AURORA, Colo. - Aurora police allowed evacuated neighbors to return home Tuesday night after authorities removed several explosive devices and bomb-making materials from a house and shed.

The explosive devices and bomb-making materials were found by firefighters responding to a small fire in the basement of the home around 10:30 p.m. Monday.
The responding fire crew found fireworks, bomb-making materials and possible explosive devices so the Arapahoe County bomb squad was called in. Police said the bomb squad found pipe bombs in a shed behind the house.
Aurora police spokeswoman Sgt. Cassidee Carlson described the two pipe bombs as "pretty powerful devices" and said bomb techs had informed her they "could have possibly totally demolished the suspect's house and possibly damaged other houses."
"If his house would've went up, mine probably would've went up with it. And of course nobody wants that, so it's definitely scary," neighbor Donn Daniels said.

APACHE CORP. AVOIDS BLOWOUT IN WELL OFF VENICE; EVACUATES 15 WORKERS AS A PRECAUTION

A natural gas exploration well being drilled by the Apache Corp. in shallow Gulf waters about 50 miles east of Venice avoided a blowout on Feb. 5 by the successful operation of the well's blowout preventers, the company reported this week. The incident forced the evacuation of 15 non-essential workers from the 65-worker rig.
While a disaster was averted, natural gas from the well has migrated upwards to a second sand formation and company contractors are bringing in another drilling rig -- the Rowan Cecil Provine -- in case a relief well needs to be drilled, officials with Apache and the federal Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement said.

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - A fire triggered by a natural gas explosion engulfed a restaurant in Kansas City, Missouri, on Tuesday, injuring at least 16 people and leaving search teams to comb charred debris for remains of anyone who may have perished, authorities said.
Although no known fatalities were immediately reported, Fire Chief Paul Berardi said several patrons were likely inside the restaurant when it went up in flames, and cadaver dogs were brought in to help sift through the ruins of the building overnight.
"We are concerned that there may be additional people that were not able to get out of the structure," Berardi told reporters, adding that the blaze erupted at happy hour. "I always fear there may be fatalities in a situation like this."

Detroit Ñ The fire department's hazardous materials team has cleaned up a liquid chlorine leak Monday morning at the city's wastewater treatment plant on Jefferson Avenue.
Fire officials say the leak was reported at 9:04 a.m. and was fixed by 9:30 a.m.
Plant workers were evacuated from the area as the fire department's HAZMAT team responded to the incident.
The leak was initially recognized by a worker who was changing out equipment Monday morning, according to Lt. Orlando Watkins.
The HAZMAT team is based at the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department facility, at 9300 W. Jefferson Ave., as a precaution.

All five fire companies put out a fire Monday evening at a facility that contained large vats of flammable industrial solvents, authorities said.

Clifton Adhesives manufactures special industrial adhesives and coatings.
John Gabriel, chief of Company 2, was first on the scene and found heavy smoke and flames coming from inside a mixing room that contained large vats filled with the flammable solvents, Toth said. Companies 3 and 4 were also dispatched to the scene.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) - A chlorine spill at Bermco Industrial Center Monday morning caused an evacuation.
According to Bob Hollabaugh, Vice President of Sales, a chlorine vendor was making its weekly delivery when a one ton cylinder fell, causing it to crack.
According to Birmingham Fire & Rescue Chief C.W. Mardis, 4 people were treated at the scene after inhaling the chemical.
Employees of Mingledorff's, a neighboring HVAC business brought out orders and purchases across the street to waiting customers.

In the chemistry labs of the developing world, it's not uncommon to find containers, forgotten on shelves, with only vague clues to their origins. The label, if there is one, is rubbed away.
Left alone for years, some chemicals can quietly break down into explosive elixirs, and what was once an innocent experiment by a well-meaning scientist becomes a very real, unsecured threat. Should such chemicals fall into malicious hands, the consequences could be widespread and deadly.
In 2007, Sandia chemical engineer Nancy Jackson helped the U.S. Department of State create the Chemical Security Engagement Program to help scientists around the world, particularly in developing countries, keep chemical use safe and secure. Jackson and her team develop and implement programs for laboratories worldwide to help manage their chemical inventories and devote time to training future laboratory trainers.
As the 2011 president of the American Chemical Society and manager of Sandia's International Chemical Threat Reduction program, Jackson has traveled and worked closely with scientists in some of the world's most volatile regions to make their laboratories more safe and secure. For her extensive work engaging scientists around the world, the American Association for the Advancement of Science has honored Jackson with the 2013 Science Diplomacy Award, which will be presented on Friday, Feb. 15, at the AAAS annual meeting in Boston.

HAZMAT CREWS CLEAN UP AFTER TANKER TRUCK CARRYING JET FUEL RUNS

Tyler Police, Tyler Fire and HAZMAT responded to the scene of a wreck involving a tanker truck that ran off the roadway on Commerce and Loop 323.
According to Tyler Fire PIO Paul Findley, about 700 gallons of jet fuel were released onto the ground, from the truck that can hold up to 7,500 gallons. There is some fuel out on the ground still, but it has been stopped from going further into the woods.
The environmental impact is unclear at this time. A third party is coming to clean up the fuel that did leak out of the tanker.
The truck was en route to Delek Refinery. Findley says there will be an investigation.
It is believed the wreck was caused by a distraction. The driver will be cited for failure to maintain a single lane. Part of the truck hit the guardrail initiating the leak.

MAJOR FIRE AT CHEMICAL UNITS IN ANKLESHWAR, JHAGADIA

ANKLESHWAR: Major fire broke out in two different chemical manufacturing units at Jhagadia and Ankleshwar industrial estates on Monday. No casualties have been reported, however, both plants have suffered heavy damage.
The first fire was reported from Yashashwi Rasayan Pvt Ltd, located on plot No.765 in Jhagadia industrial estate. The fire broke out during production of 2:4 Xylidine, an organic intermediate. A leak in a reactor resulted in the breaking of a bottom control valve, which caused an explosive fire in solvent lying nearby. Within an hour the flames had spread across the entire plant causing heavy damage. More than six fire-tenders from Ankleshwar and Jhagadia industries and Disaster Prevention and Management Centre (DPMC) Ankleshwar rushed to the spot. They could finally control the fire after three hours.
In the second incident, a major fire broke out at Vivek Chemicals, located at Ankleshwar GIDC estate in the afternoon on Monday. The unit distills pharmaceutical intermediates and recovers solvents. An explosion occurred around at 3.45 p.m on Monday and in a couple of minutes the entire distillation plant was in flames. The intensity of the blast was such that window glasses and roofs of sheds nearby were broken.

METH LAB EXPLOSION LEADS TO ARREST

Alliance Police Department arrested Marvin Adkins, 33, on charges related to an alleged meth lab explosion on Monday morning.
At approximately 8:30 a.m. Monday, police responded to a report of chemical smells, loud noises and breaking glass at 405 S. Union Ave., Apt. 2.
According to Detective Lt. John Jenkins, officers arrived on scene to find an empty apartment and an open door. Jenkins said there was a strong chemical odor, and several precursors used to manufacture methamphetamine were observed in plain sight. Officers noticed blood and glass from a broken door in the first-floor apartment.
A melted plastic bottle, which appeared to be an active shake-and-bake-style meth lab, was discovered outside of the back door. The shake and bake method uses empty plastic bottles to cook the chemicals. It is believed that a bottle exploded in Adkins' hand as he attempted to take it outside after it began sparking. Allegedly, Adkins sustained injuries from diving through a glass window of a door that he could not open.
