to escape the harmful effects, and it is estimated that 3,000 fish, including trout, roach and eels went Ômissing' from the river as a result.
A variety of insect life was also killed, and the effects of the spill were spotted more than 14 kilometres away from factory,
Richard Wald, defending, said the spill had been caused by vandals, who opened the taps on containers holding the three chemicals.
Chair Magistrate Hilary Shields was told the maximum fine she could impose at the Magistrate's court was £50,000, but the sentencing hearing could be heard at Peterborough Crown Court where a judge would have more sentencing power, including an unlimited fine.
After a period of deliberation, Mrs Shields said the bench did not believe they had sufficient sentencing powers, and sent the case to the crown court on a date to be confirmed.
The vandals who caused the leak have never been caught.

TWO INJURED IN CHARLESTOWN LAB INCIDENT

Two people are being transported to the hospital after a chemical incident occurred in a Massachusetts General Hospital lab in the Charlestown Navy Yard.
The Boston Fire Department received a call at around 3 p.m. for a "possible chemical incident" in a 10-story building at 149 13th Street.
By about 3:30 p.m., two people were being taken from the scene to the hospitalÑone person who was injured in the original incident and one emergency responder who was injured at the scene. Both injuries appeared to be minor, according to Fire Department officials.
The incident apparently occurred in a sixth-floor lab, where a lab technician was working with the chemical tetrazine when it caused some glassware to shatter, according to Boston Fire Department reports. The lab technician is being treated for an injury caused by the shattering glass.
The second person, a firefighter, was injured outside the building while unloading equipment, according to reports.
Neither the lab technician nor the emergency responder's injuries are life-threatening, according to Boston Fire reports. The incident did not result in the release of any hazardous chemicals into the lab; however, a hazardous materials team is investigating further.

The Feb. 7 house fire that sent one Shelby Township resident to the hospital with second- and third-degree burns was accidental, fire department officials said Monday.
Investigators say it appears the resident was using a common household chemical too close to the water heater's open flame. The substance caught fire and the single-story home on Schimmel Avenue was quickly engulfed in flames.
The blaze took place around 9:15 p.m. Feb. 7.
Shelby firefighters rescued a male resident from the home and transported him to Beaumont Hospital in Troy. He was later transferred to the University of Michigan for further treatment.

Binghamton (WSYR-TV/NewsChannel34) - Binghamton Police say a man cooking meth caused a fire in an apartment building that displaced more than 40 people.
Police say Daniel Kauchis, 36, was cooking methamphetamine in his third-floor apartment when he triggered a small chemical explosion.
The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. on Main Street.
The building sustained heavy damage.

South Korean police said Tuesday they were investigating three Samsung managers for possible negligent homicide after a deadly toxic chemical leak at a chipmaking plant last month.
One repair worker died after trying to stop the leak of diluted hydrofluoric acid at the Samsung Electronics' plant in the city of Hwaseong, 43 kilometres (26 miles) southwest of central Seoul, on January 27.
Four other workers were treated in hospital but later released.
A post-mortem showed the worker had died of exposure to gas given off by the leak, which can damage lungs and bones and affect the nervous system.
Police said the leak was due to deterioration of rubber seals on the gas container valves and corroded bolts, and the three managers could face charges of negligent homicide.
"Investigations are still underway on how much gas was released É and its impact on the environment," the provincial police agency said in a statement.

Hazmat crews from Montgomery County Fire and Rescue were investigating after two canisters of unknown gas fell off of a loading dock in Silver Spring Monday afternoon, near Home Depot on Broadbirch Drive, a spokesperson for the department reports.
Evacuations were not ordered, although some people at nearby businesses and locations were advised to stay away from the containers, said Beth Anne Nesselt, public information officer for Fire and Rescue Services.
Crews were dispatched around 3:25 p.m., Feb. 25, to the 2300 block of Broadbirch Drive, near the intersection of Bournefield Way, as a result of the report of the containers of gas falling off of a loading dock.

A yellow, bubbly liquid on Highway 60 in Jurupa Valley prompted officials to shut down all westbound traffic for nearly 2 1/2 hours.
The trouble began at 2:05 p.m. Monday, Feb. 25, when a yellow, bubbly liquid was found in a box near La Rue Street, between Rubidoux Boulevard and Pacific Street. Traffic began flowing again at 4:35 p.m.
"All lanes are open, but we're working on the shoulder," Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said of the cleanup work. "They're going to put it in a non-corrosive barrel. It will be taken away and disposed of."
The type of acid and its source remain unknown because there was no label on the box, Kasinga said.
During most of the incident, the freeway was closed between Valley Way and the Riverside interchange.

HAZARDOUS SPILL ON I-49

An overturned 18 wheeler carrying hazardous materials resulted in an almost 10 mile stretch of 1-49 being closed for several hours.
The accident happened just before 8:00 AM, near the Dubuisson rest stop. The 18 wheeler was traveling north on 1-49, when for unknown reasons, it ran off on the right side of the roadway.
The cab remained upright, but the trailer turned on its side. The tanker was carrying methanol, a highly flammable liquid, and began leaking onto the roadway.
1-49 was closed in both directions for several hours, starting at mile marker 27 heading north and at mile marker 40 heading south hazmat responded, and began clean-up efforts no injuries were reported. The crash still remains under investigation.

Common synthetic chemicals suspected of disrupting the hormone system could be responsible for serious health problems, warns a report released on 19 February by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP). Nearly 800 chemicals are known or believed to interfere with hormone receptors, synthesis or conversion, according to the report's authors. But while the vast majority are currently on the market, only a small fraction have been investigated in tests capable of identifying overt endocrine effects, the report concluded. Specifically, the report highlighted associations between exposure to these endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) and non-descended testes in young males, breast cancer in women, prostate cancer in men, thyroid cancer, and developmental effects on the nervous system in children as well as attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

KIEV, Feb. 25 Ñ A major fire broke out Monday morning at a chemical storehouse in southern Ukraine, sending up heavy smoke over surrounding areas, authorities said.
The blaze that covered some 200 square meters, started at around 10:37 a.m. local time (GMT 0837) at the facility which stores paint products and solvents in Zaporozhe city, the State Service for Emergencies said.
Over 50 fire-fighters were able to extinguish the flames after an hour-long struggle and no causalities were reported, it said.

Five have been injured and 20,000 evacuated after a chemical plant in southwestern China blew up early Feb 25th, igniting a potentially toxic blaze that firefighters are continuing to battle.
The plant, which was owned by local chemical company Bestchem, continued to burn into the afternoon hours, wrote Xinhua, while local environmental authorities monitored air quality.
The cause of the blast remains unknown, wrote RT.com, although it's suspected that some materials linked, contributing to the explosion.
Pyrethroids, chemicals commonly used in insecticide and insect repellant, were the focus of the Bestchem plant.
