Montana authorities monitored downstream water supplies for contamination Tuesday after a truck crash spilled about 7,000 gallons of a chemical salt used to deice roads into a Yellowstone River tributary near the Wyoming border.
The estimated volume of magnesium chloride spilled was up 2,000 gallons from initial reports. The increase came as authorities gained a better grasp on the scope of the accident after crews pulled most of the wreckage from the Clarks Fork of the Yellowstone.
A semitrailer crashed into a bridge over the river Monday, sending two trailers into the river about 2 miles north of the Wyoming border. The river flows north, feeding into the Yellowstone about 45 miles from the spill site.
Carbon County emergency coordinator Darrel Krum said the spill appeared small enough that dilution with river water should minimize problems. Because of the season, irrigation dozens of irrigations ditches that feed off the river were closed, preventing pollution of agricultural areas.

10 INJURED IN HAZMAT INCIDENT AT VILLANOVA UNIVERSITY

VILLANOVA, Pa. - February 12, 2013 (WPVI) -- Ten people are being treated after they were exposed to chemicals on the campus of Villanova University.
It happened at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday on the third floor of the Mendel Science Center in Mendel Hall.
Radnor Police tell Action News a freshman chemistry class was conducting an experiment when one of the students had a bad reaction. They thought she was having an asthma attack.
The student went into the bathroom, where she started to experience a nosebleed and nausea. Eight others, including the professor, started experiencing similar symptoms.
The fire alarm was pulled and the entire building evacuated.

Sixty-five West Tennessee students became nauseous after they were exposed to carbon monoxide. The poisonous gas accidentally got into Jo Byrns High School in Robertson County, making sixth and seventh graders sick. Luckily, none of the students had to go to the hospital. Officials believe a gas-powered pump that's used to remove water from the school's basement is the source of the leak. The school does not have carbon monoxide detectors.

Feb. 12--A chemical reaction that created a cloud of chlorine gas in the basement of Gaskill Preparatory School forced the evacuation of students and staff Monday morning.
Falls fighters said they were called to the school around 9:27 a.m. and when they arrived on the scene they discovered that a school district maintenance worker had "accidentally poured a 1-gallon container of muriatic acid into approximately 20 gallons of liquid chlorine" located in a 50-gallon drum that feeds the chemicals into the school's swimming pool.
The combination of the acid and the chlorine created a "cloud of chlorine gas" that filled the school's basement. At that point, firefighters ordered the school evacuated.

Firefighters, police and a hazardous materials team responded today to Shawnee Mission East High School for a chemical spill.
Officials said triiodide had spilled inside a refrigerator in the Prairie Village school's chemistry lab storage area. The substance is mild, but unstable.
Because the spill was contained, crews decided to allow school to conclude before starting cleanup.
School officials stressed that at no time were students or faculty in danger.

EXPLOSIVE and deadly chemicals used to produce illicit drugs in clandestine laboratories are posing a significant danger to nearby residents, police warn.
Figures obtained by The Advertiser show 76 drug labs were uncovered across the state in the past 18 months - with the majority in the suburbs.
Police are advising residents to be vigilant about the presence of the labs in their community, after explosions in South Australia and interstate.

HAZMAT CREWS RESPOND TO STRONG ODOR

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) - HAZMAT crews were called to the Southeastern Public Service Authority's Norfolk transfer station after a strong odor was reported.
Capt. Mike Hicks with Norfolk Fire Rescue said crews were dispatched to the 3100 block of Woodland Avenue after the strong odor was making people gag and irritating eyes. When crews went in to perform air quality tests, a flammable gas found was believed to be methane gas from decomposing trash.
Hicks said the cause was believed to be common household chemicals mixing together.
SPSA is going to remove the last batch of trash that is thought to be causing the smell and drop it into the next truck.
Hicks said the Department of Environmental Quality has been contacted. The group will determine where the trash should be moved.

Crews with the Santa Barbara County Fire Department responded to a gas leak at the Goleta Costco just before 4 p.m. Monday.
Firefighters say R22, a flammable gas, was leaking from a refrigeration unit. Employees were evacuated and one was assessed by emergency crews at the scene and released.
Fire crews had the building ventilated by 6:20 p.m. and said employees would be returning soon.

More details emerge on UC Davis explosives case
At a bail hearing on Friday for University of California, Davis, chemist David Snyder, more details emerged about the case against him for alleged possession and intent to make destructive devices, reckless disposal of hazardous waste, and possession of firearms on campus. Snyder was injured in an explosion in his campus apartment on Jan. 17.

ACID LEAK SENDS PAIR OF MAINTENANCE WORKERS FROM GLOBALFOUNDRIES TO HOSPITAL

MALTA Ñ Two GlobalFoundries workers were hospitalized late Wednesday night after being exposed to leaking hydrofluoric acid at the chip fab plant.
The employees, who experienced burning sensations to their eyes and noses, and went to Saratoga Hospital for evaluation and observation at about 11:30 p.m., were held overnight and released Thursday morning.
"It was not serious," company spokesman Travis Bullard said.
Diluted hydrofluoric acid solutions are used to etch circuit pathways in silicon wafers as part of the semiconductor chip manufacturing process. Bullard said a pinhole leak developed on a hydrofluoric acid line inside a chemical cabinet in the plant's sub-fab.
The sub-fab, located on the ground level, is where the utilities feed up to the second-floor clean room, where manufacturing takes place.
"Most of the liquid was contained within the cabinet, but some material leaked onto the sub-fab floor," Bullard said. "Two maintenance technicians were called to investigate and during this process they experienced some irritation in their eyes and noses. Neither of the individuals was injured. As a precaution, a large area in the sub-fab was barricaded and decontamination of the outside of the tool and within the chemical cabinet occurred throughout the day (Thursday)."
